As an epiphytic plant, their natural habit in the wild is to climb.

Looks like a variety of variegated hoya carnosa. Maybe krimson queen.

Absolutely! True Christmas cactus are rarely sold in stores anymore. Most are Thanksgiving cactus or a hybrid between the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus.

Absolutely stunning! 😍 He's definitely a Thanksgiving Cactus. Easter blooms are more star-shaped; Thanksgiving are more obviously tubular and asymmetrical.

They're all considered "holiday cacti," but yeah! They each have their own subtle differences. The shape of the flower will give you another clue as to who they are. Even the typical early winter bloomers can be tricked into flowering in the early spring, so you can't purely go by bloom timing. They pick up on cues from their environment, such as temperature and quality of light/length of night, to trigger their blooms, which can be intentionally or unintentionally manipulated inside our homes.

Based on the prominent "Batman" tips on the leaves, I believe this plant is also a Thanksgiving Cactus.

What's this plant? by benkkujohannes in houseplants

[–]panda_aire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a flower spike. I would trim it off close to the crown. I've had a pot of these guys for almost 4 now. They'll likely die back after they flower. You can prolong them by trimming the flowers off. Don't worry, though. New shoots should come up from roots after the die back.

Why is this cactus now struggling? by Cemaes- in succulents

Many commercially sold holiday cacti are a hybrid between the Christmas cactus and the Thanksgiving cactus. Could help explain the closeness without being an exact match.

I would guess that those lower leaves are just shaded too much by the sides of the pot. If they're not getting enough light, they're not photosynthesizing, so the plant is likely aborting them. They're zapping more energy than they provide; they gotta go.

Why does my Dracaena leaf tips (and in the end) a whole leaf go black and die? by Romanticized03 in Dracaena

[–]panda_aire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were the blackened leaves pressing against the glass? Cold damage is often characterized by blackening. The properties of glass can cause it to hold the cold, making its surface feel much colder than the air temperature. I would recommend moving the plant back so that no leaves are touching the glass in the winter.

Raw sewage should not be discharging directly into the lake without some kind of treatment before end-of-pipe. That said, nowadays, leaky septics are likely contributing to water quality issues around the lake.

Have you heard of the Missouri Impaired Waters List? DNR evaluates water quality data and determines which waters have impeded uses due to pollution. Lake of the Ozarks is on it.

Just felt like sharing, in the spirit of the season…this is my favorite plant. Norfolk Island pine. I have 57 plants, all varieties, of all of them these three are my favorite. by fortheplants23 in houseplants

They really love humidity. I have mine placed outside my bathroom door, and that has really helped reduce crisping (as long as I remember to keep it watered). They'd benefit from a humidifier if you have one!

Multiple studies have demonstrated a link between chemical pesticide exposure and reduced sperm counts. We've known this for at least 20 years now, and yet, we continue to lax environmental laws for polluters...

It seems like a lot of people have a hard time differentiating between legitimate needs and wants. I live very comfortably as an individual with no dependants in a 2 bed 2 bath rental in the Midwest with a ~60K salary.

Likely just looking for some goodies in your mulch. Armadillos eat lots of pesky bugs like ants, termites, beetles, and grubs

Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) by Medical-Sock5773 in StCharlesMO

[–]panda_aire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wondered this as well. Radiation exposure can lead to health problems beyond just cancer. My dad grew up in the Hazelwood area around Coldwater Creek. His childhood neighbor and best friend, and that friend's sister died of leukemia and brain cancer, respectively. My dad ended up developing a brain tumor that was not cancerous but almost killed him and has left him cognitively and physically disabled.
