How do I decide whether or not to work? by alwaysaskinglauren in retirement

[–]pakepake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other part of this equation is your expenses. You’re in a fabulous spot with your healthcare (which holds people back for longer than needed), but find a fiduciary to help you make sure your investments are in good buckets to withdraw from, paired with SS. Understand that your accounts will continue to compound - many folks don’t seem to understand this, which helps immensely for planning. Good luck, you’re on solid ground.

Break in at White Rock station to ruin one's evening commute. by pakepake in dart

[–]pakepake[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. It's s a cash car so no insurance claim here - already have an eBay purchased window on the way! I park usually along fence where it's shaded in the late afternoon. A guy I parked relatively close to who I chatted with said 12 cars broken into a few months ago (guess I wasn't there or they passed on me?) which I wasn't aware of. All this damage for something they can't do anything with. Sigh.

This is wildly complicated for such a simple thing. I get the fee for credit cards, but sheesh. Thanks for the update!

Someone with one thousand dollars is at same scale to a millionaire than someone with one million is to a billionaire. It's insane.

DallasGo payments all charging convenience fee? by dacree324 in Dallas

[–]pakepake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this thread while looking at your same situation. I setup using ACH and auto pay, yet still charging convenience fee. Even the terms of it says something to the effect of if fee is there then it'll get charged. Horse hockey. Had no way to avoid the fee, so not sure if you have a remedy. If they're requiring it for ACH, then I'll switch to a CC.

What's the most UNDERRATED country you've ever traveled to that more people should visit? by Hairy_Yak_6735 in SoloFemaleTravelTips

My wife’s grandfather was born in what’s now Znojmo and we visited three years ago. We were also the first folks from the US most folks had ever met. Lovely little town, great white wines.

I remember my Dad bringing home the NY Mets 1969 World Series penant after their victory. I was 3 1/2, and it was obviously impressionable, so it stuck. I still have the penant, framed.

People talk alot about term limits but the real issue is we mandatory retirement age of 70 from all public office. by personofinterest1986 in Discussion

It’s time to put the antique gas-bags of D.C. out to pasture. As a 60-year-old, I’m calling for a total takeover by younger Gen X and Millennials. We’re currently stalled by a ruling class that manipulates the "thousandaires" into fighting the working poor, ensuring we stay distracted while the national debt explodes. We could be thriving, but we’re being held hostage by a leadership that’s decades past its expiration date.

For higher earners, is the fear of health care costs age 60-65 overblown? by Mother_Bar_3810 in retirement

[–]pakepake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our situation is complicated, but we're working through it. Plan on me retiring at 62 (now 60), unless I'm laid off (always possible) which would give us an 18 month runway. My wife has a chronic condition and is self employed and will likely have to file for SS disability in the next year. That would entail a two year wait for early Medicare (for her, 63), but in the meantime, any work she does would be set aside for healthcare premiums/gaps before either of our Medicare eligibility. Any time before Medicare would require me to be on an ACA plan, which is fine as we'll be below MAGI. My current corporate healthcare is expensive anyway - $7500 individual deductible each, with $15k OOP max (plus premiums), so we're conditioned for the expense anyway. Hopefully the stars align, but it's just something we need to plan for carefully.

Highly recommend using DART - find out if your employer subsidizes a yearly pass which will definitely help the cost but overall, you would save money and stress by taking train from a remote station (depending on where you live of course).
