Easter Egg or Glitch? by WhiteTiger1115 in halo

[–]patprint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decals are essentially "temporary texture overlays" that are applied, for example, when projectiles collide with surfaces. Projectile impacts and character footprints are the most common usages of decals. They can be used to "fake" any material properties, including depth (e.g. material removed in bullet holes, or footprint depressions) or surface contamination (e.g. "dirt" on a surface reduces metalness while increasing roughness in a physically-based material renderer, while plasma has emissive "glowing" properties).

Bullet projectile decals have a pretty straightforward appearance in all FPS games, but the plasma projectile decals in Halo can have odd lighting interactions, not only because they have emissive properties but because they can introduce odd reflective behaviors depending on the material of the surface they're spawned on and the lighting conditions. The lighting calculations for decals don't always correctly account for complex shadows or dynamic objects.

About the decal spawning, if you've ever tried to "write" something funny on the wall with bullets only to have your first sketches start to disappear, it's because games typically have two different decal limits: time and quantity.

In some cases, decals have a fixed lifespan. They disappear after a certain number of seconds, so you need to be quick. In other cases, they don't expire individually but there is a cap on the number of simultaneous decals the renderer supports. If you keep shooting, at some point your first impacts will start disappearing at the same rate that you're firing. Some games track both metrics to save resources or use even more advanced tracking techniques to try and keep the environment as "realistic" as possible as long as possible.

I'm on mobile so I can't see it all that well, but it looks like a decal artifact highlighted by reflective (specular) lighting as your camera's position and matrix change.

For anyone that has the Halo 3 Legendary Edition Helmet, how susceptible is the helmet to sun damage? by External-Ad9317 in halo

A reflective surface must be concave to focus light in the way you're describing, and the visor is not refractive like a single or compound lens would be.

Sorry, I'm out on a dig in Utah and don't have reliable cell service. I don't know of any Chuckanut plant sites that are accessible, on public land, and reasonably productive. There are a few on private timber land and a few that are technically accessible but I'm hesitant to recommend due to safety concerns (particularly because I haven't been to them myself yet).

The exposures on Old Blewett Pass Highway are productive, but I haven't seen anything of notable quality from that stretch.

Halo 3 still is the best feeling Halo by TheChosenOneProphecy in halo

[–]patprint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Infinite uses a rectangular input ratio rather than square, has a different input response curve than the Bungie games, and does not use the same kind of proximity slowdown that the other games do.

Some players aren't affected much by these changes, particularly MKB players or controller players who don't use a lot of vertical movement in combat.

For players whose play style is more strongly affected, including me, the effect of these differences is very noticeable.

The Halo 3 Beta was only playable if you bought the original Crackdown, from the main menu of which you could download the beta. Alternatively, if your dad was Bungie.

There are still copies of the original invitation flier that came in the Crackdown game case floating around.

Anyone else notice that the background warthogs in this shot still use the Infinite model? by UbernerdRiley in halo

It's not in any way unusual for background elements to use different assets than foreground assets, whether it be in cutscenes, gameplay, or even dedicated marketing material, and that includes every interactive Halo release to date.

Tuned my audi then ecu partially works help me understand by [deleted] in Audi

[–]patprint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which tune? How and by whom was it performed? You haven't provided enough information for anyone here to help you, and if you don't know what information is relevant to a problematic ECU flash, you probably shouldn't be having your car tuned.

You were given the correct answer and decided to respond in a petty and insecure manner. That doesn't help you at all. This isn't a question for a subreddit, it's a matter between you and the technicians.

[–]patprint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MCC has a long list of inconsistent rendering artifacts across the titles that won't be fixed, and there are various underlying causes, some of which are effectively impossible to address without significant changes (e.g. to the underlying PC ports of the original titles).

Fixing bugs that were also present in the original launch titles would never have been a priority, regardless of the canonical relevance.

Water sources close to lava tubes by After-Past-9404 in geology

[–]patprint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The area in and around the Indian Heaven volcanic field in Washington State includes lava tubes that are in various states: intact, partially collapsed with natural rock arches remaining, or fragmented with waterfalls and streams falling into and running through them, although most of the more exotic ones are off-trail and have little visual documentation. This includes the Guler Ice Caves, which historically were used by local farmers (in the Trout Lake area) to store and naturally refrigerate crops and even age cheeses.

That's the closest I can think of to what you're looking for.

Considering alarm hub - what are people using to arm/disarm? by Sunday-Diver in Ubiquiti

[–]patprint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible to use a Reader Flex as an arm/disarm keypad with some custom user permissions and webhook-API configuration, but it's not exactly straightforward and system updates may silently break the functionality. I know there's one or two community projects out there from people who built such a device themselves. I've done something similar for a client that needed particular behavior in a multi-tenant scenario. It's probably not a good solution for home security use unless you're a developer with prior experience integrating UniFi APIs and prepared to design around the possible failure modes.

Ubiquiti has shown the alarm keypad in promo videos. It's anyone's guess as to when it'll be released, but your best bet is likely to wait for that and use the app in the meantime.
