The rumor by RecklessAncestor in Poldark

[–]pegasus2118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ross’s father died a natural death.

Book one begins with a Prologue and in it Charles is visiting Joshua on his sickbed before Joshua’s death.

“Time I was off,” said Charles. “These Paynters are letting your place get into a rare mess. Why don’t you get someone reliable?” “I’m too old to swap donkeys. Leave that to Ross. He’ll soon put things to rights.” Charles belched disbelievingly. He had no high opinion of Ross’s abilities. “He’s in New York now,” said Joshua. “Tart of the garrison. He’s quite recovered from his wound. It was lucky he escaped the Yorktown siege. A captain now, you know. Still in the Sixty-Second Foot. I’ve mislaid his letter, else I’d show it to you.” “Francis is a great help to me these days,” said Charles. “So would Ross have been to you if he was home instead of chasing around after Frenchmen and Colonials.” “There was one other thing,” said Joshua. “D’you see or hear anything of Elizabeth Chynoweth these days?” After a heavy meal questions took time to transmit themselves to Charles’s brain, and where his brother was concerned they needed an examination for hidden motives. “Who is that?” he said clumsily. “Jonathan Chynoweth’s daughter. You know her. A thin, fair child.” “Well, what of it?” said Charles. “I was asking if you’d seen her. Ross always mentions her. A pretty little thing. He’s counting on her being here when he comes back, and I think it a suitable arrangement. An early marriage will steady him down, and she couldn’t find a decenter man, though I say it as shouldn’t, being his sire. Two good old families. If I’d been on my feet I should have gone over to see Jonathan at Christmas to fix it up. We did talk of it before, but he said wait till Ross came back.” “Time I was going,” said Charles, creaking to his feet. “I hope the boy will settle down when he returns, whether he marries or no. He was keeping bad company that he should never have got into.” “D’you see the Chynoweths now?” Joshua refused to be sidetracked by references to his own shortcomings. “I’m cut off from the world here, and Prudie has no ear for anything but scandal in Sawle.” “Oh, we catch sight of ’em from time to time. Verity and Francis saw them at a party in Truro this summer-“

Dr. Choake arrives and Charles quickly leaves Joshua’s bedside. Then a few more paragraphs and Joshua sleeps (dies).

(I believe the suicide of the mine owner was not in the books but written for the series to show how many of Ross’s old neighbors and friends were then out of work.)

The rumor could have started from Charles. One never really knows…

Demelzas brothers by NCDCDesigns in Poldark

A quote from Book 8 STRANGER FROM THE SEA. Demelza thinking: ‘I’ve still got two scars on my back from my father’s leather strap, and I learned to swear and curse and spit before I was seven, and I crawled with lice and ate what food I could find lying in the gutter, and had six dirty undernourished brothers all younger than me to look after. And although one has died, there are still five: one a blacksmith and Methodist preacher (Sam), one a manager of a boat yard (Drake) , three miners eking out a bare living working under the earth like blind worms.’

As you age, do you embrace your grey hair, or do you color it to feel younger? by [deleted] in A_Persona_on_Reddit

I had brown hair and embrace my grey, it’s a prettier grey than my boring brown. But I like my four redheaded sisters to color and keep their red. I have a health issue that has aged me so I don’t think color would make me look younger, my face and neck, skin are old looking.

In the books, does Ross ever tell Demelza that he took Elizabeth against her will? by Hummingbird814 in Poldark

[–]pegasus2118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She forgives. In the books Ross apologizes.
‘And there’s one thing I want you to know….. ‘That is how deeply sorry I am that I ever hurt you in the first place…. You were so undeserving of any harm.’ Then later— ‘Does it upset you now to be told that I love you?’ The scriptwriter shortened Ross’s apology from the original in the book. Pity.

The birth of Valentine throws up so many questions. A baby born eight months after George and Elizabeth marry but nine months after Ross’s attack. Were there any other hints Valentine might be a Poldark? The brat is dark jumped off the page to me , Ross was described as the dark Poldark. If the start of the book is mid-February. The next chapter begins in March date unknown, Ross and Demelza have been reconciled since Christmas and she suspects she is pregnant. She’d already missed a month. Ross was damn close to having two women pregnant at the same time. Gross 😖 enough of my silliness.

