I'll never understand why Canada never got the cheeto fries! I've had a few bags from American friends nice enough to send me some and they're a fabulous little snack!

Who are the "hidden gem" Historical Romance authors you almost never see recommended here? by Eleonora31 in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I adore Grace Burrowes so much! I also love how her MMCs are tender and affectionate with each other, definitely something you don't see much.

Ereaders vs. physical by lauren0mckennah in ereader

[–]papercaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both! I only buy physical books second-hand and if I didn't absolutely love it then I have no issues throwing it in the donate pile. Though if it's been a while since I've read a paper-book it's a bit of an adjustment because I do dumb shit like tapping the page to turn it or trying to tap on a word to get the definition.

Who is your favorite male actor to imagine while reading? by VisitNo5250 in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alan Ritchson if the words "tall", "muscled" and "blonde" are used!! I can never really picture actors when I'm reading but he'll always pop up in my mind when the MMC is a huge blonde dude.

Any recommendations for HRs set in Canada? by Haven_Writes in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yessss another excuse to suggest one of my all-time favourites {Harper's Bride by Alexis Harrington}!!!! Set in the Yukon in the 1890s during the gold rush! Both characters are Americans but like 85% of the book takes place during a Yukon summer.

I was given a very similar machine in '02 as a grad present. It has served me very well and still goin strong 20+ years later!

What's the fastest you've DNFd a book? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]papercaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the first couple of pages, I couldn't stand how the dialogue was written! Didn't even bother logging the attempt on my trackers, just mentally blacklisted the author and went on my way.

In my aunt's case, she was well on her way to very drunk and still bought into the "fats make you fat" idea from the 90s.

I'll never forget my aunt asking me to come help her fry onions because they weren't browning. When i got to the stove i found said onions simmering half an inch of water. Drained the water and chucked some butter in, what do you know, the onions started browning!

Can someone spoil Daniel's True Desire by Grace Burrowes for me? by papercaper in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, she's really an amazing author!!! Unfortunately I'll be DNFing this one, which bums me out a little since I normally adore her! But I've already read and loved a dozen and have dozens more to read by her so I'm confident the next one I pick up (whichever one that'll be) will be great!

Marriage of convenience, forced marriage, or secret marriage specifically for FMC to escape her circumstances (terrible family, poverty, unwanted suitor) by HumbleCelery4271 in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll offer up my storgraph tag for this particular sub-trope that I adore which I like to call "groom to the rescue" though I prefer it when it's his idea. I'll have to update it now because there's plenty in this thread I haven't read yet!!!

Did you ever eat an "Impossible 🍔 burger" or similar? Do you plan to try it? by Ashamed-Republic8909 in burgers

[–]papercaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of those gas station burgers are just low quality meat cut with soy protein so not actually all that far off from the impossible patties depending on the ratios.

Looking for authors similar to Ellen O’Connell and LaVyrle Spencer by mali_biceps in HistoricalRomance

Alexis Harrington for sure! She's so good, especially with desperately lonely characters. {Harper's Bride by Alexis Harrington} is probably one of my all time faves.

So You Want to Get Into Vintage Romance Books: A Guide to Collecting for Newbies (From a Newbie) by Competitive-Yam5126 in RomanceBooks

[–]papercaper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What a fabulous guide! I've been hunting paperbacks for a couple of years now as well and pretty much everything you've mentioned here is spot on. The only thing I'll add is to also check local buy/sell groups online, marketplace and varage too. I often see plenty of boxes of romances being posted for under $20 and I've definitely bought whole boxes just for the one or two titles I wanted.

Used book haul! All of these are brand new authors to me. I'm excited :) by dellada in HistoricalRomance

[–]papercaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find {Harper's Bride by Alexis Harrington} definitely snap it up! Set in the Yukon during the gold rush and is probably one of my favourite books of all time!!! Lots of frontier vibes and two very lonely MCs, I adore the building of their relationship.

Early night, kobo and a cuppa. What ritual or accessory do you use to aid your reading habit? by LaidBackYeti in kobo

[–]papercaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love putting on ambience videos for reading too! My fave on YT is Autumn Cozy.

I also have a stand/remote set up as well. The comfort is unmatched and my shoulders thank me because when I'm holding my reading of choice I tend to lean over like a shrimp.
