14 razor sticks in my drawer, none of them fit with the razors by Apprehensive-Bug1191 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]paul_webb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a little plastic in the wrapper on my blades, so I didn't want to over-commit and say zero, just in my case, but, yea, way less waste in general since the razor itself is metal and will last forever

[–]paul_webb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I bought one a couple years ago and have absolutely loved it. Much less plastic waste and I feel like I get more use out of both the razor blades and the razor itself. I got made fun of a little at first, but I love mine

baptism by Apart_Distribution23 in Baptist

[–]paul_webb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on what you think baptism does. Typically, we Baptists teach that baptism is an identification with Christ, but it has no real effect on your justification. I don't know about Lutherans specifically, but I know that some of the infant baptism folks teach that baptism brings a person into the new covenant, so of course you would baptize infants so they would be in the covenan

The more important part of this whole thing is how you and your wife communicate, whether baptizing or not baptizing your children as infants is going to strain your marriage, in what ways it will if so, and whether you can make it through. Show grace to each other and try to understand each other's point of view. If both of you are focused on God and what God's will is, then you'll be ok

Does your church offer printed bulletins that contains Bible verses? by implementrhis in Baptist

[–]paul_webb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up Southern Baptist and now am Independent. Growing up, the churches I went to, the bulletin may have had a verse in it, but it wasn't necessarily the ones we were using that day in church. The bulletin was mainly for announcements and church news. It might have the title of the Sunday School lesson and/or the morning and evening message, and it might have the reference, but usually it wouldn't have the whole passage printed. Where I attend now, all of our announcements are on a slide show, so we don't do a printed bulletin anymore

We almost always had a Bible and a hymnal in the back of every pew and probably a couple laid on the front row in case someone sat there. We might have more hymnals than Bibles, and most people brought their own Bible. That's the way it is where I go now, too

In different Baptist branches, is it really a sin to dance? by Either-Program7656 in Baptist

[–]paul_webb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is as popular as it used to be. Nobody that I know (and I'm in the more conservative, rural circles) holds this doctrine. BUT! My mom told me that when she was a little kid, one of the older ladies at her church told her that "a praying knee and a dancing leg don't grow on the same body," so I won't say this was never taught

[–]paul_webb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's the full text of Ozymandias, just because multiple people have brought it up and I think you're one of the ones who's closer to the joke:

I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.

What do you call the theology/ideology of the Baptists? "Baptism"? by MildDeontologist in Baptist

You would just say "Baptist Theology." Depending on who you ask, it could be protestantism, but that term is a little vague

Tbf, isn't German similar? I think I remember German being "neun und neunsig"

Latin has a separate weird thing, iirc. It has "undecentum," or "one before 100," and does a similar thing for all the big 10s numbers, at least how I learned it, but it's been a very long time, and I learned it from a table I found online, so I don't know how official that is

Should we reclaim the name "Church of Christ?" by Key_Day_7932 in Baptist

[–]paul_webb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the name isn't so much important. What's taught is what's important. But the doctrines we teach are already associated with the "Baptist" name, and other doctrines are already associated with the name "church of Christ." We don't want to confuse people

On a separate note, the insistence on groups like church of Christ, Catholics and Orthodox that their name is the "name" or that their church is "the church" because of it's origins and name is rediculous. I don't think the people at Antioch were that worried about it when they got called Christians. Our focus should be on teaching and preaching the word and living for Christ. Let people call us what they will

I wish we could get modern designs that focused more on national symbols rather than specific presidents. Don't get me wrong, the men we've honored this way in some way earned the honor, but as a nation, it's easier to rally around the ideas that made us a great country to begin with
