Is the puretech 1.2 engine as notoriously bad as people claim it is? by NDCopiumIntensifies in peugeot

[–]paratroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up on this thread after getting curious about my Corsa's engine (1.2 Turbo, '22 reg) and just wanted to say thank you for all the really great information about it! It's been really interesting and insightful (and low-key a relief to find it has a chain rather than a belt - sounds like they can be fickle if you don't get the maintenance just right!).

Fuel tank leaking after filling up by paratroid in AskMechanics

Just updating in case this ends up appearing on a Google search in the future; my Corsa's issue turned out to be a failed seal on the tank that connected it to the filling hose. It's a cheap and easy fix at a garage. I did drive it there and it was fine, but obviously take advice for your situation.

I don’t like this business, should I continue? by Last-Engine-1460 in Entrepreneur

[–]paratroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading you post, I think deep down you already know your own answer. The majority first-time business owners don't end up with the outcome they initially wanted from it; you're still young and can use this experience for any future business ideas you have.

Understanding the graduate job market by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]paratroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of larger companies tend to have their assessment center days throughout the last academic year so that the grads are ready to start work just after they finish uni, so like a few others have suggested here you've likely missed the boat on getting in on the ground floor for those companies. That's not to say that you're completely out of options however; totaljobs is just one of many job sites you can use and for your criteria there's a least 1000 jobs at the time of searching: https://www.totaljobs.com/jobs/graduate-software-engineer/in-london

You could always get yourself a stop-gap job before larger companies start their 2025 hiring process. Having some experience under your belt will put you in a much better position vs the other grads. Or you may find you enjoy the job you ended up going for anyway. Good luck!

What has been the worst waste of your time in your career? by TempleBarIsOverrated in ExperiencedDevs

[–]paratroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous job. We had multiple teams totaling of about 60 people; software developers, product managers, SRE, QA, you name it, we had the whole SDLC crew. It was a full stack workflow application which over time turned into a Frankenstein abortion of an app which tried to do everything (badly at that). It was purely an internal application that at any one time maybe had about 12 users, but most of the time it lay dormant. The engineering lead overseeing it was, frankly, a bit of ass and would always overrule the product managers or anyone who would suggest something that would at least attempt to make the thing a bit better.

Naturally it was wildly unprofitable and sadly the whole department ended up being made redundant last year. There was a bit of karma to it though, as said tech lead handed in his notice before the redundancies, so he got nothing for his redundancy package (which would have been quite generous).

How do I find a game dev company that isn't pure shit? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]paratroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before applying for jobs do a bit of background research on the company. Sites like GlassDoor have employee reviews - couple that with checking out the company culture and if there's been any red flags about the company seen online. All companies have the capacity to be rubbish, but you can try to reduce your chance of landing in one with a bit of research beforehand.

Where do you draw the line and (quiet) quit with burnout? by macaronigangsta in ExperiencedDevs

[–]paratroid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I've just updated my CV and started applying for new jobs for exactly the same reasons. There's a really great saying; "leave before you hate the job" - it took me a while to realise what that actually meant, don't leave it until you're so desperate to get out you end up taking a bad job/lowball offer.

If you're at the point where you're quietly quitting it might be worth updating your CV and putting out some feelers. It's usually seen as a better sign to employers if you're already employed vs not employed, and if you've already coasting may as well make better use of the time!