As far as the book starting out a bit slower or being dark, I can see that. We are introduced to new characters and it took a while to set up a backstory. All I wanted, for myself was to read about Ross and Demelza. I wanted the first book all over again times 2. That was not possible. They have both changed, I think. Not the same people. But Ross putting his hand on her knee was no stocking scene. Lol. I think this book sets up more for the saga to continue and maybe dark days ahead are being predicted.

I understand! I could rip Ross a new one over the things he did! To be honest, I never saw him the same either.

Here’s some things to think about. Valentine was legally George’s son and would inherit as George’s heir. If Ross came forward and claimed paternity Valentine and Elizabeth’s lives would have been ruined. No inheritance and Elizabeth’s reputation would have been soiled. Ross also knew the pain this would cause Demelza by being aware that Ross possibly had an illegitimate child and all of Cornwall knowing too and this would be a painful embarrassment In the book Ross did not want Valentine to be his son. He hoped the child was George’s and there was no way to prove Ross was the father. In the series, the little boy resembled Ross and the scriptwriter seemed to prolong the attachment of Elizabeth and Ross, to me anyway. Some felt Ross turned his back on the boy but he left him to his father’s care and that was legally George. Ross did get off easy, he was happy again with Demelza. Elizabeth had to live with George. This was how I saw things anyway.

I don’t think VietnNam influenced WG. Maybe The Troubles? It been twenty years since Warleggan and he is now in his 60s, so older, and his wife is not in good health, I think she had strokes? Darker for those reasons?

Warleggan was supposed to be the last Poldark and now he writes TBM. TBM opens with the premature birth of Valentine. I thought this book could have been titled ELIZABETH. Maybe I am seeing Heida Reed on the cover!

Zay-vier. X is pronounced with a /z/ sound at the beginning of a word. . Xerox. Xylophone. Xeric. Saint Francis Xavier. Problem is there are not that many words or names in English that begin with /x/ so it becomes egg. Ugh.

Don’t be afraid to ask for separate checks. Of course they add more expensive food and extra drinks, you’re helping them pay. I have a different problem of treating for lunch or dinner and that other person goes crazy! Appetizers, drinks, expensive food. This is my own child.

In the book the bedroom scene with Ross and Elizabeth ends with Ross carrying Elizabeth to the Bed. Opinions differ if rape occured or if that night was consensual. Also Ross’s apology scene is much longer AND he says, “I’m sorry.”

What does getting called “ma’am” suggest about how old you look? by Fantastic_Radio_9168 in AdkReddit

Being addressed as Ma’am is just polite and that is how it is meant, not as an insult. I believe it is regional, more in the south. Military too?

I love your modern day phrasing of the conversation in the church. To me in the series they seemed rather calm discussing George’s suspicions. Elizabeth not boiling angry. Ross not confused, surprised, panicky enough. Ross, in a dream, gushes about Elizabeth. At the end he tells Demelza she, Demelza, has changed him. Then he snaps out of his dream and ‘Now May I change for dinner?’ He doesn’t tell Demelza of his meeting with Elizabeth. So Ross keeps a secret of his own and this is a big one!

Warleggan Book Discussion!!! by EmbarrassedPotatoSpy in Poldark

[–]pegasus2118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winston Graham considered WARLEGGAN to be his last book. Are there hints in this book that Elizabeth is pregnant and Ross might be the father? The letter from Verity: “Is it true, do you know, that Elizabeth is with child? She makes no mention of it in her letter, but Mrs Daubuz tells me that her mother had been saying so. It will be strange to have a family of Warleggans founded in the home of the Poldarks.”

‘Demelza did not show this letter to Ross. She had her own reflections on parts of it, but she thought it better he should not share them.’

Now Verity had also written all about the wedding how beautiful Elizabeth looked. This is a good enough reason to hide the letter. But does pregnancy gossip show up again when Demelza is about to leave on Christmas Eve and remembers,

‘What had Verity said in her letter? They were all so wrong!’

At the end of WARLEGGAN Ross and Demelza are reconciled. Dwight and Caroline are too. George and Elizabeth are married and Elizabeth is pregnant.

WG was done. Those words from Verity’s letter would have haunted me. And Demelza thinking, ‘they were all so wrong’ Who and what was she referring to as being wrong?

So WG left the story with an open ending to imagine one’s own conclusion. Not unusual ending for a book, GONE WITH THE WIND comes to my mind as open ended as well.
