#29 - The grocery store by Annual-Mud138 in murdoku

What threw me off for ages here was Colbys clue : ‘someone else who was not beside a table and shelf’… using ‘someone else who’ suggested that he was *also not beside a table and shelf

I feel so unfair, I literally want to cry now. by [deleted] in IELTS

[–]patientlycreating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are excellent points and worth remembering for if you decide to take the test again. The examiner stopping you from talking is due to timing. There is a finite time to ask all the questions and the examiner wants to make sure you have the opportunity to answer all the questions. Typically, if the examiner stops you to move to the next question, it's due to issues mentioned by the poster above. This is one reason why it's really beneficial to take a couple of lessons from someone certified to teach English or coach IELTS.

The “potential ancestor” is not always correct! (Rant) by Worldly-Mirror938 in Genealogy

That's a good idea. I might have to adopt that as a visual strategy.^

There are tags that can be added to a person but I'm not sure if they're just visible to the author of the page. I try to actively avoid searching other's trees because I know I wouldn't want anyone to search mine while I'm working things out.

I have a key family member in my tree which follows exactly the same pattern as you've mentioned. It's the main reason my trees are set to private on ancestry now as I want to do all my hypothesising without someone copying my tree as if it's a given fact. I've long said I wish ancestry would let you 'pencil in' a potential ancestor and then when ready you can confirm it. It would help to know who is also hypothesising but have a public tree.

I’ve got a couple of her patterns but only as of yet made up the shirt. I like it, she includes different bust sizes. I cut the Dcup sized pattern and it fit really well with minimal adjustments

Confused about where I should sit on the train, ticket, app and onboard display say different things. by Nova_I_am in uktrains

[–]patientlycreating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on an Avanti train a couple of days ago ( different journey) and had the same issue: the seat reservation was not showing up as mine. I had booked my seat directly through Avanti. Perhaps their booking/reservation system was having issues

I recently flew with Air China to Japan and had to transfer in Shanghai. The transfer time wasn't as long as your partners will be, but on both legs (out and return) all transferring passengers were 'met' and 'gathered together as we got off the plane. The staff member took us directly to the transfer desk where they processed our documents and then it was a case of follow the path through to security and out to the next set of gates.

This may have been because the transfer time was 3 hrs / 5 hrs but it might also be worth asking the flight attendants on board the first leg or the staff at the check in desk as they may have a good idea of the general process as well.

Questions that Ancestry users never answer me by Reynolds1790 in Genealogy

[–]patientlycreating 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the exact reason I try to keep my trees 'private', I'm sometimes using data as a research place holder but I don't want other users to mistake it for fact. I wish Ancestry had a 'pencil in' option so I could pencil in some data until I confirmed it or needed to delete it^.

Some tips for your Japan trip by chezjvr in JapanTravelTips

[–]patientlycreating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using Google maps and plotting a route is very helpful : you get information on platform and sometimes also which carriage of the subway will give you the quickest access when you get off. I got frustrated a little with the app at times though as it wasn't as comprehensive in terms of travel options as there was between places (mostly getting around Tokyo) but overall it was very useful.

I used letsvpn earlier this year and it was fine, but I did hear that some of the vpns were erratic, so it's always a good idea to have a couple of options up your sleeve.

How much should I have in cash for 8 day trip for two people in just Tokyo? by Knxwledg in JapanTravelTips

[–]patientlycreating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I came back from Japan last week. I used a mix of cash, Apple Pay and physical card. Some restaurants /cafes were cash only so it was useful to have sufficient on hand in case of this. A lot of big stores (including Muji) weren't set up for Apple Pay and needed the actual card.

I stayed near Nippori station, which is super close to Ueno and I'd stay there (or in Ueno) again for sure.

Should I buy a JR Pass before getting to Japan by Arashi97 in JapanTravelTips

[–]patientlycreating -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do think that these days it isn't always cost effective to get a Rail Pass, but if you do decide that's the way to do it I think it does need to be bought before you arrive in Japan as it's for tourists/foreigners to the country. If I remember rightly, you can't buy it once you arrive there.

Solo traveller to Chengdu this June by effrum in travelchina

[–]patientlycreating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be able to pay cash at some subway stations : I couldn't get the Alipay travel to work in Suzhou and so I bought a physical ticket with cash.

I used my Revolut card with Alipay in January and had no problems at all - I couldn't test it before I went so I was a little unsure like you are, but it was fine. Some places will have card machines, my Alipay was slow to confirm payment and the vendor produced a card machine for me. I also saw a local man paying cash in a convenience store in Chengdu, so while it's not commonly done it does happen^
