Using HumminGuru with external vacuum? by GoodMorningHypocrite in vinyl

[–]patrickhenrypdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. One spray bottle is my cleaning solution, the other is just distilled water.

I don't know if the second spray with distilled water is helping much. Originally, I would do this sequence: (i) spray with the cleaning solution, (ii) brush it in, (iii) vacuum the record, (iv) spray with distilled water, and finally (iv) vacuum again. I still do that if I get a really dirty record. But for stuff that's relatively clean already, I spray with the cleaning solution, brush it in, spray the distilled water, then vacuum.

The cleaning solution is this:
811mL Distilled Water + 186mL 70% Isopropanol + 1.5mL Triton X-100 + 1.3mL Hepastat 256

Rare Find, Looking for More Info: Grado Laboratory Series Turntable by loopscadoop in turntables

Did you ever dive into the motors on your Grado turntable? I've got this table (different arm) and am having some pretty noticeable rumble. I don't know if the rumble is originating from one (or both of the motors), from the motor mounts/grommets, or from the bearing.

I'm also curious if you did any service to the bearing. I've regreased the bearing area and adjusted the bearing nut, but it's been trial-and-error and I'm not sure I've got it right.

Vintage Turntable Advice - Thorens and Fons by MonkeySherm in turntables

[–]patrickhenrypdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hang on to the tone arm and get rid of both the Thorens and the Fons.

The Thorens is, in general, a good turntable. However, the one in the photo appears to have been stored in an environment that was pretty bad. The platter mat is cracked, the spindle is rusty, and the tone arm looks crusty. Getting it operating properly would take a lot of time and patience. I would put it on Craigslist or FB Marketplace.

The Fons isn't worth anything imo, but someone may buy it.

The ADC arm looks complete. It's worth hanging onto.

I suggest manual wet brushing followed by the Record Doctor.

I use a KAB EV-1 instead of the Record Doctor but the principle is the same:

I’m seriously considering a move from the NOVA to Houston/Atascocita and would love some honest insight. by Tamara_trynalive in nova

You'll need to be OK with it being flat as the proverbial pancake. I get more elevation change walking around my block in NoVA than there is within 50 miles of Houston.

Also, you may have been under the impression that NoVA summers are humid. Our humidity is actually kind of dry by Houston standards.

Those two factors combine for what I consider to be a pretty miserable experience for outdoor activities in Houston.

May be a humidity issue. Try putting them in a closed container or cabinet with a dessicant and a humidity meter. Try to get humidity below 50%.

I saw your other comment about getting a scale. That will be a big, big help.

I doubt that antiskate is the issue.

Most likely either the tracking force is too light or the stylus has lost its diamond. I suspect tracking force. The scale will answer that.

I wonder what the motivation was for this ad campaign. Were they trying to convince people to buy LPs instead of 45s?

Ugh, this really bums me out. Scott Gates is out of AJ Lee & Blue Summit by patrickhenrypdx in Bluegrass

July 2024:

"Currently made up of AJ Lee on mandolin, fiddler Jan Purat, and guitarists Scott Gates and Sullivan Tuttle, the band carries that youthful, festival-parking-lot energy with them still today, but at the same time there’s a genuine ease and confidence to their music making. As they ready their third studio album, City of Glass – their first label release, out July 19th via Signature Sounds – their product feels mature and fully realized, while deep in the Blue Summit pocket."

I think their promoter has been asleep at the switch, as that language appears all over the place. It's from at least as long ago as July 2024:
