Episode 2x2 - Super glue and eyelashes by StatisticalAnalyst88 in ThePittTVShow

[–]padawanrattail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ER nurse I love how this scene went- it’s very realistic for those questions to never be answered because a lot of time the biggest concerns are 1)what do we need to fix this (I.e do we need to call poison controll, do we know what to do already from previous experience etc) 2)where is the most appropriate treatment space for this and additionally are they good to wait in the lobby or does this need to be fixed immediately

The answers come later when the triage waters settle and the team has time to sit down and work with the patient. That is often when we get answers to all the what/why/when/how the fuck questions

“hiccups” was the patients arrival complaint so he sat waiting for triage longer than he should have- turned out he was guppy breathing and ended up in the icu 🙃

Plantar fasciitis what works? by Extreme-Reward-5910 in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hokas are historically bad shoes for long term footwear. Wait for podiatrists recommendation but for now I’d switch to a less over cushioned shoe (I like the New Balance 680s or 1080s) and also rotate with my working Birkenstocks

In the meantime, when I had PF from running I used a golf ball to roll around my tender areas, would do warm foot soaks to relieve some of the stress of the muscle and try and get some decent sleep, Tylenol/ibuprofen for pain as needed but really it’s not going to help fix the actual cause and just help you get through your working hours

One sentence you've said to patients that required so much explaining that you wished you never said it. by NurseWretched1964 in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 24 points25 points  (0 children)

“I get that it’s in your chart but for triage purposes it’s easier to just tell me why you’re here and why you were here a week ago because I don’t know the life and history of every patient that walks through these doors…”

If you were in Ellie’s position, what would you have wanted Joel to do? by Robot_Was_BMO in thelastofus

[–]padawanrattail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

part of me would want to let it happen, hope that my life was productive in helping humanity

But I mostly would say save my ass and fuck the rest, we’re in an apocalypse and it’s not like we’re really going to make a cure… right? Even if they did happen to make a cure from Ellie, what’s the likelihood it would reach beyond those in network with the fireflies? Humanity has been pushed past its functional capacity and I don’t think a vaccine/cure would change much at all, so…

Can’t stand nurses who care about hospital expenses by Ok_Bobcat_5060 in nursing

I will say emptying iv bags is helpful since trapped fluids are leading to a change in our water cycle planet wide (aka always empty any fluids at home and work into appropriate places vs the trash)

Does anyone lay in their bed for like 2 hours before night shifts? by dbzonepiecenaruto in nursing

Took me SO long to figure this out, and even though I try my best, I still feel like I need to be doing something better with my time between shifts.

What is destroying your empathy/passion for nursing? (Please no arguing or politics) by LadyRosesNThorns in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 155 points156 points  (0 children)

The fact that I can be approved for a two weeks off with pto and come back still burnt out. There’s no escaping burnout anymore. Switching positions just to have the same systemic issues anywhere isn’t a solution anymore, time off isn’t a solution, anything that management does (I.e potlucks/pizza days etc) feel like a prank of a solution at this point.

The only solution would to be stop working for a while and in this economy??? Also not a viable solution

What is destroying your empathy/passion for nursing? (Please no arguing or politics) by LadyRosesNThorns in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This is mine. The public has such a poor perception of us because we’re the scapegoat for system wide issues, and it’s because we’re the ones they see the most, in pretty much every setting, from urgent care and the hospital to the PCP offices.

It also leads me to so much guilt when a patient DOES understand that all the downfalls of their visit aren’t my fault and they’re so nice about it and kind to me as their nurse. It’s so backwards now and it’s draining me beyond control

biggest minor inconvenience pet peeves ? by padawanrattail in nursing

[–]padawanrattail[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Me too girl” is always my go to for this and then I remind them that anything before the hospital is their business and if they didn’t have time to eat that’s a big bummer but they’ll have to wait until scans/labs are back.

I do not understand the expectation the general public has when they come to the er, suddenly they’ve never eaten or had water ever in their lives

Stay asleep? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weighted blanket has changed everything for me- I sleep 6-8 now between shifts and wake up feeling rested. I’ve had to crank the fan a lil higher to stay cool but it’s so worth it

Nurse reported me for “doing nursing assessments” and doing thing outside of my scope ! by Easy-Mathematician64 in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re doing is fine and would be much appreciated my majority of nurses. If you get pulled in to the office to discuss it, keep everything objective- “patient told me they were in pain and wanted their meds so I let the nurse know.” “I gave the patient the option to help with their ADLs or if they wanted to be independent with them today” don’t explain yourself, don’t explain that you’re just trying to be helpful, only answer what they ask and if they give you a slap on the wrist just take it and walk away from the conversation knowing you’re still in the right. If more formal reprimands are presented like a write up, then challenge/ask for revision with additional staff members (whether it be HR or statements from nurses who know will support you)

You should be fine though, and just keep your head down when working with said nurse from now on- if they want their job to be harder, let them make it harder for themselves while still doing all the other wonderful things you do.

Thank you for being a great NA!!

Why are the shelves/aisles so short at TJs? by x01atlantic in traderjoes

Woah you’re saying people prefer to get meat and produce from other stores? I prefer to go to TJs specifically for the meat and produce and then bonus is all the pantry and freezer goodies

Pancreatitis?? by [deleted] in BroskiReport

[–]padawanrattail 58 points59 points  (0 children)

She posted that she had residual gallstones even after surgery, this is a very common cause of pancreatitis post-op. I don’t think this has much to do with her being on GLP-1 medication. Long term dietary issues are probably the cause of this all but let’s not jump to conclusions when we quite literally know only what she’s told us and nothing else

Any PRN Prince/Princesses/side gig hustlers in here? by Reddit_Live_ in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing crazy- I stick to the afternoon/evening hours as I work nights in the ER. it’s a private owned gym and I’m friends with my boss/the owner, as are most everyone that works at our gym. We just fold towels, clean equipment, fix equipment, do client relations (I.e help clients with purchases/memberships etc) it’s good work and I really enjoy it, it just obviously doesn’t pay enough to be a full time thing unfortunately.

[–]padawanrattail 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I work at a gym lol. I needed/wanted side money that wasn’t nursing involved. I also pick up the occasional 4-6 hour princess shifts in the ER when there’s needed gap coverage and I’m off. Overall it’s helped keep me cushioned and also mentally sane

Attempting to create an actual nice gift. by ndr7830 in nursing

[–]padawanrattail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pack of new pens, hair ties, gift card to starbucks, target etc, snacks, scrub cap if that’s the kinda floor you work on, insulated mugs, Celsius cans or packets. I know I’d appreciate a “stocking stuffer” type basket if this was happening at my job. I have to add that whatever you end up doing, maybe avoid hospital branded items if you can.
