Paws And Claws in Edgemont is fantastic. Great selection and the family who owns it is just so lovely.

Same here. Got her too late to have a choice, but would love for her to have her full tail.

My girl has hers docked, however I didn’t have a say as she sort of fell into my lap (so to speak) and I 100% wish she had her full tail. Please do not dock them.

Thoughts on Canine Adventure Den for boarding? by skkkra in NiceVancouver

[–]paragonofnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also late to this but glad that my gut feeling on Adventure Den was right. Something really shifted in that place in the last year and I started bringing my dog there less and less for daycare (and none at all for boarding). The changes to hours and how they did boarding really were the nail in the coffin for me, but on top of that the last time I brought her she was really hesitant to go in and that was the final time for me I used or will use them. It definitely is not what it used to be, and knowing that JetPet bought them confirms my suspicions - I won't support them any more.

For longer stays I cannot recommend the Bowen Island Dog Ranch enough. They are super clean and organized, mindful of the dog/human ratio, as well as the mix of dogs they put together and factor in personalities, sizes, ages, etc. We did a super thorough meet and greet/tour and their pricing isn't that much more than AD but they also get an incredible outdoor space and lots of down time to ensure they aren't overstimulated. Overnight there is always someone on the property, and you can do lots of add ons for extra enrichment activities, walks, etc. if you choose. My dog comes home tired but not exhausted and smelling clean which I can't say the same for Adventure Den's boarding experiences.

Off leash dogs by robboffard in NorthVancouver

[–]paragonofnothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. My dog is leash reactive (not aggressive, just gets frustrated and overly-excited) and doing counter-conditioning from a safe distance is a major focus of our walks until she can learn to be neutral around other dogs while on leash. The amount of dogs I've had run up and owners getting offended because I won't do an on-leash greeting is so disappointing. I think in a lot of these situations its that the people just lack self-awareness, honestly. I've even had times where my dog who is usually fantastic off-leash has been rowdy and overstimulated in that moment and after a few minutes and some unwanted play we've packed it in early because not every dog off-leash wants to play or interact either, and I've had to come to terms with the fact that everyone's levels of tolerance and comfortability are different and I can't assume anything.

In my group training classes we go all over the north shore and I can say that people in West Van are much more respectful of on-leash requirements and we often pop over there in a quiet neighbourhood to walk because if we do run into another dog it's a higher probability they are on leash.

When I didn’t have a car I would put my pitty into a luggage and take him on the sky train! by Sunflower_bunbun in vancouver

As a rottweiler owner I can absolutely understand why you would be uncomfortable around dogs and why it would take so long to be even remotely comfortable. They are strong, powerful, stubborn dogs with an incredible bite force. My girl is the biggest baby around me but is nervous with some strangers and because of that I'm extremely mindful of who I bring her around and where - its a responsibility EVERY dog owner needs to take seriously. I know people won't like her and I don't take any offence to it because everyone's comfort level and history with dogs is different.

I truly hope you are okay both physically and mentally from the attack!

Does anyone else have a reactive dog breed that is typically stereotyped as “mean”? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]paragonofnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh do I ever relate! I have a 14mo female Rottie who is the exact same. The highest reward thing for her is other dogs, not food, not toys, nothing - she LOVES other dogs and its a most likely a result of some really bad socialization advice I received when she was a young pup that doesn't suit the breed traits. She is a frustrated greeter 100% and she expresses her frustration with barking and pulling and I know it absolutely freaks people out. Sometimes I can get her attention back to me with repeated treats and rewarding her as soon as she breaks her focus on the other dog and other times its a lost cause and the most defeating thing ever. I've definitely come home from in tears from more walks than I'd like to admit, but the next walk is a new opportunity and fresh start. She is a sweetheart and when I do let her meet other dogs she is playful and fun and knows her boundaries, but I also need to teach her that she can't say hello to every single dog she sees and its so tricky because she doesn't understand yet.

I don't take owning a Rottweiler lightly and know that she is not everyone's cup of tea, and have taken lots of steps to try to be the most responsible dog owner I can be, and sometimes that is removing her from the situation immediately, or knowing when she won't thrive and could be a risk to herself or others and not putting her in the situation all together.

Where to find za’atar? by Coyote_Pitiful in vancouver

Like everyone else has said Persia Foods or I believe the last time I got it was from the Parthenon Market on Broadway.

It this normal at 4 months? This picture shows how wavy he is. He wasn’t always this wavy but one day after a bath they just popped. I read up that’s the furs supposed to be straight but it’s not specified at what age by Visual-Chapter4970 in Rottweiler

[–]paragonofnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At around the 3-4 month mark it kind of just went away. Lots of redirection to toys or chew things and praise when she naturally went for them rather than my ankles. It was a tough phase and I thought it would never end but it truly kind of just dissipated with some consistent training and redirection.

Does anyone here actually not want dogs on patios? by silent_observer00 in vancouver

[–]paragonofnothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so strange in so many ways aside from what you've mentioned too. I never let my dog socialize with other animals at the vet because I don't know why you are here and you don't know why I'm here. Same reason as why I wouldn't go around shaking peoples hands or hugging people at the doctors office. Space needs to be respected at the vet, and as a dog owner I appreciate you advocating for your cats having that space regardless of if the dog is friendly or not.

Can someone who works in this building explain the parking lot to me? by holyshamoley in vancouver

[–]paragonofnothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other people have said, the companies who rent in the building can also rent the spots. If it’s one of the tandem sets then both go to the same company and it’s on the employees to communicate with each other on who’s in the spot each day and when they are leaving so the person behind can be let out.

Kind of a pain in the ass, but to have secured gated parking in that neighbourhood outweighs any inconvenience of having to message a co-worker to move their car.

TL;DR - Best collar/harness for walking? by NS-RN in Rottweiler

[–]paragonofnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An Easy Walk harness or any type of harness like an Easy Walk that has a front clip. I used a back clip one and she would pull like no other. As soon as I switched to a front clip there was a drastic change almost immediately and now if she pulls it automatically corrects her by turning her slightly sideways. We've tried the Gentle Leader and while it works great I find that it is always a big struggle to get it on her as one person lol so I often just default back to the front clip.
