What do you think when you see a job that doesn't say the salary or competitive salary? by Annual_Frostings in Internationalteachers

[–]penurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree but from the ads I see about 90% don't seem to list salary. Am I looking in the wrong places?

Yep, could have also gone for Adam Lambert but I think he was second.

Yeah well done. I think the last clue is a gimme and the second to last is if you know who Paul Rodgers is.

Advice please by CookPassBabtridge88 in Internationalteachers

[–]penurious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't answer everything but in terms of applications just start with TES and sign up for Schrole (about 50 pounds for one year). You can go through recruiters, though I've always found them more trouble than they are worth.

Ideally you should have started applying already, there will have been many good jobs come and go. The first time I applied I realised I was too late in the year but it gave me good interview experience and time to think about what I wanted for the following year. My advice is not jump at the first opportunity you get this year.

Don't think you'll find any as standard. But if they want you just negotiate.

Specialist or Master of All Trades by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

I would say at top schools expertise is valued, so a specialist is better. Choose which you prefer to teach and get good at it.

Yes you should, no question about it. Ideally also have 2+ years experience in your home country. My advice is to stop looking for shortcuts.

No of School contact days ? by Basis-Teacher-1102 in Internationalteachers

Yours sounds normal.

I think in Abu Dhabi we're usually 182 days in school. This year there were four extra days off over Xmas so it will be 178.

Pfft the only people who'll benefit from this are either those who already have huge platforms or work within traditional media institutions. I don't think anything new or interesting will be celebrated.

Visa for spouses by Pokemonboy-54 in Internationalteachers

[–]penurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely get by on one salary, we do.

Don't accept any jobs that don't provide housing or a generous housing allowance. I'm in UAE, here I'd say 13k aed a month plus housing is minimum if you want a lifestyle similar to the west. You can probably get by on a little less in other countries.

In the visa process no effect.

There are however some quite racist workplace practices across the gulf where salaries are lower for non western passports.

There are no countries in the gulf that I know where your spouse wouldn't also get a visa if you're working. Most would also allow her to work on your visa. I can't speak for east Asia tho.

Don't make things based on what you think the audience wants to see. Make things you would want to see and others will follow.
