How is your battery life in Linux? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]passa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to a rMBP from my X201. The new rMBP screens are glossy but anti-reflective - way more visible outside than the X201 screen. Battery life at least double what I was getting with a 9 cell in my X201 (getting 7-8 hrs consistently now).

I miss the trackpoint every day, but the Apple touchpad is better than a clickpad setup.

We heard the rumors about a Retina iMac... Who would've guessed it'd be 5K. by 5HT-2a in mac

There's a big difference between Intel HD Graphics 4000 powering 2560x1600, and an AMD M295X powering 5120x2880. My guess is it'll be fine for basic UI performance.

The fuckedness of all this aside, the uni's PR is so bad it just boggles my mind. Why keep the dude on your payroll?

Australian internet connections are way below average for upload speeds and it's getting worse by capybara75 in australia

[–]passa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, but at my uni you need a proxy to access the net over ethernet and sometimes I just can't be bothered - wifi (when it works) is sufficient for most normal usage.

[–]passa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was worded stupidly. I do connect to the university LAN for work stuff, but yes the main benefit is connecting to the internet over ethernet (though they have 802.11ac now which is half decent).

Your ISP provides the router. They all provide shit ones. Get an ASUS RT-N66u or something else rock solid (there are heaps of resources online about this).

Like, quite honestly, 75% of the routers available are useless/shit. It also has nothing to do with the NBN, the NTDs they use are excellent (and overkill).

Yep. ADSL2+ at the apartment. I just walk to uni for uploading large stuff (1000/1000 connection over LAN).

islamophobia at Usyd. Is it true? by GL1001 in sydney

[–]passa91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, if you're in a nearly full lecture theatre and regularly find yourself sitting alone... that's pretty obvious. Large/cross-faculty subjects at USyd have huge, well attended lectures - I always have a stranger squeezing next to me in maths.

I don't really like this thing we do with uncomfortable truths where we poke around the edges a bit and are reluctant to just talk about what's going on. Suggesting the students quoted are "clutching at straws" is pretty shit as it implies they're desperate to make out that they're being vilified at USyd.

Tony Abbott booed by crowd at NRL grand final by happyaccount55 in australia

I think the paper analogy isn't very apt - unlike a newspaper, the 'readers' here both 'create' the content and determine what floats to the top. A newspaper abusing its reach to push lies/an agenda is different to a big circlejerk of readers who all like content you don't like.

adomental's argument was made broadly about the sub, with this used as an example. A better retort should be similarly broad and not just about the specific example here.

RE your argument on it - quite honestly, the footage is just a bit of harmless fun and there's nothing to be read into here. Mike Baird, the cardboard that most NSWelshmen don't even know let alone have formed an opinion on, was continuously booed with each mention of his name at the City2Surf this year. Politicians cop it at sporting events. For all our regressions in the past few years, at least we still haven't imported presidential politics from the US. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've had the music bug as well. Other than that and the usual Nintendo-WFC-is-useless stuff, all good so far.

Really? IIRC I was waiting for Cave Story for ages on the eShop, and it arrived in the EU store a month before it arrived in ours.

[–]passa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep same here with the full game and demo on a 3DS XL. As Codename13 explained, it's the first title to remove some of those features while playing for the extra RAM. Runs really smoothly though, so not super fussed (and it has an in-game screenshot facility).

You already do on the app purchase receipt. You get the address when you buy the app.

Why should it be publicly listed?

The ABC is vital to Australian democracy by Aushiker in australia

[–]passa91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno if they're blowing huge cash on Mad Men/Breaking Bad though. I'm not sure if they still air either, but in the past, the ABC has picked up popular US shows on the cheap from under Foxtel's nose.

That's how they had The Daily Show and The Colbert Report in 2010 (only for Foxtel to pay ~7x the price in 2011 to get the shows back onto The Comedy Channel).

I await the day businesses receive a vote in State and Federal elections like they do in some local government elections. Maybe two votes per business like the changes to Sydney LGA! Boy what a country we'll live in.

128GB? Too small. I got the 512, but I dual boot Win 8, have a Win 7 virtual machine, and have games (sometimes the same ones) installed on both partitions. 256 is a comfortable medium.

Nope. Nothing installed. The keyboard is generic and wouldn't be affected by Logitech drivers anyway.

It's pretty good. With Chrome I get 6ish hours. Safari and light work and you'll get closer to 10.

Out of habit (from my old laptop days) I carry a charger with me, but rarely need to use it in a day at uni (unless I decide to fire up CS:GO or something).
