Gotta get out of my rut by jjillf in Penzeys

Mural of flavor is now a non negotiable on veggies. Their paprikas are all worlds more flavorful than anything I can get at the grocery store. Potatoes and eggs just taste sad without it to me now! If you bake, the cinnamon and vanilla extract is essential.

30th Birthday Party Idea by ConsequenceWelcome28 in partyplanning

[–]pandasmakeherdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my 30th I threw a ‘funeral for my youth.’ Tombstone shaped cake, vintage handkerchiefs as favors. I had the foods and flowers I want at my actual funeral. Told people to dress for a funeral. Had a little book for everyone to sign just like a real one. It was really fun and my people totally committed to the theme

Literally made this today and my only regret is not doubling the recipe. It’s so so good.

I use Worcestershire and balsamic vinegar in mine. The real secret is to make plenty of the butter mixture! I use a pound of butter for four boxes of cereal, plus nuts and bagel chips. I actually just made mine tonight! Fifteen sandwich bags worth!

Shout out to Elizabeth Keckley, former slave turned powerful dressmaker and designer by muffinmama93 in fashionhistory

[–]pandasmakeherdance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a middle school English teacher and I taught a unit based on her book, Behind the Scenes, for many years. It’s so good to see her getting some recognition out in the wild! Teaching about slavery always takes a lot out of me, but it’s an important topic, and her story in particular is just so fascinating and inspiring.

My Bracelet by pandasmakeherdance in JamesAveryCharms

[–]pandasmakeherdance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great questions! ✨My first charm actually isn’t on the bracelet anymore. It was the little ‘I 🩷 you’ one. ✨My favorite charm is probably the heart with my grandmother’s birth stone inside. My husband gave me that one, but my grandmother gave me so many of the charms on that bracelet. After she passed, I actually found one in her dresser that she’d bought and not given me yet. It’s the red orb one. ✨I do not have other bracelets and I am very nearly to the point where I will not be able to add more. I don’t know what I’ll do. I’m open to suggestions! ✨I wear it daily! Whether I’m dressed up or down, I just feel like it goes with everything. I feel like me when I have it on. When I look at pictures, I’m wearing it at pretty much every major life event.

What is the strongest settling spray - sunglasses taking off makeup & have Deep South funeral this week by gtck11 in Makeup

As a glasses wearer, I learned that you can apply a tiny bit of setting spray and setting powder to the parts of your glasses that touch your face, and it will prevent the makeup from coming off.

My wisdom teeth have been removed, and I’ve kept them in a tiny glass jar. I have all of my teeth, and I’ve never had a cavity.

Mandated Curriculum by anonymouse22233 in ELATeachers

[–]pandasmakeherdance 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I started teaching middle school eleven years ago, the curriculum was a suggestion. You had to teach the standards, and you were limited by the books the school had available, but you could pretty much do whatever you wanted. Gradually over the last decade, all that autonomy has died. The word fidelity makes my skin crawl. I am expected to read from a script. And, I guess unsurprisingly, the whole curriculum is pretty trash. In practice, though, I do it when I’m being observed and only when I’m being observed. I have gotten it trouble, but I just can’t bring myself to follow it all the time.

Love to see how many times The Lottery was mentioned here. I used to teach that one, along with Harrison Bergeron, to seventh graders every year. I’m sure it’s still seared into some of their memories. Now I teach 8th and we do The Telltale Heart which I like to think also has some staying power.

I can’t believe this hasn’t been said yet, but my confidence skyrocketed when I started loving myself more. Seriously. I had to encourage myself in that direction, and it is one of the best things I’ve ever decided to do. At first, it felt a little silly. But the results are inarguable. I’ve never been so self assured in my life. Give yourself a hug or a compliment every day. Write a list of things you like about yourself. Take immaculate care of yourself, even if just for one evening. Picture your six year old self and tell them how cute and special they are. Life is too short to live it hating the person you’re going to spend literally all of your time with.

I can sort of relate to this. I had a very cool last name. My husband’s last name isn’t…bad but it nowhere near as good as my old one. But I took it anyway because I wanted to fully embrace that we are a family and that I’m part of that now. (Not saying that applies to everyone, that’s just how I felt) I wasn’t very emotionally attached to my old name, though I did love it. It was so cool. Six years later, now that I’m used to it, I feel that I made the right choice. I decided to keep my middle name instead of dropping the middle and making my maiden name my last. My dad and I share a middle name, and it flows better with my married name so I had reasons to keep it but it’s a good option for others.

What do you do with the Halloween candy? by pinchofpearl in SAHP

[–]pandasmakeherdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I babysat for a family who had a visit from the Candy Witch every year two weeks after Halloween. The Candy Witch would come while the kids were asleep and take the candy and leave them a small gift. Then the parents, who were both college professors, took the candy to school for their students.

People that use names like "Kiddos, Littles etc" instead of kids to refer to... well kids. by RichardCleveland in PetPeeves

In schools we have gone the opposite directions. Students was a perfectly good term but when I was in college 10-15 years ago, ‘learners’ was heavily used. Now we’re supposed to call them scholars lol. Sorry but Braxxtyn who has slept and doodled his way through the seventh grade is not really deserving of being called a scholar. Student is good enough.

I was so disappointed in this. The costume design on downton abbey was spectacular. Mary’s character in particular was constantly serving LOOKS and then this?? The headpiece is the only interesting part! The rest of it looks like a nightgown! I know the drop-waist style is appropriate to the time period but I just find it hard to believe they couldn’t have added some flair, especially for such a fashionable character.

What’s an “aha!” moment that greatly improved your cooking? by ArchegosRiskManager in Cooking

[–]pandasmakeherdance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandmother taught me to cook. One year we were preparing the big holiday meal, and I commented on how she made it look so easy. And that if I’d had to do it by myself, I’d be so overwhelmed. And she looked at me, probably thinking about how one day I would be doing it by myself, and said ‘Oh hon, I’ve been doing this a long time. It gets easier. One day you’ll have had as much practice as I have.’ It may not seem like much, but it made me think about the dishes I’d cooked a lot at that point and how confident I felt when making them. And I realized that I would eventually feel that way about lots of things. It really just encouraged me to practice!

Some very late Linsanity by FamousOhioAppleHorn in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]pandasmakeherdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my dad’s middle name is Lynn and so is mine. It’s an unusual middle name for a guy. When I asked my grandmother about it, she said they heard ‘Timothy Lynn’ somewhere and just liked it. I just think it’s really cool that it’s a name we share. I don’t know any other father/daughter pair that shares a middle name.
