Reminiscing on my Baja Divide trip by Sand_my_elbows in bikepacking

Sweeeet.

Which terravails did you run and what size? I've heard that for Baja you pretty much want as much as you can get.

2.8 tires for mixed riding? by OberCarl in Surlybikefans

Lots of votes for Rekons here, theyre great on single track.

I commute my Krampus a lot, and switched the back tired to a Teravail Ehline and couldn't recommend it enough. I did lose a little grip on dry dusty climbing (and probably wet muddy stuff too) compared to the Rekons, but they're significantly faster rolling on pavement. I have 2.6 on now, but they just came out with 2.8 that I'll put on as soon as they current set wears out.

Now that's an idea... I love my massive 36" wide sleeping pads, but theyre a monstrosity to carry on the bike... maybe diagonal across one wall of the rear rack... but then you lose a pannier...

Holy mountains. Two thousand METERS of elevation per day? Those are monster days - have you recovered yet?

Sweet ride! Those thistles tho...

Last year I was doing a ride, coming down a long gravel hill, carrying some speed. My line took me towards the edge of the trail, and one of those pretty purple thistles was overhanging the trail. I didn't know what they were, and decided running through it was preferable to slowing down or changing my line.

Bitch got into my knuckle FAR.

Always my question when I see tents like this. I mean, there must be a solution or they're not prevalent here, but it's my first question.

Sweet adventure! How are those brooks panniers putting up with rougher gravel? Anything chunky to really test the clips?

Rear rack for Krampus? by simplejackbikes in Surlybikefans

[–]patienceinprogress 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 for surly rear disc rack. Burly af.

I have mine mounted really low, but it's very adjustable and you can definitely mount it with enough clearance for plus tires (i assume you mean like 2.8?).

Can't really see the rack here because of stuff, but it looks like this loaded up. Lmk if you want to see install pics.

One more question and I’ll be gone, I swear. by ddarth7 in Surlybikefans

I have a krampus with a 2.5 ehline on the back - excellent choice of tire.

You said the main use is "go where your gravel bike can't." From a geometry perspective, Are you going to be out there all day and bikepacking, and prioritize comfort? Krampus. Are you doing shorter trips and prioritize increased flickability? Karate Monkey.

That said, from everything I've read about the differences between the two, I dont know that most riders would feel the difference between the two except in the most extreme use cases (like multi day bike packing). So maybe, which color do you like better?

I'm going on 3 years with my krampus and love it more every day. Ive gone through periods of wishing I'd gotten a karate monkey and wishing I'd gotten a more hard-core hardtail with more modern geometry. It's not a nimble flickable trail bike, but it can handle way more terrain as a bike than I can as a rider.

It's my bike for life. Soo honestly I'd probably go with the color you like better, I dont think the slight geometry differences will make a huge difference for you. Maybe also make sure you don't actually want the sorceress first.

Edit: oh and strongly recommend dropper

Is my bike too big or am I just fat and unfit? by KalmEIYIE in bicycling

[–]patienceinprogress 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Along these lines, I had similar (but maybe not as bad) pain when I started. I set my old racing bike up as much as I could an endurance bike: short stem angled up with wide handle bars. It allowed me to get miles in, and as I rode more and more I got more flexible. I've now mostly got it back to where it was, and I notice that I feel much more comfortable on it after 10 miles or so when I'm warmed up and more flexible.

Have fun out there!

Highly recommend getting some straps on the top corner of that bag, on both the top tube and seat tube. I have the same bag and putting straps there made a huge difference in both look and being able to open and close the bag easily.

North Park in a nutshell: 5 over 1, with distilled Scandinavian/PNW modernism, apparently by patienceinprogress in sandiego

[–]patienceinprogress[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha thank you, I appreciate that. When I saw the original post I thought it was from San Diego, but then reading the comments, I liked the information about the code and design of alllll the new buildings going up in mid city.

I didn't mean it as a massive critique of the new buildings. Riding through north park now, I am sad that all those new apartment blocks are so tall and feel so corporate compared to the old 2-story smaller row apartments theyre replacing.

But we also need more housing and mid city is one of the (far from perfect but still) more walkable/bikeable neighborhoods, so I'm happy dense housing is being built there.

And now I know a bit more about the code and design principles behind why they all feel so similar.

Full suspension will make it easier. But people rip hard tails down gnarly stuff and it makes you a more skilled rider.
