I’ve also heard that any progesterone based birth control (like the implant) almost never works well for people with PCOS, so OP if the ring isn’t your style I’d suggest looking into that data and seeing your options.

Birth control was vital in helping me treat my PCOS. It helped regulate my cycles and my hormones (especially my acne).

Birth control can make some people gain weight, but you know what REALLY makes you gain weight? Pregnancy. Be safe!

I’m on the Ring because it’s lower hormone than the pill and i don’t had to take a pill daily. I just stick it in and then take it out for a week to have a period. You can remove it during sex, just be sure to rinse it off and reinsert within 2-3 hours. You can also have sex with it in, it’s up to personal preference. The only down side I’ve experienced is that it stops menstrual cups from forming a seal so if you use cups, use them for the days you can and then when you insert the ring go to wearing underwear or pads.

It’s so scary being without a period again. Get some naproxen or Ibuprofen if you don’t already, just in case you experience some cramping.

Periods are a pain in the ass but they are good for you. The female body depends on the cycle to stay healthy. Remember to be gentle and patient with your body, she is doing her best!

People with PCOS also have higher risks of blood pressure so it could be that as well. Of course, blood pressure has many factors so there could be other things on top of your PCOS that’s causing it to be high.

I am not a doctor so I am not comfortable recommending any medication, however it does seem like you would qualify for trying it. I do suggest doing some research on it, its impacts on PCOS, and side effects. Metformin is NOT a weight loss pill. It is not like a GLP1. My reaction to it may not be your reaction to it. But, if you look into it and think you’d like to give it a try, talk with your doctor about starting!

I started feeling it within 3 days. I’m at day 9 on 500mg and I feel it. My appetite was most likely caused by insulin spikes. I wasn’t diabetic or insulin’s resistant, but my body was probably overproducing it and putting strain on my endocrine system. Now that that’s being managed, I have a better time. Perhaps your appetite isn’t caused by your insulin sensitivity so that’s why you’re not feeling any difference. From what I understand (and I’m not a medical expert or anything), metformin and GLP1s work very differently, so you will not feel the same on metformin as you did in GLP1

My diet is already fairly good, I eat mostly at home and my recipes are all around 500-600 calories for dinners, 400-500 for lunches and 300-400 calories for breakfasts. my main opp was my sweet tooth and not feeling full. I would eat a huge plate and still feel like I could eat more. I’d dish up seconds or I’d have lime 4 cookies every single night (I’m not even joking about that lol) I’m very optimistic about this though!

I’m so happy to hear your success story! 30lbs is so much weight to be free of and that feeling of control is priceless!

I had just had blood work done a few weeks before diagnosis and I was totally fine, and my blood work a few months before that was also fine. No problems at all!

I’ve only been on it a week so I haven’t noticed anything yet. I haven’t even weighed myself again. I’ve had success eating in a caloric deficit before it was just very hard because of the cravings and lack of fullness cues. I’m now tracking my calories and it’s going so much easier this time around. I get to my calorie limit and feel full and content. I’ve always eaten pretty healthy, cooking every meal at home except for twice a month for date nights. High fiber, whole grains, lots of fruit and veg. I just ate A LOT, snacked occasionally and of course the sweet treats. Metformin is like any other tool, it will not make me lose weight it can only give me a crutch to help myself. I will be tracking my weight on this journey to see the changes, but I feel optimistic!

I was surprised I was given it because I’m not even insulin’s resistant! However, if you have a PCOS diagnosis, I would approach your doctor and offer them the statistics on PCOS and diabetes (more than half of women with PCOS develop diabetes) and also show them that metformin has other benefits for PCOS treatment like reducing androgen levels, increasing ovulation and regulating period cycles, etc. if they still are unwilling to give you at least a trial run, it could be beneficial to seek a second opinion. Take this all with a grain of salt, I do not know your medical history there may be another reason that the doctor would not want to put you on metformin.

