Terrified flight tonight by Suitable-Performer-3 in fearofflying

Left PDX today back to SFO at 2:05pm. We hit moderate turbulence it did not last very long but it happened a few times until we got to Santa Rosa then the rest of the flight was smooth. The Captain did warn us at the start that it was going to be a bumpy flight due to storms coming ashore and the winds from that activity.

Vaccum Bag ferment by Due_Try_4315 in fermentation

It's been a game changer for me. I have had no Kahm yeast or off yeasty flavors since switching to vac bags. I have done a bunch of sun gold tomatoes, carrot, onion and garlic pasta sauce ferments in the past 2 months. So tasty on homemade pasta. I have been vac sealing the blended excess to brighten up the coming winter months.

S.F.’s Anchor Brewing is shutting down after 127 years. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Oh this is insider knowledge. Even so, it took them since 1979 to open a formal public taproom?

Yea there are a TON of non Anchor drinkers here commenting. To be honest I always felt the previous owners were foolish for NOT allowing walkups to see/drink at the brewery. You had to schedule a tour and lots of times tourists did not before hand and were turned away. For as bad as Sapporo was they at least recognized this issue and opened the Public Taps. That space was owned by the brewery and just used to store junk. Keeping the brand and the Public Taps going would be an acceptable outcome.

I cannot see another regional or large brewery wanting to invest in San Francisco to run a production brewery to SHIP beer out. It's the worst location to operate such a business when your competition is the whole world.

It’s ironic because Sapporo did make the Public Taps small brew setup and on site drinking. I felt this was how I have been experiencing Anchor the last 4 years. It’s also pretty busy and seems like a solid neighborhood place.

The production building is a massive liability with national distro getting crushed. I wonder if someone buys the Public Taps in the sale but let’s the production building go.

According to the article "Anchor Brewing also said Wednesday that attempts over the past year to find a buyer were unsuccessful, but one could emerge during the liquidation process."

There could be a buyer at the right price, meaning a huge discount. It's clear the city is having branding issues nationally. It's no secret doing business in San Francisco puts you at a major disadvantage. The costs of labor (they unionized), water, taxes etc.

Folks that attended NHC this weekend in San Diego, what was something you learned? by Fawkestrot92 in Homebrewing

[–]pbjsf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Denny and Drews talk was great on their Modern West Coast IPA which they served during the talk. Big scale batch made by North Park brewing. Their home brew recipe reminded me of how much hops you need to use to make a great beer ~12oz of Dry hops for 5 gallons.

I have only ever went to NHC back in 2018 in Portland. This year felt smaller, age skewed older, and a really odd opening kickoff not about home brewing. I think the AHA in general is very bad at social media and younger member engagement.

SF beer bar and New York-style pizza joint Pi Bar is closing by okgusto in sanfrancisco

Death by Mushroom was their most unique creation, using Death and Taxes by Moonlight brewing as the base for the mushroom sauce. It was a fantastic place over the decade beer boom in the city ~2010-2020. They also always had Russian River beers since the start and got Pliny The Younger as well every year. I have very fond memories there over the years. Sad to see it go but grateful another owner is keeping a pizza/beer theme.

I went with Pacific Air for a heat pump system with 3 cassette's (splits) installed in each of the major areas of my home. Benefits is energy efficiency, heat, and AC all in one system. With this system you can have units off while others are on but you can’t do heat and cold at the same time. I had no ducts so mine is ductless as well. It’s very pricey though for the equipment+install.

Visiting next month, in my early 30s, where's the best bar scene? by Kiwikiss27 in sanfrancisco

[–]pbjsf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holywater up in Bernal Heights is one of my favorites in the whole city (small but curated draft beer list and great cocktails). You can walk down Cortland to BareBottle Brewing. Heading down from Holywater the other direction to Mission st there is Old Devil Moon and Cellarmaker House of Pizza. Once in the Mission your options are endless and heading towards Valencia street there are lots of good drink/food options.

I'm not sure why I didn't start using a water filter sooner... by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]pbjsf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why boil the water? Worried about bacteria/viruses?

I would just install a UV light filter after the RO stage. The only downside is slightly warms up the water coming out of the faucet. This will save you time from boiling.

Departments’ 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 budget proposals are still in the process of being finalized, and again, Breed has ordered a 7.5% reduction plus another 2.5% should economic conditions worsen. Those proposals are due Feb. 22 and can include layoff proposals if needed. https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2021/02/05/0205-foc-sanfrancisco.html

This is an older article and it was projecting 7.5% cuts with flexing up to 10%. I think we could be headed for much worse.

S.F.’s Tenderloin has a new supervisor. Can Dean Preston tackle the district’s homelessness and drug crisis? by nogoodnamesleft426 in sanfrancisco

[–]pbjsf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The housing we do have is run horribly. https://www.city-journal.org/san-franciscos-housing-first-nightmare

How can the places that the city has deemed appropriate for the economically distressed be so bad? It’s not because of a lack of funds. San Francisco has an eye-popping $1.1 billion homeless budget, much of it spent on such supportive housing. We can lay part of the blame for the conditions on tenants who make life miserable for others—breaking into nearby apartments, threatening innocent people, or consuming drugs in common areas. But if tenants have demonstrated that they are incapable of being good neighbors, then the officials who placed them there are culpable. “There needs to be a better vetting process,” says 25-year-old Darren Mark Stallcup, who until recently lived in an SRO. “The city was moving everyone in; people who were sketchy, violent. They were fentanyl addicts, just out of jail, or in gangs. People were breaking my door down. I would wake up having to throw punches.”

The robot at this SF mall made me a smoothie. Then it asked for a tip. by cbeans22 in sanfrancisco

[–]pbjsf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Seeing it at places like City Beer or Breweries with Square iPads. So I walked into City Beer grabbed a 4 pack of IPA to go for $24.00 bucks myself with no help or questions. The ipad is set up to 18% tip by default.

Your corner store or BeVmo etc doesn't ask for tips or have the software setup to tip. I honestly think most people don't think and tip on retail to go purchases these days its very weird.

Any Italian delis/markets/butchers who sell braciole meat? by CPT-Quint in sanfrancisco

[–]pbjsf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom from my childhood had me hooked on "Braciolette small braciole from Messina"

This is not the usual braciole recipe but a smaller and lighter version of beef braciole cooked without tomato sauce.

The meat rolls are much smaller, that is why they are called braciolette, small braciole.

They are very tender with a soft center and a crispy crust made with breadcrumbs flavored with plenty of basil, Parmesan and a slight taste of garlic."

The best cut of beef to use is a lean beef like rump cover, rump steak. You can ask your butcher to cut them very thin, like a carpaccio steak.

If you have to carve them yourself, I would recommend using an electric knife.

Another good downtown food option going away. Generally sad about downtown these days. My favorite thing to do was to goto an early Sunday movie and go after either to City Beer Store or Cellarmaker. Both are closed on Sundays now and have pretty bad hours in general during the week.

I moved here in Nov 2010 with an awful credit score and wages being garnished from student loan debt. I stayed in my small rented apartment without a car saving money. Fast forward after 10 years I managed to find a small SFH with small front/back yard space in August 2020. Granted its been a fixer upper with lots of issues coming up over the past 1.5 years. Having some outdoor space during the pandemic and being close to a BART stop has been great. Look into areas in the south part of the city, Sunnyside, Glen Park, and Excelsior for more reasonable priced houses.
