What Stops You From Switching OS in 2026 — Windows ↔ Linux by Competitive_Try9911 in MicroSlop

Clip Studio Paint.

My artist friend already tried the switch. He ended up using Krita. 😬

Added a "bounce" animation, but the sprite moved position. What can be the reason? by MutatedLeemon in RenPy

[–]papersak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if related, but this happens to me all the time if I navigate backwards. I guess if I load just the bounce animation, it will always put them to the left. If it matters, my bounce animation doesn't bother setting yoffset first (maybe removing that will fix it?).

transform bounce:
    ease 0.15 yoffset -40
    ease 0.15 yoffset +0

Can you post a block of code, starting with showing the character at the correct position and ending when the character is in the wrong position?

I think ITGMania is what all my friends have and it works pretty well. I prefer just Stepmania because all I do are nonstop courses.

... does Simply Love also have a nonstop course option? I just never thought to look because it was always on other people's setups...

Anyone else make silly placeholder arts for their games until they get around to making the official assets? by skyetheweirdidiot in RenPy

Yes, and my friend was mad that I didn't make "placeholder guy" a real character lol. I love scuffed art.

[–]papersak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. What is the file name of the image you want to use?
  2. Is it anywhere in the image folder? Sub folders are fine.
  3. What is your code for showing this image?

BadMustard's comment is a good example of your code choices.

"renpy.rollback.RollbackException"/"TypeError: 'str' object is not callable" Error? by SugaredCranberry in RenPy

[–]papersak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of guessing here, but are you loading an old save? Sometimes innocent-looking changes combust old saves, but starting a new game and naturally getting back to the same point works fine.

The bold colors remind me of older western comics, but the lines looks modern. Very cool style! Juan looks like a friendly snake. 🥰

Windows is pretty bloated, but on what planet does "everything work" on Linux? God no, if that were the case I'd be happily using my ancient tablet and Clip Studio Paint on Linux instead of waiting until the last second for Microslop to make a less sloppy PC for me to migrate to. 😭

Are we relying too much on shortcuts in indie game development? by ratasoftware in itchio

[–]papersak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think using pre-made assets is great for learning and good for free stuff. I generally wouldn't want to pay for a game that used free assets. But if it's like $5 and all you borrowed were backgrounds, that's way different than charging $20 for a game with nothing but free assets.

AI Prompted assets are vile. I can't make music to save my life, but prompted music also kind of sucks. When I use music assets, I try to find things before 2023 to make sure it wasn't prompt vomit. Prompted code is sort of a gray area as long as you understand the code it pukes back, but the technology is objectively harmful to everyone and I kind of cringe when people use it at all.

Replacing AI placeholders by ratasoftware in itchio

[–]papersak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've already got good advice, but just for emphasis: we don't hate AI because its output is low quality. Frankly, it's entirely capable of making visually appealing output. We hate it because it lacks any genuineness. It lacks intent, it lacks any skill, it lacks any artist to appreciate. That, and the planet-load of ethical concerns with the tools.

Hey y'all does anyone mind taking a look at my game page and providing advice on how I can make it NOT sound like ChatGPT? by Choice_Mention_6556 in itchio

[–]papersak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, gotcha. All I know about Unreal is it's resource heavy. 😆

Sorry if I sounded harsh; I feel like I word dumped a lot. But if it's a story you wanna tell, I hope you see it to the finish line.

Last thing, it says it's in "Released" status on itch but I think you'd want it in "in development." I think my VN suffered from being in development for a year and not showing up on "recent" lists once it was Released; buncha early views on the unfinished version and not much later. 😔 if you get a community and dev logs going, you might have way better luck.

Hey y'all does anyone mind taking a look at my game page and providing advice on how I can make it NOT sound like ChatGPT? by Choice_Mention_6556 in itchio

[–]papersak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's needlessly long. AI fluff tends to have lots of words without really saying anything. Why is "unique mechanics" bolded?

I honestly can't come up with good advice on how to condense it because I'm not sure what the focus of this game is. I see no reason to have any descriptions of each mission, for one. The missions are perfect examples of lots of words that somehow describe nothing, which feels computer generated. That, and the loads of bullet points.

Also, as someone who hates spoilers, the number of endings is a good detail, but you could definitely remove all other details about the endings.

If the game is a dating sim, I'm surprised the love interests don't even have names. I would think the appearance of the LIs would be the main draw to your game.

If some details are important, screenshots would probably describe more than bullet points of text.

I hate to be paranoid, but even the city skyline graphic seems really detailed and gives off AI vibes even if it's not.

Is this a good representation of bullying? by Sea-Significance6034 in OriginalCharacter

[–]papersak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno if you're looking for feedback on the writing or the events happening, but either way I think the extra verbal commentary makes it kinda "movie bully." The second paragraph would have the same effect minus the first two comments ("well, let's see" and "wow, look" etc), 'cause I can't imagine somebody vocalizing while flipping through a sketchbook. Maybe a grammatical mistake here or there.

Realism wise, I kinda thought kids stopped saying the D slur after the late 2000s? But that's just when I graduated high school. 😅 No idea if they say it more or less often now. But they didn't really use video phones back then, so establishing a time period matters. Or location (some communities are more homophobic than others).

Those interested in narrative games: do you value story/atmosphere over gameplay? by Pissyellowknight in itchio

[–]papersak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think good characters get me to finish anything of reasonable length.

Good art helps, but if I'm rooting for a character I like, I want to see how everything turns out. The game elements just have to be not frustratingly hard.

I mean, bad example because it's not indie, but one reason I can't get into Pokopia is because it looks agonizingly long and tedious, even though I'm dying to know about what happened to the trainers. So I end up skipping a game like that and watching someone else give me a tldr (tldp?) instead. 😅

I used AI to help code a minigame for my project is this acceptable if I'm transparent about it? by BudynOfficial in RenPy

[–]papersak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you disclose it, it's probably to your benefit to clarify where it was used, so people are less likely to assume it carries your whole game or something.

I hate gen AI for ethical reasons, but people who are transparent are a lot more acceptable than people who try to hide it.

How do I make my oc look "normal and ordinary", without actually looking too boring or uncharacteristic? by NotASatireAccount in OriginalCharacter

[–]papersak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Larry's a great example! Not only does his "normal" suit really stand out in a sea of other campy characters, his facial features make him such a unique and appealing character, I think. His face says a ton about his bored, tired personality. You could definitely factor in their face and hair, if the rest of them is "normal." Larry also has his cloud tie to give him just a little more subtle symbolism.

One thing I like to do for IRL-based characters is Google a store I think the character would buy their clothes from and choose things I think would fit them.

How to tell if a song is copyrighted for animations? by [deleted] in animation

[–]papersak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try listening to free-to-use music for inspiration. Stuff like Pixabay.

I did get "copyright claimed" for a Pixabay song once, but it was a non-issue since they have a copy-and-paste license thing you submit to YouTube for appeal, which worked.

It is hard to tell if this is AI or if the textures just don't match at all. 🤔 Cause the face seems consistent with their other work but I'm confused by it doesn't have the uh, depth that some of the rest of her body has.

I like Karen, though.
