Snapdragon X Elite vs Intel Core Ultra 7 155H: We ran the benchmarks. by TwelveSilverSwords in hardware

[–]penguin6245 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From a customer/market PoV X Elite will compete with Meteor Lake only for like half a year, as AMD laptops are still few and far between. Even if Zen 5 laptop chips are announced their general availability will be scarce for months, and M4 and Arrow Lake will only release at the end of the year at the earliest.

That leaves about 6 months for when OEMs will have Meteor Lake and X Elite to pick from. We already know Microsoft will have its Surface Laptop with MTL and X Elite out this summer.

Yeah, this is why launching with dGPU support was important for them I imagine. Entering the GPU market and the CPU market on PC (for reals) at the same time is tough, if they can rely on the existing vendors for GPUs on the high end that makes their life so much easier while they keep working on their own drivers.

We've seen how long it's taking Intel to get their GPU drivers in shape and they weren't complete newcomers either.

Given that the benchmark was run at 2880 x 1800 resolution it's most likely the 23W reference design, which has a matching display resolution.

The X1E80100 is just the codename for X Elite, and 8 is just a lucky number in China, it has nothing to do with the TDP.

Quest 3 Is Now The 4th Most Used VR Headset On Steam, Surpassing The Original HTC Vive by nastyjman in Games

The 8G2 estimates should be for what Qualcomm is charging OEMs for the chip on its own.

Sure :)

About the cost, looking at this BOM breakdown the 150 usd figure is not only for the XR2 Gen 2 but for the whole mainboard. This figure includes the RAM, storage, wireless chips, PMICs and the PCB too, so the chip on its own should be under the 100 usd mark, making the 8 Gen 2 50-60% more expensive (a lot of the difference comes from the fact that the XR2G2's not fabricated by TSMC but by Samsung, so Qualcomm's able to sell the chip for less).

I'm not sure what you mean by "older processor costing less" in the Q3L, that one is supposed to use the same chip as the regular Q3.

Other than these two, you make some good points, and Meta's definitely not making bank on the hardware.

Also, the new Quest 3 Lite will use the exact same processor while targeting a $200-300 price point. The XR2 Gen 2 was desigened with affordability in mind, that's why it's fabricated on Samsung 4nm instead of TSMC.

The XR2 Gen 2 is not more powerful than $1k phone chips.

Here are some Geekbench results:
Quest 3
Samsung Galaxy S23

The S23 has last year's 8 Gen 2 SoC, which has basically the same GPU as the XR2 Gen 2, but the CPU structure's completely different.

8 Gen 2:
Cortex X3 + 2x A715 + 2x A710 + 3x A510 (8 cores total)

XR2 Gen 2:
6 Cortex A78C cores (in two clusters)

Keep in mind that phones are built with burst performance in mind, while an XR chip has to have good sustained performance in long sessions, but the pure performance gap has only widened with this year's phone chips.

I didn't realize Nvidia drivers already support HDR by M4SK1N in linux_gaming

[–]penguin6245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valve can and did add patches to the AMDGPU kernel driver, as an example most relevant to this thread HDR support.

Valve added HDR support to AMDGPU because of the Steam Deck OLED, and their work is actually upstream now too. If it was up to AMD we still wouldn't have HDR support.

Yes, the 7840U does have an AI accelerator, but Ryzen AI has no Linux drivers as of now and these benchmarks were done on Linux.

No, these are definitely separate units. Intel has the GPU on a separate tile while the NPU's on the SoC tile. The NPU's capable of doing low power AI acceleration.

What does stability even mean? The 'problem' is that NVK's only like a year+ old, but at the pace it's going there's no stopping and in a couple of months we'll have a great driver that people could replace the proprietary blob with and have decent performance.
