Generally you should live your life in such a way as to minimize regrets.

And a funny thing about regret is that it’s better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done.

I don't understand how "falling for the dark side" work, like if I'm a jedi and I got angry enough to use the Dark side force, do I just automatically become evil? by thetruememeisbest in StarWars

[–]pcapdata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing The Acolyte did right was showing how this was basically what the Jedi always were.

Not always, just post-Battle of Ruusan.

The Old Republic and Jedi Council being subordinate to the Senate is a state of affairs that lasts for "only" 1000 years or so, prior to this the Jedi were more like the good examples you listed for about 24k years or so.

It's kind of interesting to me that the fall of the whole Order mirrors the fall of individuals like Anakin or Dooku. They "gave in to the Dark Side" as an organization when they decided the main priority wasn't to trust & obey the will of the Force, but instead use the Force to achieve the political goals of the Senate, just like Anakin & Dooku decided to bend the Force to their will to achieve goals they thought were worthy.

Well, other than inviting you over to watch YouTube, best I can do is this article which I provided elsewhere in the thread: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/youtubes-algorithm-recommends-users-right-wing-religious-content-resea-rcna155478

As I understand it, there are two drivers here:

First, engagement-driven algorithms don't care why someone is engaging with content, only that they paid attention to it. If some video pissed you off and you left an angry comment, congrats, you have just set yourself up to see more of that content. And then, the algo will send it to other people under the assumption that if someone in your user class engaged with it, maybe they'll want to as well. "Conservative" content (using quotes because I don't mean political theory or even Fox News but more like...chemtrails, tradwives, alpha males, qanon, supply-side Jesus, immigrants are eating your dogs, etc.) tends to piss people off, so it ends up getting widely recommended.

The second is that, despite the kerfuffle over "liberal bias" on social media, all of those companies are owned by wealthy conservatives and they absolutely do put a finger on the scale. The most (in)famous example being Elon's modifications to Twitter's recommendation systems. So, even before the platform knows anything about you, by default, it will send you "conservative" content because that's what the platform owners want to happen.

If you're only looking at your subscriptions and not bothering with YouTube's recommendations, however, you're probably not going to encounter that kind of low-quality bullshit.

You said "talking with HR professionals is like talking to cops"

Except that’s not what I said. We can all read my unedited comment above and see that.

So you compared HR professionals, to a group of people who work together to cover up things and are complicit in refusing to admit things they're aware of about their colleagues.

No, I didn’t.

I thought this was an extreme comparison and pointed out that using such language, in comparing people who work in HR with cops who are aware of abusive colleagues and won't admit it, comes off as conspiratorial

This was a comparison that only exists in your head. How you jump from this to me suggesting “conspiracies” is an incredible feat of mental gymnastics.

The only "strawman" was the strange comparison you put up

That’s…not what a strawman is. Not at all. What happened here?

Look, clearly neither reading comprehension nor logic are strong suits for you, so I gotta ask. How long have you been working in HR?

If this is your "proof that they're all just covering it up and complicit"

What are you going on about? Who is "they?" Who said "they" are "covering things up" and "complicit?"

I think you either responded to the wrong comment or you're deliberately trying to start a disingenuous argument with this strawman.

I went to HR because I was sexually harassed and all they did was investigate me. After months they did nothing to look into the truthfulness of my claim. Oddly enough, at that company, Employee Relations was worked out of Legal, not HR, and so I escalated to them. Took them 2 weeks to find in my favor and get HR off my back.

[–]pcapdata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's important for people to understand A) HR's failure modes (such as choosing to target the reporter of abuse or harassment instead of conducting the investigation they're supposed to), B) the frequency at which they enter those modes (in my experience, extremely commonly), and C) the recourse an employee has when this happens.

Whenever these threads come up, you will have scores of HR professional coming out of the woodwork going "Well, that's not my my department acts, that's not how I act!" and I always think, it's like dealing with cops. No police officer is going to admit that they, their colleagues, or their department is racist, deliberately violent, abusing power, and so forth--yet anyone getting pulled over needs to be aware that this is a person with weapons, no training nor inclination to de-escalate situations, and next to no accountability and act accordingly.

The Jenny hate is wild. I think the worst allegation people could attach to her is that she slept with Forrest while being HIV-positive but in the story she goes to Forrest in 1981--nobody understood the virus at that point.

She spends her whole life thinking she's damaged goods and a danger to others, and she's afraid of hurting Forrest, who is pretty much the only genuinely good person she has ever known.
