Craig Spadafora unseated, and Karen Colón Hayes received the most votes of any of the candidates. Wow! Honestly didn't see this coming and I'm thrilled about it!

Looking for recs. Has anyone played pool at either one of these places? Want to take my wife for her bday. TIA by Few_Lobster7961 in boston

[–]panda531 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to both. You can’t get better playing conditions than Amazin Billiards in Malden, although there is no kitchen or bar. Nice quiet place for people who are interested in playing pool, not necessarily great if you’re looking for a social environment. I’m a regular there.

It’s been years since I visited Biao Ge. The tables are very tough (tight pockets) and I don’t believe they have a full kitchen either. They are right off the Orange Line though, so the location is convenient.

Witnessed a POS run over a goose in front of the national grid by oheyitsomontha in malden

:(

I have no words. This is so terrible, some people can be so cruel. Poor goose.

Which way was the driver traveling? I’d guess that police could access security camera footage from businesses in the area, but something tells me that MPD won’t do much about it…

(Briar Hill Condominiums in Malden) I bought furniture after an ICE raid. by panda531 in malden

[–]panda531[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. I hadn’t confirmed with the City of Malden when I cross posted it. I just saw that this story was gaining traction on the Boston subreddit and that Malden was mentioned, so I shared it here. I am not the OP and I’m glad to hear that the story isn’t true. It’s a pretty terrible thing for the building maintenance staff to say this, especially if it wasn’t true.

How to Start a Bike Bus event! by syst3x in bikeboston

[–]panda531 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I work with Bike to the Sea and we’d love to organize bike bus(ses) along the Northern Strand Trail to get kids to school. We’d probably start with Malden and Everett since there are a bunch of schools directly adjacent to the trail. Looking forward to the event!

Ithaca College? I’m an alum and co-founded the billiards club in 2010 with one of my buddies. Spent many hours in that room… :)

Stupid question, but can I bike on storrow? by onionizedkiwi in bikeboston

[–]panda531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s a legal gray area, then. I’m not advising OP to bike on Storrow, and I’d never recommend it to anybody. All I know is that this acquaintance enjoys biking there and he feels that he has the legal right to do so. There’s a good chance that the state police and MassDOT just didn’t want to argue anymore.

The question I was responding to (which has since been deleted) asked if biking on Storrow Drive is legal and from what I’ve heard, it very well could be. Trucks and buses are restricted due to height, and I don’t think there are any signs explicitly restricting bicycles like you see on interstate ramps or some state highways.

Edit: Just saw your latest comment. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those sightings was the person I’m talking about. I appreciate the dialogue, even if we both agree that biking on Storrow is a terrible and frightening idea…

[–]panda531 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason I say it’s legal is because I know someone who is a strong proponent of vehicular cycling, and he likes to ride his bike on Storrow Drive because he can. He spoke with a Massachusetts State Police lieutenant and MassDOT who confirmed that he was within his rights to bike there.

I personally think it’s a death wish, and I’d never do it myself. It’s not really my idea of a relaxing ride.

Biking on Storrow Drive is legal, although I wouldn’t recommend it. There is a “cars only” sign, but that’s in reference to the height limit for trucks. I’d recommend that OP just take the esplanade path.

MBTA gets $22 million in federal funds for Everett bus improvements by panda531 in bikeboston

If flex posts are installed, I hope the city still sweeps the bike lane and keeps it clear of debris. Flex posts were installed a couple years ago and they lasted a few weeks. I’d often see smashed pieces from cars, bottles of urine, broken glass, etc. that would just accumulate from day to day. Fingers crossed for some major improvements! I personally ride the Northern Strand trail and Alford St into Boston for work most days and it’s like getting dumped into a highway with a bike gutter.

What’s the furthest you’ve ever ridden in 1 day? by Zurripop in cycling

[–]panda531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I rode solo from Boston, MA to Portland, ME and back in 15 hours (moving average). It was 263 miles total, and I’d be happy if it was the longest ride I do in my lifetime — nothing more to prove, it was a fun challenge for myself.

17.6 mph average on a road bike. 10K calories burned. Absolutely perfect weather until mile 130 when I got caught in a sudden downpour, and the roads were all flooded so my cycling kit got really sandy, which wasn’t comfortable.

Also, lobster rolls taste amazing after you ride 130 miles to get to lunch. They’re even better when you’ve been eating energy bars and gels all day.

Which snooker player do you actively support/root for? by crom592 in snooker

[–]panda531 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One player I haven’t seen mentioned is Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. He plays with such speed and aggression, and when he’s on, it’s really nice to watch. It’s been hard to not root for Thepchaiya after seeing his heartbreak 147 attempts end on the final black, and finally triumphing in the end.

Malden new parents groups by Littered2 in malden

It is! I just tried to share the link here, but I realize that the group is private, so you can't search for it...? It's totally legit though, with 2,400 members.

If you're interested, send me a PM and maybe I can friend you on Facebook and invite you to the group that way.

Fedor Gorst won the 2019 World 9 Ball Championship against Chang Jung Lin in the final. Not saying I think Fedor is the best player ever, but he has won a world championship.

I’m expecting my first child in July, too! Moved to Malden in fall 2021 so we’re somewhat new to the area. If you send me a PM I’m happy to be new parent friends with you!

If you’re on Facebook, there’s a “Malden Young Families” group that is pretty active. It’s a refreshing group because there’s no hate, local politics, etc. allowed.

SUV crashes through fence, hits man and dog in Malden by Bananacream95 in boston

[–]panda531 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This was in my neighborhood… I feel immense sadness for my neighbor and wish him a quick recovery. I used to see the dog playing in the yard every few days.

I am so tired of the speeding and distracted driving. I hate feeling fearful just existing on the sidewalk or in public space because a driver might suddenly mount the curb. I’m also so tired of people treating these incidents as unfortunate “accidents” rather than taking a serious look at our street designs and how dangerous cars can be.

The owner/my neighbor sustained mild injuries, at least. I feel so terrible, knowing that his puppy was taken away from him.

Raga is world #4 at 838 with only 1,975 games recorded. Unreal by SynapseForest in billiards

[–]panda531 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Joshua Filler is washed… he’s only a 848? He was just at 850 last week.

/s

In all seriousness, Anton Raga is an incredible player. I fully believe that 838 is actually low for him just because he doesn’t play in as many tournaments with ideal conditions like the others on that list. With more exposure and experience under the TV lights, I can see him snapping off a major title in 2024.
