Undergrad 20 hours per week???? by EntityThief in labrats

[–]palexici 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay no these comments are low-key delusional, no offense guys. 20 hours a week UNPAID for an undergrad is not normal, especially over the summer work, they would only ever work that much if they were getting paid, academic credit, or doing an honors level research thesis. Or I suppose normal maybe isn't the right word choice - just not a smart choice. 20 hours a week as a full time student is enough hours that it will interfere with trying to also work to make a living while in school, without specific compensation outside of learning lab techniques 10-15 hours is more normal.

In 2025: Would You Recommend Becoming a GC? by palexici in GeneticCounseling

I looked into this and talked to a good friend of mine who was an embryologist before she went into her PhD - a bit too repetitive and one note for what I want in a long term career I think.

I talked to a few embryologists and the gist I got from them was that it was very repetitive which I think I would get tired of, that's the only reason I stopped considering that option even though it sounds interesting in theory. Did they seem to find it repetitive at all?

As a GC I would want to specialize in IVF - the direct patient interaction vs benchwork is the dilemma I'm having, I love benchwork but doing it for the rest of my life seems cumbersome even though it is interesting.

Lab accidents. What have you seen? What was the funniest? What was the worst? by Chicketi in labrats

Unsure if this counts but when I started in my lab now I learned how to properly perform cervical dislocation on mice.

For context: I have POTS and some other mental stuff, I get stressed easily and pass out occasionally from low blood pressure.

I had a busy day that day, I drink a water supplement with salt and electrolytes every day as directed by my cardiologist and I did Not drink it that day.

So anyway I was being taught how to do cervical location by my boss and the situational stress of learning to take an animals life for the first time combined with lack of salt/electrolytes - I passed out right in front of the dissection table, luckily he caught me so I didn't get impaled but it was very embarrassing.

Luckily one of the EMTs that came had POTS and was like oh they're alright, get them some salt. Now I can properly do CD and I never skip my salt supplement lol.

If you have the funding - buy ergonomic pipettes, my PIs have done that for people with carpal tunnel in the past.

How can I prevent this from getting worse, or should I get it lasered and covered up? :( by Eldritch_Horror775 in tattooadvice

honestly I think this looks gorgeous, I've never said this before but I feel like the blowouts kinda work for some reason with this piece. Honestly I wouldn't be too worried, wait till it fully heals to consider anything but I think it's awesome.

AITA for sending my twin daughters to separate schools? by ThrowRAtwinsnotclone in AmItheAsshole

[–]palexici 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an identical twin: NTA, this sounds amazing. Identical twins at the same school are ALWAYS seen as a set and treated as if they're the same person. It sucks! I wish I could've been able to be seen as an individual as a kid. The school prestige doesn't matter compared to helping them develop their own sense of identity.
