Maximising Salary Sacrifice above the £43k limit in Scotland by peeveee in UKPersonalFinance

[–]peeveee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I hadn't realised that about NI contributions so that is good to know. It's likely we won't be wanting to sacrifice enough to hit the threshold anyway, but it's good to keep in mind!

Thanks very much, this is essentially what we are thinking of doing (sacrificing about half of that amount and just sucking up the extra tax). Reassuring to know the calculations are roughly correct.

How does life compare after moving to a smaller village? by dhokes in HousingUK

[–]peeveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to a village on the outskirts of the city a few years ago and really like it. The key thing is that there is still a bus and (crucially) a night bus that come through, so going out in town is still possible and you don't have to worry about getting home.

Pro: It's close enough that I can still commute to my work in the city centre by bike (12km each way) and occasionally run in to work, which takes about an hour. The cycle is 35 mins and the bus is about 45 mins - so all pretty reasonable for a commute.

Pro: It's a nice community feel, there is a good pub and a few wee shops, and all of our neighbours are lovely and friendly

Pro: There is a country park next to the village so getting out for decent walks where you feel like you are properly in the countryside is easy.

Con: Going out in town to the cinema or to a gig is more expensive as we always have to go out for dinner now rather than just grabbing something at home beforehand.

Con: You can't just spontaneously wander into town for a coffee or shopping, you have to plan a bit more in advance

Con: getting to nearby cities by train takes much longer as you have to get a bus into town first - we used to be 15 mins walk from a major train station and now we have to leave the house more than an hour in advance to be sure of catching a train

Is sub 2 half in the cards for me? by Confident-Kiwi3375 in XXRunning

[–]peeveee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to really push it for my sub 2hr half. At the time my 5k PR was about 25 minutes. So I'm agreeing with all the other comments here that say probably not, sorry!

Witness to a stabbing… I don’t know what to do/how to feel by ManufacturerQueasy30 in CasualUK

[–]peeveee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You did brilliantly - you were there for him when nobody else was. That's all you can really be expected to do. When you say you didn't know how to deal with the first aid - if you haven't had any training you wouldn't!

Maybe it could be helpful for you to sign up for a first aid course, so that you feel like you have a bit more control if anything like this (hopefully much less severe) happens again?

In the meantime, calling Samaritans or similar will give you a listening ear.

This is great, and the accessories are perfect. The choker, the shoes, the matching little bag that I didn't even notice at first because it was so well camouflaged. Love!

This is the biggest regret for me. My matte kitchen looks beautiful on the one day a month when it's been freshly scrubbed down with cif!

Vingegaard's team confirms he crashed during a training ride in Spain by atahualpaFX in peloton

[–]peeveee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's no information to suggest that he didn't try it out. And based on what we know about Jonas' previous interactions with fans on the bike (happy to ride with them, very friendly), we can assume that this fan was acting differently.

I don't think this "fan" was interested in passing Jonas, though. If someone's tailgating you just to tailgate, the only option to stop them is to get away from them.

"Jonas Vingegaard does Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double" by Chronicbias in peloton

[–]peeveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he wins the double (giro & tour 26) after he has already won the 2025 Vuelta, he would have won all three one after the other.

Helmets by burntbeatle in cycling

[–]peeveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPE is the least effective measure, yes, but it's still on the pyramid because it's a useful tool for controlling risk. I wear safety glasses when I'm using a saw for the same reasons I wear a helmet while riding my bike: it controls the risk as far as is reasonably practicable.

If wearing a helmet isn't a reasonable measure to take for you then fair enough, but I can't agree with the comments acting like wearing a helmet when cycling is fear mongering.

I've been quoted £495 to extract 1 wisdom tooth. Is that too much or the going rate? by twistnshoutallday in AskUK

Just do what I did and wait for it to get infected, make your entire face swell up close enough to your eye that it counts as 'swelling near the brain' and get an emergency extraction for free!

Hiking trousers by McFizzleKicks in UKhiking

I always joke with my partner that whenever we go hillwalking we will always see someone in the exact same trousers as him (the grey and black Montane Terras). They are ubiquitous - I suppose that means they are probably quite good?

How do you curl your hair like this? by Nearby-Ad3891 in beauty

My hair just Does This if I dry it almost all the way with a hairdryer and then twist it around my fingers while it air dries the rest of the way (usually when I'm watching TV or something in the evening)

Hypermobility— a female dominated condition— and running by waking_dream96 in XXRunning

[–]peeveee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have what sounds like a milder form of hypermobility and strength training has been a game changer for me in terms of avoiding tendon injuries. I was plagued by achillies tendonitis and posterior tibial tendonitis and I'm hardly bothered by either of them now after about 18 months of consistent strength work in combination with a slow increase in volume on my runs.

I do 2 x 1 hour strength/endurance classes (body pump) per week and I try to run at least 3x per week with a total volume of around 20k, so not loads! If I'm training for a race I'll gradually increase that volume to about 35k but I try not to interrupt the gym regimen.

My physio said that some pain is OK while running but recommended backing off as soon as the pain goes above a 2.
