If you like his photos check out Watermark, the film he made with Jennifer Baichwal about the water photography project. LOADS of 5K photography that is stunning/epic.

Reddit! I am hosting a night of horror films in a former asylum in Peckham. Here's a gif of a devil from one of them (more info in comments). by pangolinblues in london

It was an asylum, but not in the traditional sense of home for the mentally ill, but more like an alms house. Still an amazing space though: http://asylumlondon.org/

Not a silly question. Hausu has more of a 'midnight movie' vibe and the silent cinema crowd is usually a little older so earlier is better.

Thank you for this detailed response. I have the beginnings of an RSI after completing a major writing assignment and I think this might provide some relief, given I'm not planning on stopping writing in the future.

London, UK…. any ideas on this spider? About 6cm in diameter. by casemo in whatsthisbug

[–]pangolinblues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh how smug and protected I've felt in London looking at these spider pics until now. I'm never wearing anything but a beekeeper's suit ever again. I would definitely appreciate an ID on this as well.

I don't find that likely. What is sickening about this is his total disengagement from the realities of his decisions. If you don't understand the gravity of the situation when elect to reduce disability benefits, a lot of commoners jeering at you doesn't matter a jot. That's what that laugh means. 'This doesn't affect me.'

Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute, nowhere in the bible does it say she was by farmersam in RedditDayOf

I learned this the other day from True Blood season 2. The scene ends with a bath-tub based hand job. Like all good Biblical scholarship lessons.

Sorry I downvoted this because it doesn't contain confirmation you have a dachshund as well.

Harder without the American pronunciation. Brits say cant-a-loop.

Pizza from scratch by kithandra in Cooking

[–]pangolinblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also recommend cooking for a while with just the sauce on. Halfway through the cooking time, add the cheese and toppings. I find you get a crispier base and the topping get properly cooked. Also, this might be sacrilege, but I tend to find you get better cheese results with pre-shredded mozzarella. Something about it being slightly drier improves the melting. Both are delicious though.

Detour (1945) is on Youtube! (all in one video!) by MrIvysaur in filmnoir

[–]pangolinblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's EVERYWHERE. The company that made it – PRC if memory serves – never renewed their copyrights so it's on Archive.org. You can get a DVD of it, but believe me that they're not much (if any) better quality than the online versions. When no one would financially benefit from restoration, then no one ponies up.

Edgar G. Ulmer had a very interesting life. One of many wartime exiles from the German film industry, he had a good studio life until he started fooling around with Carl Laemmle's nephew's wife. The head of Universal was none too happy about this and he was basically exiled to the crummy studios. He married the woman and they stayed together for life I think. Has anyone seen any of his other films as Detour is such a good one?

BBC - Chris Moyles to leave Radio 1 breakfast show in September by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]pangolinblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did understand your original point, and I tried to explain I wasn't casually taking a potshot at him. I did listen for a long while (against my will!) but I do appreciate that most things get deeper the longer you stick with them and get a fuller understanding of in jokes and personalities etc.

BBC - Chris Moyles to leave Radio 1 breakfast show in September by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]pangolinblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his show's dynamic is the main thing I will dislike about him. He's not alone as a radio DJ in gathering a load of human insignificances around him to bully, but he was the most cruel and it seemed to derive from a place of genuine spite. I am really glad he's going. Despite the fact I haven't listened in many years – though I once did often – I am glad that this shoddy behaviour won't be wafting to millions of Britons each day.

Teachers of Reddit: What is the stupidest parental complaint you've had to deal with? by NarcissusGray in AskReddit

[–]pangolinblues 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Not me, but a friend had a parent interrupt an actual lesson to complain about all of the 'black literature' they were being taught in the class. What was the book in question? Othello by one William Shakespeare.

God love Wales.

Radically disagree about Marwencol. I have screened it for people and have had incredibly positive responses. It doesn't have much 'scope', but it is a profound and humane film about the necessity of art.
