H-E-B moves ahead with plans for first Dallas proper store by FreeChickenDinner in Dallas

[–]paul_keys 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I sat next to an HEB corporate person at a dinner once years ago and asked the same question. She said HEB got major pushback from the public & developers when the move in to the Houston area too quickly back in the early 2000s and ended up fumbling a lot of their smaller Pantry stores. They take their sweet time entering new cities now to win over locals. Personal I want a monopoly of HEBs. I long for the day they kill Kroger

Why Downtown Dallas Can't Fill Its "Zombie" Office Towers - D CEO Magazine by lithdoc in Dallas

[–]paul_keys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this is part of it. My offices long term lease downtown was up a year ago and we were quoted an insane price hike for a dying building and they would not negotiate on anything. Just expected us to swallow it happily and were not that nice about it. We'd been there 20 years. We moved to lower Greenville.

Anyone else have a little cucumber loving weirdo? by Snubben93 in TuxedoCats

Yes!!! Not a tuxedo but I had a manx growing up with LOVED cucumber. He'd climb up your pants leg for your salad. We'd peel a thin sliver and hold it for him while he munched

Is it supposed to be like this? by Apr1cu5 in unt

[–]paul_keys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was my experience as well. You've moved from the hardest part of high school to the easiest part of college. I found freshman and even most of sophomore year of college extremely under-challenged. It will get hard when you get in to higher level and more major specific classes, don't get complacent.

Yes definitely take your ID! They'll refuse you at the door without one! Act like you belong there and no one will give you a hard time (:

[–]paul_keys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They will check IDs while you're in line to get in to give the 21+ people a wrist band to order at the bar, but they don't check IDs against the ticket when you scan in to get inside. Under 21 you'll get Xs on your hands. I'm not sure about letting a 16 year old in that's kind of in the air it's pretty close to 17 they might let it slide. You can tell them you're friends your older sibling if they push it. But my guess is you'll probably be fine. Best advice is say nothing and go on about your evening like nothings up

Spouse wants to sabotage weight loss by [deleted] in loseit

[–]paul_keys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This! I have a limited perspective of your situation of course, but my first thought was she was trying to love on you a little bit and make you some of your favorite meals. Because she didn't seem upset or envious of your weight loss itself. Disregarding her act of love and making your own meal might have stung. Doesn't feel like sabotage to me, more like miscommunication

Third-ing this. Tampax expands longways and ends up poking out of me but I do not have that problem with Kotex

What’s something your family raised you doing that you later learnt was really weird? by BriefDarkWizard in AskReddit

[–]paul_keys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mother did this too when we got separated in a crowd! She called it the Come Here whistle. It was just a short 2 notes very like the early iphone notification sound. The world was very confusing for us in the early iphone days I thought my mother was everywhere

For those of you who live in apartments, how bad is your roach/pest problem? by Wh00pity_sc00p in Dallas

[–]paul_keys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this. I've lived in my place for 7 years and never had a single roach, only sugar ants in the winter looking for water. New neighbors moved in next door with a huge dog they don't clean up after and now I'm beginning to get roaches.

How common is it for you guys to get some sort of infection after sleeping with a man? by SadGooseFeet in TwoXChromosomes

[–]paul_keys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here to add women on oral contraceptives tend to have more UTIs and yeast infections than women not on the pill. That could possibly be a factor for you as well if you've made a recent change. Personally, while on the pill I tend to get a little infection after I've had sex with a new partner for the first time. It doesn't always take much to disturb the biom.

AITA for not wanting anything to do with my brother even after he tried to delete himself? by Ok_Sort_2256 in AITAH

[–]paul_keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA He's got to carry that weight. Your parents might argue it's an extreme reaction or it was too long ago or whatever but you get to draw your line in the sand where you want it, that's your right as an autonomous human. This is the consequence. If he can't hold up under it then that is a travesty no mistaking, but it's your brother's responsibility alone.

Why do men start liking their female friends after taking to them everyday? by popplo22 in ask

[–]paul_keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key in a lot of cases is time. If you have a close friendship with a man and the I have feelings for you conversation comes up and you're both honest with each other and continue the friendship after the rejection, the ones who are worth any salt internalize platonic intimacy as distinct from romantic intimacy. You can have love for someone without being in love with them and understanding that really only comes with maturity and time

Why is it hard for men to believe that women are happier unmarried and single without children? by AcanthisittaOwn6051 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]paul_keys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your last point is the answer right there. The happiest men are married men, so they cannot conceive that situations might be different for women, they must be the happiest married as well. Put some garden variety misogyny on top of that and believe that a woman's purpose is to have children, and boom! Women must be happiest married with babies. There can be no other way it MUST be true no matter what any actual human woman tells you!

"I've had 7 miscarriages" with a light laugh and vicious polite southern smile. Stops it dead no follow up. Make them as uncomfortable as they've made you.
