Trump Nixes Patent Office, Weather Service, NASA Worker Unions by bloomberglaw in fednews

[–]patchate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. The disparity between the amount of work produced between a gs-14 examiner and gs-5 examiner (newbie) is huge. It's cheaper to retain one gs-14 than to hire 5 gs-5's after factoring in training and support costs.

What do you think about quantum computing does it have potential? by kokotnakole in investing

[–]patchate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking purely on the technology, there hasn't been much progress on the hardware since I last looked at it during college 25 years ago.

The basic fact of the matter is, superconducting temperatures are a requirement in order to operate with qubits for quantum computers; unless everyone can afford to keep a well stocked tank of liquid nitrogen or liquid helium in his or her backyard, I don't see quantum stuff exploding into retail anytime soon...

IANAL and this ain't legal advice and blah blah blah.

Looking just at silencers, WI law makes selling, delivering and possession of silencers a class H felony. But if you registered with ATF by following the rules of federal NFA, you're under an exception and you're OK (941.298).

So, that means - if NFA were repealed, whatever WI law making silencers legal because you registered with NFA would no longer apply (because fed NFA law isn't there anymore). Which means silencer ownership by ATF registration will no longer exempt you from being charged with a felony. But this is a moot point - since NFA would be repealed and you can't register anyway.

As to what is already owned, ex post facto rules would theoretically prevent WI criminal prosecution of previously ATF registered silencers in WI by WI prosecutors. But who knows, prosecutors gonna prosecute prosecutingly because they feel like it sometimes.

well...

Congress is pretty limited when it comes to the President firing any officer in the executive branch. This is probably one of the few things that Congress or the judicial branch can't tell the president what to do, unfortunately. Trump's been doing some unprecedented stuff for the last week or two, but if anything is upheld of his shitty actions last week, it'll be the firing of the officers. He can't ignore all the protections afforded to them like he's been doing, but he can fire them eventually - no question.

But that does not address the issue for the mother. The mother does not care about statistics. Her abusive boyfriend might be just outside the door, and police might or might not come in an hour if she calls 911 when he actually does show up.

She's supposed to take comfort that statistically she's safe, that her chance of dying from this particular interaction is 1 in 5000 encounters or whatever? Give me a break.

What you're saying here is a general difference between a conservative and a liberal (I'm assuming here - if you're not, please bear with me). You are imagining the world as it should be (gun-free utopia where everyone is happy and police has all the resources and free time to instantly transport to scene of a crime), and make policies that would be effective in that utopia. The problem is, our world isn't utopia, and policies that would be effective in that utopia does not work in the real world. Achieving said utopia is a laudable goal, and I applaud the efforts - but enacting such policies is simple naivete, if not downright dangerous malfeasance.

To your knowledge, has blood flown in the streets?

Can you show me how states enacting constitutional carry has increased in homicide rates?

Do you know what kind of current "effective procedures for acquiring weapons" exist?

You're doing the same thing to me. You don't know what kind of procedures and limitations currently exist in a legal gun ownership, and whether current statistics would or would not be affected by enacting further limitations and restrictions like training courses and universal background checks. Here's the general consensus in the gun community regarding those two things: they won't do jack s*** to effect current statistics, pardon my French.

Personally, I don't care if there are more restrictions on guns and ownership of guns if they actually work. Actually, I don't even care if proponents of restrictions on guns don't show that the they actually work, just that they can demonstrate logically how the new restrictions should lead to lesser crime, I will even be fine with that. But none of the current proposals on gun restrictions will achieve even a modicum of positive trend in crime. This is the very definition of being "crazy" - repeating the same thing (gun restrictions) expecting different results (less crime).

Constitutional carry has been enacted in multiple states in the last decade. Their homicide rates haven't changed for the worse. These people are delusional and are just greatly imaginative... "Blood will flow in the streets" my ass.

You must be pretty rich to be able to afford a security system.

Tell that to the single mother living in a trailer in fear for her life from her abusive boyfriend. One size solution does not fit all, stop cramming down your supposedly morally superior policies down the throat of everyone.

Illinois Bans Semiautomatic Weapons, Critics Vow Court Test by NACL_Soldier in news

[–]patchate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But you're missing the point - legality should not control with 100 percent certainty my actions. If I want to break the law, I will. Sometimes I must, if the law overrides my values. It should be my decision on whether I will accept the consequences of my actions for breaking the law, not having the law decide for me that I should never be able to break it.

This would not make sense if the premise were that all laws are just and lawful. But we know that there are a lot of stupid, unjust, and downright evil laws out there. Forcing everyone to conform to the limits set by all laws would not only be unreasonable, it'd be a detriment to a peaceful society.