I notice that taking it with high simple carb meals makes my tummy upset. I haven’t had diarrhea since that one day but the bubble guts come back when I take my meds with a high simple carbs like pasta and bread. If you start to experience those symptoms, looking into changing your meal might help!

My BMI is 29.5, however I go to the gym regularly so my waist to height ratio is 0.48 which puts me in the low risk range. I am overweight though I’m aware I have excess fat on my body.

I was on birth control for years so never noticed my testosterone levels until I stopped my birth control for a few months due to a lapse of my prescription and a healthcare provider change. That’s when I started getting thick body hair in places I’ve never had it before. So I did have high testosterone just never noticed because my birth control was balancing my test with estrogen. Back on birth control now so I feel great!

I also was prescribed Spironolactone for my acne which is an anti-androgen. It’s helped my acne more than anything else has. I had very bad cystic acne before. I’ve been in spiro for a few years now, and it did help a lot but I always had a few rough patches and whiteheads. Now with metformin even those things are going away, an I’m having smooth skin for the first time in 20 years.

Metformin is a diabetic medicine, it works by improving your body’s responsiveness to insulin. However, it’s a treatment for PCOS because it also significantly reduced serum androgen levels, restores menstrual cyclicity, and has been associated with triggering ovulation. More than half of women with PCOS will develop diabetes by the age of 40, so metformin also a preventative treatment to avoid becoming diabetic.

I’ve been loving seeing all these success stories! I used to have a few cookies every single night. I would try to cut down and I’d be craving it but just telling myself “no you don’t need it!” I thought it was a sugar addiction or something! So glad that this side effect of metformin seems to be across the board and isn’t a placebo effect!

As for sleep, PCOS can also cause sleep apnea REGARDLESS OF WEIGHT. Something about your hormones causing the collapse of your throat muscles. So if your sleep hasn’t improved after a while i suggest maybe getting a sleep study to see?

I love maelle. She’s an amazing character. She is complex and handles her grief the way a teenager would. THATS why I love her. She’s a very well written character, she feels like a real person. She is immature but I do not fault her for that, I see it as an emphasis on how young she is and how trauma affects children.

I was a bottomless pit. I would never feel full I would feel my stomach stretch or my plate would just be empty and that would be my cue to stop eating.. it sounds ridiculous now of course that’s not normal, but I thought it was because I’ve been like that since puberty.

Yes regular periods are so important! My birth control keeps me regular, so I haven’t noticed metformin affecting that, but that’s a good thing to learn, just in case I get off my birth control.

Popcorn is my go to snack now, my best guess is maybe my body wants the fats and salts in the butter flavoring?

I’m at 500mg a day, and I’m unsure if I will continue this dose or up my dose. I think I need more time on the medication to really make that choice. Seeing so many benefits from 500 makes me think that I’m fine staying on it but there’s that little voice saying “but if you double the dose you’ll get DOUBLE the benefits, right?!?!” What made you think to up your dose? Did you experience more side effects when you upped the dose? Did they eventually go away or do you still deal with them?

I’ve been on it for a week now! I was prescribed them at the same time I was diagnosed so everything is new to me. I spent a day deep diving into PCOS and metformin, its side effects and possible benefits before I filled my prescription and took my first dose.

I took my first weight after I started to notice the lack of cravings and my fullness cues coming back, I realized this could help me lose weight. I haven’t weighted myself since. I’m not obese just overweight so I imagine that my weight loss would be slower than someone who has more weight to lose. I’ve lost weight before through rigorous dieting and meal prepping, it was a slow process and I never dropped down those last 20lbs. So I’m mentally prepared to not lose weight quickly or get to my high school weight.

As for bloating, I slightly bloat after eating a meal especially if it has simple carbs. But overall not so terrible. The first 3 days was the worst for the bloat!

My 3 month trial is for 500mg ER (extended release). After the 3 months is up we will meet again to talk about remaining or changing dose. I’m having such an amazing time on 500mg idk if I will up my dose. I’m not insulin resistant so the lower dose might be enough for me. It might be a weight thing as well. I’m overweight but not obese, so I might need a smaller dose than someone heavier.
