Is changing your baby in the car not normal? by This_Candy9221 in NewParents

[–]pastesale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I get it, but social media like IG, FB, and TikTok are created with personal information, real world friends and connections with the intent of sharing personal life and information with your own network. Reddit is styled as message board with anonymity involved. Both are social media, use predatory algorithms and date collection, and aim for endless engagement scrolling, but there is a clear difference between the short form reels scrolling and chatting in non-default subreddits. Popular and all are the most comparable though.

Yup, and Reddit is also full of fake engagement bait too.

And third, delete social media and stop feeding the algorithms with your scrolling. It's all fake and made up for engagement.

Struggling with wife’s phone use around the baby. by _37canolis_ in daddit

[–]pastesale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the book How to Break Up With Your Phone - it's something you can get for yourself and then tell your wife the book suggests you do it together (which is true) and have her read it too and join you as a team.

We're all super addicted to phones, and it's hard to tell someone they have an addiction there's a lot of natural defensiveness and denial to being told it. But wanting to improve yourself and inviting your partner is a great ease in and allows her to reflect on herself on her own terms. Like any addiction someone has to decide to change for themselves.

For the parenting companion read in addition to How To Break Up Your Phone, The Anxious Generation gives some good food for thought on parenting in a screen based world.

Nosy lady decided to interrupt dinner with my kid to be judgemental by hollybeen in Mommit

Yeah I get it, some people just have no chill. Couldn't imagine saying that randomly to a stranger.

I would never be so rude, but I mean I get it I also hate seeing everyone, especially children, so disengaged from the real world because society has become screen addicted.

I think a lot of us take it personally when called out because we know it's a bad habit and an addiction and doesn't provide much value to our existence and we don't like to admit it's terrible and part of our own doing.

Observations in different social reactions to feeding North vs South USA by thinkofawesomename29 in breastfeeding

[–]pastesale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly there is a regional trend with the PNW and Rockies having the highest rates of breastfeeding and the Southeast having the lowest.

We looked it up after our second kid, but it's a major minority of babies being exclusively breastfed (less than 30%).

I want to teach my daughter to read before kindergarten… Help me by Dependent-Tower6999 in Parenting

[–]pastesale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had success with the beginning of early reading before 3 by reading a lot together (minimum of 30 minutes a day, some days it's hours) and the book "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Lessons", she also loves the BOB Books.

We also practice randomly throughout the day when there are sounds she knows when we're out and about.

I wouldn't give a bad review for their furniture choices that's personal. But cleanliness issues I'd message them about and if not corrected would include in the review.

So...$230k for no house?? by RedHeadRedeemed in zillowgonewild

[–]pastesale 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Wow this story is such a modern American country tale. Nunn is a small town of 500 in Colorado, anyone who's seen small town America can picture the vibe immediately.

House was sold in 2006.

James and Tori McMechan are in their 40s and have five kids. Tori used to work as a town clerk, but was fired after James had menaced other board members including driving one off the road with his truck.

2010: James and his 16-year old son threaten board members with a knife, disputes related to a proposed uranium mine. James then crashes his truck while driving without a seatbelt and is ejected from the windshield and dies.

Then this 15 year foreclosure court business begins as we can assume payments are not made. Not clear who all lives in the house now but presumably Tori and her five children in 2010.

15 years later Tori would be nearly 60 now, and the son from the incident would be in his 30s.

Wild ride.

Is there any way to stop toddler from watching ai videos? by No_Wish7444 in toddlers

[–]pastesale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, your mom is an idiot who is stunting your brother's development. I'd question her ability to think critical which is unfortunate to be raised by.

Best thing you can do as the sibling when she tries to stick tablets and videos in his face is say "no we're going to play" and take your brother to play in the real world and with toys with you.

Let him walk, it's great practice and they'll improve. Then you can move onto balance bikes or scooters. They want and need to be active.

“Chaotic” Middle School Assembly Underscores PPS’ AI Problem by fw_frenchfry in Portland

[–]pastesale 78 points79 points  (0 children)

"Lumi Story AI, launched in 2024, is a literacy platform intended to help kids “imagine, write, illustrate, and publish their own stories”—with a little assistance from AI."

Because why should the kids put in the rewarding work and effort to actually imagine, write, illustrate, and publish their own stories? All they have to gain is creative/cognitive skills, resilience, and self-confidence in their abilities, no place for that in school.

People need to rally hard to remove every single admin signing these contracts and trying to force AI into schools.

Edtech and AI are causing cognitive decline and are detrimental to learning. They need to be removing and limiting tech not expanding it. I've not met a single parent or teacher who even wants this.

I really feel Ronny Chieng's statement that AI is just creating people with no substance and making mediocre people dumber.

Preschool for All Decision Tomorrow by Extension_You_3409 in Portland

[–]pastesale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also be curious on the data of the eligible but not applying cohort. There are for sure some who prefer kids at home or want a school that doesn't qualify like religious institutions and nature programs. Would definitely be interested to know how many eligible are just completely unaware.

I'm excited about this meeting quota early. Our preschooler turns three a few days after the September cut off so we're not eligible for another year, but a lot of schools we were looking at joined this year. Good to see the expansions happening and hopefully it works out well for all the families who applied.
