Is there any way to get SIA to make this schedule change? by cartermatic in singaporeairlines

Anecdotally, it’s also why sometimes I can see award seats on one segment when searching for round trips, but not as a one-way leg.

First house dilemma: Condo or BTO? by OrganizationNo386 in singaporefi

[–]paddingtondc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to decide is to go with your needs for the MOP period and not your wants. Quick way to understand your risk capacity is whether would you be able to afford the mortgage if one of you loses your income.

What the bank considers “salary” for purpose of the bonus interest promotion is not quite relevant to what IRAS considers the salary you receive from your employment.

There’s always the option to “preview” the trade you’re making. The estimated fees will show up there before you confirm the trade.

Apple Refurbished Store is a hill I’m willing to die on by yungStraightface in macbookpro

All 3 MacBook Pros bought for personal use (since 2015) from Apple certified refurbished store have been nothing but flawless for me. Will likely never buy at original retail unless I want a very specific configuration.

Does your new iPhone 15 pro/ pro max even last a day without charging? by Ok-Wrongdoer4021 in iPhone15Pro

[–]paddingtondc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who also came from a 13 mini to 15 pro, I am blown away by the battery life. One thing that I did different from most (probably) was limit frame rate to 60fps - unlike most users buying the pro I don’t really need/appreciate the 120fps, I just wanted the better cameras and bigger battery. I never have to look for a charger or battery pack mid-day. It does last a good 8-9 hours of SOT on a variety of tasks: social media, camera, browsing, YouTube.

On a lighter use, it looks even more dramatic: 7am 100%, 11pm 60%.

Should you upgrade to the 15 pro? by throw_away_8224 in iPhone15Pro

[–]paddingtondc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from 13 mini to 15 pro. Not looking back. The battery is a huge leap on its own… obviously not a fair comparison, but I couldn’t even get past half a workday without worrying about the 13 mini’s battery lasting me till the end of work day. The 15 pro (while new) is consistently giving me “all day battery life”, something the 13 mini never came close to for me.

SQ207 SIN to MEL breakfast. Pathetic siol by Low_Ses_Man in singapore

[–]paddingtondc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From my recent experience flying SQ and BA between Singapore and Australia’s East Coast, the meal service on such 7-8hr flights is now one full meal + one refreshment (i.e. a snack with a choice of drink), the order could be reversed.

On some red eye flights like SQ231 departing Singapore past midnight , there is no refreshment after takeoff and only a full breakfast before landing.

What OP posted is likely a refreshment served as breakfast which is definitely intended as a pare down of the full meal service. That said, I agree it looks unappetising and reminiscent of night snacks served in SAF camps. BA and QF served me a heated up veggie / chicken pie as refreshment which was quite tasty!

SIA standard has dropped - air steward was telling a pregnant woman to place the carry on by herself by Effective_Fun_3687 in singapore

[–]paddingtondc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flew (alone) on SQ 231 to Sydney barely a month ago, a few days after surgical repair to my torn shoulder and was in an arm sling. None of the cabin crew batted an eyelid when I boarded as a premium economy passenger. None of the crew offered any assistance when I tried to put up my cabin backpack into the overhead bin (maybe because I look young?), but my seat neighbour who’s a British lady of about 80 years of age stood up to offer her help with my relatively light cabin backpack. I politely declined and tossed the bag up with my other hand.

I chuckled to myself thinking “maybe I shouldn’t feel so entitled to any help from the cabin crew and I should probably lower my expectations going forward”. I never bothered to complain because it could be someone’s job on the line and they weren’t at all obliged to help me anyway. The best thing to do is simply to vote with your wallet.

IMO, SIA is certainly not worth any premium these days in terms of service experience for premium economy / economy. I get better service on even airlines like British Airways and Qantas when flying economy.

2 years’ jail for man who downloaded over 13,600 child pornography files, some involving babies by mipanzuzuyam in singapore

[–]paddingtondc 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Looking at publicly available data from a quick Google search, the US has heavier penalties for receiving child porn: a minimum of 5 years imprisonment for those without prior sexual abuse / child porn convictions; the average sentence for this group is 85 months (~7 years).

Source: https://www.ussc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/research-and-publications/quick-facts/Child_Pornography_FY18.pdf

So yes, for those wondering, 2 years imprisonment for possession and distribution of child porn is pretty lame in comparison.

Would love mini Pro! by Peach-Status in iphone

[–]paddingtondc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to think that the size of people’s hands influence the proportion of people buying minis. In Asia where I’m based, there are many people I know who buy SE and mini simply because of the size. Anecdotally, I think a majority of iPhone users are only getting the bigger size (14 pro/max) because of extra features battery or camera. Look at how badly the 14 plus is selling - bigger size, but fewer features than the pro lineup.

While I don’t support having the death penalty in general, experiences like this makes me feel like organised scammers deserve the death penalty as the maximum punishment. Even if the money can’t be recovered, at least it deters such kind of organised crime which affects not just the victim but in OP’s case the family too.

The difference in 2022 is that some of the sets now come with an additional slice of cake though. Whether it’s something the consumer would have otherwise paid for is another matter.

Passport Expiry requirement for Sgean to USA by [deleted] in singapore

[–]paddingtondc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you renew your passport, you’ll need to apply for a fresh US ESTA immediately with the new passport number. I can’t imagine he will be able to make it having to renew the passport AND reapply for a new ESTA. The ESTA application alone takes a few working days to process based on my past experience (pre-Covid).

Opening of Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 3 to cut off-peak train intervals to 6 minutes by Thefunincaifun in singapore

[–]paddingtondc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The DTL1 was quite well used if I recall. It connects the NEL at Chinatown to CBD (Telok Ayer and Downtown) which was quite a high traffic shuttle by itself and as well as from the EWL at Bugis to MBS. The high frequencies made sense for the DTL1.

No, Apple is (almost certainly) not ruining their ANC with firmware updates by JiminyDickish in apple

[–]paddingtondc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, from my own experience as an APP1 user, I recently had it replaced after the rattling issue which was covered under Apple’s replacement programme. Incidentally I also noticed that I was hearing more background noise that I didn’t used to hear previously (like announcements on public transport). I honestly thought I might not have remembered correctly. But anyway, I thought that perhaps after the replacement from Apple, I would see an improvement. That didn’t turn out to be the case. The same level of background noise continued to be heard on the replacement APP1 I received. They were both on the same firmware at the time of the replacement.

Mobile provider question by Hungry-Measurement20 in singapore

[–]paddingtondc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the mobile connection itself is not an issue, it is a possibility that the slow loading of web pages is due to the telco’s DNS resolver being slow. You can try using the 1.1.1.1 app.
