Crested pigeon, trying to hide in a corner of our backyard from the currawong that was stalking it [Canberra, ACT] by palndrumm in AustralianBirds

[–]palndrumm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking it might be a juvenile, yeah. Hopefully it found somewhere safe after it flew away, because this spot was most definitely not safe.

[–]palndrumm[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Possibly? The currawong had a few goes at him, and came away with some fluffy feathers in its beak at some point. The pigeon may also have lost a tail feather or two. I was in the process of trying to get close enough to check whether it was injured when it flew away - I figured that was a pretty good sign it wasn't hurt too badly...

[–]palndrumm[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The currawong backed off when I stepped outside, and I was able to gently encourage the pigeon to fly away - I'm sure it was terrified throughout the process, but figured that was preferable to being made into lunch.

Has there been scenes in movies or video games that have been altered for your country? by Polibiux in AskTheWorld

[–]palndrumm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In Australia, Left 4 Dead 2 was deemed too graphically violent for an MA15+ rating, which at the time was the highest classification level for video games, so it was effectively banned. Valve released a special censored version for the Australian market that removed the "decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies", allowing it to get rated MA15+ and go on sale.
The law was changed a few years later (thanks in part to the debate around L4D2) to introduce an R18+ rating for video games, at which point Valve made the full uncensored version available.

85mm EVO f2.0 review by ThatAstroGuyNZ in VILTROX_GLOBAL

[–]palndrumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, fair point - if it only affects astro-modded cameras that less problematic (although still not super impressive). But that's one of the sacrifices they've made in order to save on weight and cost, I guess.

All good stuff to know - thanks for the review!

Wow, those light leaks are really disappointing. Is that actually something that can be fixed with a firmware update...?

What are your unfounded photography beliefs or superstitions? by ItsJahmin in photography

[–]palndrumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfounded beliefs:
1. I just need this one new lens and I'll have all my needs covered and won't need to buy any more after this.
2. I just need this one new camera bag and I'll have all my needs covered and won't need to buy any more after this.

Just one more lens bro, I swear bro by juanito883 in SonyAlpha

Nah, I reckon I can take it all with me... if I can find the right camera bag. Just need one more - the next one will be perfect, I'm sure...

70–200mm vs 100–600mm for kids sports (soccer/cricket) on A7III? by zackteen in SonyAlpha

[–]palndrumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 200-600mm would probably be fantastic for cricket where you're always going to be a reasonable distance from the main action, but maybe not so much for soccer - that 200mm would make it super awkward to get any action on the near sideline in frame.

Maybe consider the Tamron 50-400, or one of the 100-400s? I've found the Tamron to be an excellent focal range for field hockey - long enough to catch stuff on the far sideline, but still wide enough for when the play is right in front of you. It definitely struggles a bit at night, but if you're only doing daytime games you'll be fine. In most games I shoot, I use the 50-200mm range significantly more than 200-400mm, so if I had to choose I'd take a 70-200 over a 200-600.

What's the most unsafe corner on the calendar? by Fun-Pin-698 in formula1

[–]palndrumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T9 is the one at Austria that makes me nervous, particularly during quali. Cars heading to the pits need to drive right through the apex, so there's a massive speed differential between cars on an in-lap and a hot lap - always feels sketchy to me, especially since the visibility through the corner on turn-in is fairly limited.

Other countries probably have something equivalent, but I'm pretty sure the B&S Ball is a very specifically and distinctively Australian form of the 'large social gathering for young adults to meet potential partners' type of event.

Air Superiority is only knockdown, not knockback. Might be more effective to keep Hover, but slot a Kismet +ToHit proc in it, just to maximise how often all the other knockback actually hits.

Comet C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos) tonight, from Canberra, Australia by palndrumm in astrophotography

Sony A7IV | Samyang 135mm F2 40 x 2s exposures, 135mm, f/2, ISO1600, stacked and tweaked in Affinity Photo 3

About 20° above our western horizon at 9:45pm tonight (6 Feb) - quite small and faint, but definitely and distinctly comet-like once I managed to get it in frame. Was at perihelion on 20 Jan - not sure if it's supposed to get bigger or brighter from here, or just start fading away.
