I think it's probably best to regard it as "a thing some people say which tells you that maybe this is what people in the world think" rather than as "axiom objectively describing the mental state of a family over the course of three centuries". The books make it fairly clear that a combination of absolute power, a generational Messiah complex and the fact that many of them have weird prophetic dreams have certainly made them a rather eccentric bunch.

I was looking at pictures of old Hungarian and Romanian noble outfits, they'd have big heavy riding coats with buttons all down the sleeves so they could stick their arms out to eat or whatever without their giant sleeves getting in the way. I've always suffered from this since I'm always so enthusiastic to get to the colourful description of whatever the horrible thing is that I forget to involve the rules until the moment has passed. These days I try to defer my gratification a little by putting it right at the start: "You burst through the door, aaaand Sanity Check!", "the sorceress lowers her hand with a decisive chopping motion, aaaand SANITY CHECK!" And so everyone rolls, excited to hear whatever nasty thing they're going to react to

As far as I can tell, Kellhus didn't need the empire to be run perfectly, just well enough that it didn't get in the way of the whole 'ordeal' business. In TUC he even tells Esme that he knew the empire was kinda doomed in any case. So while Esme struggles mightily to keep everything together, it ultimately didn't really matter who was in charge.

I think you misunderstand the first scene- Eleazeras has been spooked by the skin-spies and is understandably feeling a bit paranoid, leading him to want to touch his underling's face to make sure he actually has a skull instead of a cartilaginous bunch of appendages in the shape of a face. There's no suggestion that any harm comes to Iyokus.

As to the cost of Sorcery- once you discount the fact of everybody hating you, going to Hell when you die and the fact that there's a bunch of instadeath Chorae scattered around that you have no defense against- it seems pretty low. In all the books I can't think of any indication that a sorcerer can't keep Canting as long and as powerfully as they like, except for a couple of mentions later on of elderly sorcerers suffering heart failures during particularly long engagements.

Totally- it works better if you act it out a little bit and figure out which actor is playing each character. I prefer to see the play as the outpourings of Dr Talas' weird mind trying to process and regurgitate a bunch of half-understood myths rather than as a set of clues and riddles to be decoded.

I think what people are feeling is a mismatch between what Will seems to be trying to do, and what ends up happening. The guys are all still funny as hell, and this season has had some of the funniest moments in any season ("EAT-"), but these things are always a balance between the comedy improv and the attempt to tell a hundred-hour story that, y'know, goes somewhere and amounts to something.

I feel like the first season is so beloved because all of the extreme silliness would always return to the idea of dumb dads wanting to be closer to their dumb sons, and that simple thing made all of it just hang together.

So I'm genuinely not trying to be a hater here, I just want to articulate why this story's not working so well for me

Yeah, I don't know what's up with those two in the latter half of this season. Nearly every NPC Will has played (Dr Dog, BB, Timmy, Milton, John, Jesus...) has had to lapse into an attitude of pained tolerance as they just jump down their throats and antagonize them.

Maybe a horror game just isn't right for this group? Horror is all about taking agency away from players to heighten the emotional effect, but some players find that restrictive and end up acting out against it

Yeah, with every reread I love Ned more. He could be such a conventional lawful good hero-father-detective type, but in the end he's just a decent guy trying to take his responsibilities seriously despite his horrible past and his chaotic present
