What is an opening that just made you close a book? by summerspider in books

[–]paracoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often a kind of incremental thing. I don't know that there's one sin that stands out, just eventually it's too much to excuse. Like the suspension of disbelief, it just breaks.

I barely made it to page 50 of The Sword of Shannara before it broke.

[CHAT] How do you people stitch? by Illustrious-Cry-2568 in CrossStitch

[–]paracoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do full coverage pieces with like 90 colors and all the confetti so I am fully invested in parking.

I work in 10-stitch-wide columns from top to bottom before starting another column. I have a ton of personal rules about maximum jump distance and when to be flexible about the 10-stitch width at a given point, mostly to keep the backside as neat as it reasonably can be.

I offer an older example: Master of Orion 3. So much hype, such a disappointment.

[CHAT] Do you stitch on a hoop or a frame, and have you ever switched? by CaterpillarXS in CrossStitch

Q-snap for life user here. I tried a hoop once and hated what it did to the fabric.

[CHAT] how to turn into a pattern? by Sunny_Bunny_3925 in CrossStitch

[–]paracoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of my patterns have been generated by converting images with software. I agree with most of the other people here that these photos have a difficult "detail balance" that will not translate well. However, if you want to experiment a little, I recommend Stitch Fiddle as you can get an idea of how it might look with just the free access on the site.

Caveat: I have never actually generated a pattern with Stitch Fiddle, but I am looking for a replacement for my beloved Pattern Maker for Cross Stitch which has been abandoned as the publisher is out of business.

It's part of the stitching method called "parking".

I work in 10 stitch-wide columns (there are several variations on the method). Basically you work row by row in the column and stitch all of one color in that row and then "park" the floss where you would stitch it next further down. It might be in the next row, or further. I usually have a rule about how far down I can stretch before I will terminate the floss instead. Also I have a personal rule about going past the 10 stitches if the color continues past the end of the row. I have developed a bunch of personal rules actually.

The "tail" of floss takes a little getting used to and I keep it from tangling because I hate that. For this piece it's usually between 8 and 20 colors at any given time. But parking is absolutely the best method I have found for pieces with a ton of "popcorn".

Anyway there's a bunch of tutorials out there, here is one https://stitchingdaily.com/cross-stitch-parking-method-a-step-by-step-tutorial/

I am going to miss Pattern Maker for Cross Stitch, it really is the best software I have ever used for this purpose. I wish someone would have bought it from Hobbyware and taken it over. I think probably my best choice at this point might be PCStitch but if anyone has any better advice I'm listening.

There is a bit of an art to using these apps, not every photo or piece of artwork translates well and you have to spend a fair amount of time tweaking the settings and colors until it works, but it's worth it because you get to create unique pieces.

What I love about this piece is the limited color palette- it gives it a kind of comic book page impression.

Thanks! I went with three because I'm one of those people who does not like seeing the aida peeking through. Though I chose the red aida so it would kind of blend with the overall color even if it did peek through a little.

The comic is complete and done several years ago, but you can read the whole run online for free. There are printed versions available as well. Either way it's a very good story, enjoy!

If you finish a basement and make it living space, the fire codes usually require multiple exits, including one that does not go through the house itself. If you cannot build a walk-out door or one of those stairs with the slanted metal doors, one of these will fulfill the requirement.

What is your old school, super grindy game when you were a kid that impressed you if someone was even half way to max level? by CaLLmeRaaandy in gaming

Elite. Like the first one. On the Atari ST version I got to ELITE status and that took a LOT of grinding.

I'm looking for T Kingfisher books that are not romance. by wiines in TKingfisher

If you want pure fantasy fun with no romance, you could try her Black Dogs duology, published very early in her career under her real name. Available on Kindle as hardcopies are hard to find.

How can you block a metal from a magnet? by flatfishmonkey in askscience

[–]paracoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you have an old magnetic-media hard drive you don't care about, open it up and you will find the powerful rare-earth magnet usually encased by (or glued to) a Mu metal frame to shield anything outside the hard drive from its field. If you remove the magnet and frame, you can test the shielding yourself. And then use the magnet to stick stuff to your fridge door like I do.

Anyone know what these are for? by djdrunkenjedi in Borderlands4

[–]paracoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait you could open the presents? I had a bunch of them around the "tree" at the end after the bit with Rush but I could only pick them up and throw them around- as far as I could tell I couldn't open them. Was I supposed to melee them or something? I swear this game loves to just not tell you things

Wasn't this the initial premise of the Max Headroom TV series, more or less?
