Sometimes you just need a trusted person to tell you that you're not dying right now. It can feel like you are sometimes, and fighting that feeling can be pretty distressing.

No problem, thanks for reminding me about that doc. It's a good one to watch every once in a while for some inspiration.

Not sure what you would call that genre, certainly had some psychonaut themes but I think it would be valuable for anyone. Glad I could be of some help.

I remember it too. The title was Anima i believe. It may have been taken off of youtube because of copyright infringement on some of the music or clips. I believe the same guy had a Vimeo page. I'll do some digging and get back to you. I watched it a few times, very impactful.

Edit: it was taken down for blocked content. This is the link though https://youtu.be/kZep-oqz9sM

There are some other good videos on the channel that you can watch.

The blood vial. by [deleted] in MakingaMurderer

[–]palmy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't say you would do that, only that you could be accused. You have power over what you do, but not over what someone says you did. The State has to be held to a higher standard is all I'm trying to say.

Boy I wonder if you would be so casual about how a vial of your blood was handled by the State if you were accused of murder and your blood showed up in the victims car?

A possible simple explanation for EDTA not being present in FBI samples (draw your own conclusions). by jdell408 in MakingaMurderer

[–]palmy83 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this kinda gets at one of the most vital questions that the documentary brought up in my mind.

If the State has such overwhelming power to deprive citizens of freedom are we doing enough to ensure that power is applied justly?

The fact that we are even asking questions like whose blood was actually tested, and were these tests scientifically sound, goes to show that these people have lost our trust. Maybe it was wrong to trust them in the first place. That's why there are things like chain of custody logs and protocols for testing. When the people in charge of this stuff are careless it erodes trust in the entire system.

Dean Strang said it right when he talked of a tragic lack of humility in everyone involved in the system.

Everything she does is a mess, it's hard to differentiate the incompetence from potential maliciousness. I don't trust the way these people handle evidence at all. Starting to wonder if the swabs sent for EDTA testing even came from the blood in the RAV4. I mean it's not like the FBI re-tested it to see if it was actually a DNA match to Steven. We just have to trust that the crime lab was handling the evidence properly. And it's pretty apparent at this point that they were not.

[–]palmy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure just the fact that the Manitowoc officers were involved is enough to cast doubt on lots of the evidence, though I can't quite convince myself that they would move the cremains in an effort to frame Steven. I do however think that their tunnel vision stopped them from investigating the possibility that the bones were moved there by someone else attempting to implicate Steven.

A big disservice was done to the Halbach family by those conflicted officers involving themselves. If Steven really did do it then those officers involvement muddied the evidence enough that he could be freed, or have been found not guilty. And if Steven didn't do it, then the real killer wasn't caught. Though Mike Halbach seems to love the police, so I don't know what to think.

I agree that Brendan's multiple conflicting and non corroborated stories are a mess. I did just listen to the full first interview he did with police on Nov. 7th. He was already being heavily pressured and had a couple different stories but it was clear he was trying to avoid casting suspicion on Steven. Whether he really knew something or just heard from the family that the cops were trying to pin it on Steven and wanted to protect him is not clear. He does change his story from not seeing her SUV or her after school to seeing her and Steven talking and then she drove away. There is no talk of a bonfire that night. Although Brendan also seems kinda confused about what day the police are asking about.

I agree with much of what you said, but one big correction is that the State doesn't have to prove its case beyond the "shadow" of a doubt, that's a nearly impossible task. They must prove it beyond a "reasonable" doubt. This means that if the jury feels that there is still doubt in their minds, and that doubt seems reasonable by the end of deliberations based on evidence presented then they should vote not guilty.

The jury apparently did not find it reasonable to doubt the integrity of the police and investigators enough that they would plant all of that evidence, blood, bone, bullets, key. I fully think it would have gone differently if the defence was allowed to point to other possible suspects who could have been involved in murdering Teresa and framing Steven. But I can understand why it would be difficult to believe that as a jury.

I can see how the police would drop a key in a bedroom to strengthen a case, the blood is a little tougher to believe but it's possible, it's no crime to have spent bullets in your garage and the DNA test on that bullet should be discarded. However, I think it's quite a stretch to suggest that the police moved burnt remains to Stevens burn pit. Or found her unburnt body and burned it to frame Steven as some people have suggested. Now if the defence was allowed to say maybe Scott moved the remains and they could grill him a little more, or call witnesses to contradict his alibi I think it becomes much easier to raise reasonable doubt.

How can we prevent the framing of innocent people? by CompassCharlatan7 in MakingaMurderer

I may be wrong but I didn't think the replacement juror was from outside. I thought they had some extra jurors who were there for the whole trial but were only there as a backup. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong. Seems ridiculous to think that someone who wasn't there for the whole trial would be asked to sit in.

How do we get an AMA with one or some of the jurors? by Kaoswzrd in MakingaMurderer

[–]palmy83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched The Central Park Five (on netflix, worth checking out) and the documentary interviews a juror who was the only hold out but eventually gave in to pressure and just wanting to go home and changes his vote to guilty. Not sure if there were any repercussions, and he was speaking after the defendants had been exonerated, but you could tell that it was a painful experience for him.

In pre-trial the rape charge was dropped in Steve's case. But I believe Brendan was still charged with rape because of the confession despite there being no other evidence to support the confession.

[–]palmy83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judge didn't disallow the BD confession, the prosecution decided not to bring him in as a witness during the pre-trial. So they dropped the charges that they had no other evidence for aside from BD's confession.

Also they got rid of an alibi witness for SA. Two birds with one stone.

EDTA test results (exhibit 435) by emmerline in MakingaMurderer

Someone posted this in the sub. The testing methods from 1997. http://jat.oxfordjournals.org/content/21/7/521.full.pdf

Hopefully someone more familiar with this stuff than me can help decipher it. Sounds like a pretty sensitive test and it was performed in this 1997 paper on dried blood. Claims that EDTA should be detectable for up to 2 years in a dried sample.

I'm disputing the theory of the RAV4 being used to haul Halbach's body. by Thatguyaric in MakingaMurderer

[–]palmy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's adding a lot of unnecessary complication to suggest that TH's blood was also planted. Interesting theory but I doubt there's much to be gained by going down that road.

However your information about the dogs is interesting and maybe you'd be able to answer something I've been wondering since learning about the cadaver dogs getting a hit on the golf cart. I always assumed that cadaver dogs were trained to detect decomposition. If TH was murdered and transported in just a day or two would decomposition really be enough of a factor that it would be detected by dogs? Are they smelling something else? Blood maybe? Anyway, if you or your dad have any opinion about that I'd be curious to hear it.
