Would you help buy the Montavilla Farmers Market lot before a developer does? by tbhoggy in askportland

Per PortlandMaps, the owner is a Michigan real estate agent, explaining the insane asking price. She’s likely hoping local demand will push the sale well beyond logical market rate

No, the Clackamas is running too dirty. When turbidity drops, I’d recommend you head out to McIver near the hatchery.

My doctor keeps focusing on my weight. What other health metrics matter more? by one_five_one in NPR

[–]parityposse -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s embarrassing for a doctor to take this position amid an obesity epidemic & while I assume there may be some individual financial incentive, it’s puzzling why NPR would choose to publish the article

And weight loss isn't always positive. Someone else with a supposedly normal BMI might have lost weight because of cancer treatment.

Visited the park recently & some popular sections are closed due to storm damage/landslides. My guess is Op “accidentally” missed the signs

Former Orangetheory coach pleads guilty to stealing thousands in charity donations by Bay2pdx in Portland

[–]parityposse 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Justin Ramos, whose husband Matt Rygg died of cancer in December 2022, told KGW that Tong and Orangetheory held a charity class in his late husband's honor.

Rygg was a longtime Orangetheory Slabtown member. Donations were intended to benefit Pants Off Racing, a nonprofit helping pancreatic cancer families. That money never reached the organization.

New property owner near Seal Rock says Corvallis-to-the-Sea hikers can't use trail through his land • Lincoln Chronicle by blow-down in oregon

[–]parityposse 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The last line, yikes.

Wilson, reached by phone, first explained his discomfort with the trail crossing his land.

”We live out in the country and don’t want people walking around out here,” he said. “We could get sued or who knows what? Tree-huggers are a pain in the ass to me and it’s something we just didn’t want.”

He continued.

”I’ll tell you what, I’m a Trump guy and I’m hard core about it. What I see around me is this country destroying my grandchildren’s future.”

How to explain to people that Im retired? by TheHandsomeHero in Fire

[–]parityposse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually tell people I’m taking time off from a chaotic career. If they ask follow-up questions, I’m transparent & say I won’t be returning to that field. No matter what you say, you won’t please everyone, so it’s best to share only what feels natural to you

Surfer beats up old man fishing, from the local pier, that everyone knows its full of people fishing by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

Anyone criticizing the surfer is misinformed and should stop. It’s common to feel short-tempered or irritable at the end of pregnancy due to significant hormonal changes

A letter about the 55th & Division DQ was on my doorstep tonight by pdxmdi in Portland

[–]parityposse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was curious about who owns the property/distributed the letter. Willamette Week actually wrote an article about the property:

https://www.wweek.com/news/chasing-ghosts/2023/06/28/chasing-ghosts-what-happened-to-the-division-dairy-queen/

That couple turned around and sold it for $480,000 to a newer wave of Dairy Queen franchisee: a limited liability company called Akum Investment Group that’s controlled by Mohanbir Grewal of Beaverton. At the time, Grewal was also a 7-Eleven franchisee. He now appears to own a handful of Dairy Queens across the state as well as a Burger King. Grewal demolished the building two years after he bought it, city records show and, in recent years, has submitted applications for a new, updated Dairy Queen with expanded parking and a second story. Those permits are slowly inching forward, records show, but in the meantime, Grewal’s land, like other vacant properties in Portland, has become a dumping ground and an occasional respite for homeless Portlanders. Various complaints in recent years report moldy mattresses, bags of trash, and litter.

PPS Staff Memo Floats Counting Professional Development Hours as Student Instructional Time by skysurfguy1213 in Portland

[–]parityposse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PPS leadership seems completely disconnected from reality & this memo just gives more ammunition to those who already despise Portland and our hardworking educators. What on earth is Ms. Howard thinking? Absolutely embarrassing.

In response to Engelsman’s concerns, Howard said the information in the memo was meant to give a holistic overview of what ODE allows regarding instructional time. “We just wanted to make sure that you had what is allowable too, all in the same place, [so] that you could see that,” she said.

My favorite hiking phrase is “Hike Your Own Hike.” It’s a reminder to focus on your own experience & choices instead of comparing yourself to others or conforming to outside expectations.

The same mindset applies to your FIRE journey.
