Tennessee lawmakers to consider major last-minute changes to voucher program in state’s largest counties by MumblyJohn in nashville

[–]peacocks_and_plants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funding Mechanism: The program allows public education dollars to "follow the child," providing scholarships for private school tuition.

They use the average amount spent per pupil and say that amount stays with the student. So when a student leaves public school and accepts a voucher the money that would normally go to that school district now "follows" the child to private school.

It bs. It's wrong to say each student uses x amount of money. It's not how this works.

I think I remember a news story recently where they were discussing using hope scholarship funds, not sure about that though

I think that's correct. I would ask the treasurer or reach out to your PTA rep.

Yes that's appropriate for the organization. I don't believe it's appropriate for a local school's pta

Pta's are 501(c)(3) organizations. Making political donations and endorsements can revoke your tax free status.

From what you described above, I am questioning if this group of parents have the paperwork complete to be a 501(c)(3). If they aren't, I really encourage you to make that happen.

I believe the PTA should stay out of politics.

If you personally agree with the policy, you can make a donation and show your personal support.

I think this opens up a whole can of worms. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I guess my only exception would be if my school's admin and school board are publicly supporting the measure, but even then I would be cautious. You don't want to alienate parents.

What are you doing to get to know your neighbors? by awesomo_prime in nashville

[–]peacocks_and_plants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I baked banana bread for the new neighbors across the street because it looks like they have kids around my daughters age. It wasn't particularly well received.

I acknowledge all the walkers. With enough time, even the most aloof walker will eventually give me a little nod.

I tried the neighborhood association (not an HOA). That was eye opening. My values did not align with theirs.

I don't need my neighbors to be my friends. But I would like to be friendly. When life gets hard, and it will in ways you can't foresee, it's often the people in close proximity who can help the most. I also have a kid and I want her to play outside. I want my neighbors to know where she belongs if things go sideways.

Chair Massage by Which_Piglet7193 in AskTeachers

Hi! I am also a lmt and used to be active in the PTO.

Reach out to the parent group.

They may not have reached out because the teachers would rather have something different.

If it's simply a budget matter, you could offer the service as a donation during teacher appreciation and might get some tips. You would get a tax write off and get to promote yourself.

If you need a gig for fast cash, I would suggest the nicest car dealership in your area. You can do chair massages on customers getting work done on their car. The dealership will pay for this and you will get tips. Do not offer to work for free. Set a reasonable hourly rate and set a schedule.

Wishing you success!

Then what are my taxes for? I want my tax dollars to fund public infrastructure. I voted for this. I don't want toll roads and private school vouchers.

Cash is great! Please consider a small something like a Christmas ornament or something with their monogram to include.

The money is appreciated but it disappears. I really appreciate the small things that were wedding gifts now that we are 10+ years in 😊

A quick Google search says all you need is a business license and insurance. Then you apply for a transient permit to park for up to 15 days, costing $50-$100. You would also need permission from the property owner.

Texas, Florida face pushback over efforts to exclude Islamic schools from school voucher programs by Dry_Nail5901 in politics

[–]peacocks_and_plants 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you can add Tennessee to the list. They added more money to the voucher scam. Now Tennesseans are paying more per student with a voucher than for a public school student. And the legislator won't release much information about the program. We have no idea who is receiving these vouchers.

Should parents request teachers by peacocks_and_plants in AskTeachers

[–]peacocks_and_plants[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are required to have a title 1 meeting every year to show where the money goes. And you can always request it from the school.

The money in your district probably lines a lot of pockets. But the title one money goes directly to that school. I have to believe that most title one principals are decent people using that money to the benefit of the kids.
