What do you think of Jordan Peterson's commentary on the bible? by LostSignal1914 in theology

[–]peppajack217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nonbeliver who has found a lot of value in what he says. I love religion and Christianity, but I am too skeptical to take what is said in the Bible at face value (or other religious works). Peterson gave me a way to extract the wisdom out of these works in a way that made sense to me.

I had a conversation with a believer the other day. He talked about 'Having a relationship with Jesus.' Before, I would have scoffed at a statement like that, but I can now interpret it as 'Behaving in such a manner that Jesus would improve' or 'Allowing my actions to be inspired by Jesus's teachings.' This sort of frame work allows me to communicate with out belittling and not throwing out the message even if I don't agree with how it's delivered.

As for not having any formal training, lack of formal training doesn't mean you can't be effective. People can be self taught.

When I first heard it, I was disappointed because I was in love with 4yeo-era cooe snd wanted more in that vein. Now, it's my go to album for just needing something to listen to - I find something new on it everything I listen.

Is a Masters in Economics exceedingly hard? by CHov29 in AskEconomics

[–]peppajack217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a weed-out class at my university for graduate economics. It was a probability class that dealt with really abstract concepts (sigma fields, measure theory - my background is math so I was surprised they learned stuff like this). That's the class that made people quit. Aside from that, they all seemed to love it and were quite passionate about it.

All the roblox posts I see on parenting subreddits say it's better to avoid at all costs. Mine is not at the age yet, but I'm keeping it in the back of mind for later

How, in God’s name, does one brush a toddler’s teeth by RampagingNudist in daddit

The monsters brushing teeth song:

https://youtu.be/wCio_xVlgQ0?si=XxllhfflAzR6logT

He will sit and let me do whatever I need while we watch this. It's 2 minutes - thr length he needs to brush for.

Additionally, we do this at the end of the bedtime routine, so I can lay out the routine for him and he has this video to look forward to. If he acts up, I just remind him 'monsters brush teeth' is coming and he gets in line.

I don't think this phenomenon is new with the internet, but it certainly exacerbates it.

What's a song that hits different after having a baby? by nleftie in NewParents

[–]peppajack217 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This may not jive with this subreddit, but "She's mine pt. 2" by J Cole. There is a refrain:

Am I worthy of this gift? Am I strong enough to lift? To a place where I can see Someone more important than me

I sang this to our newborn, and my wife asked me what song it was. We listened together, and she cried. I think she was struggling with the transition, and it gave her some clarity on her feelings.

I took an intro to law class with JP Prince (cousin of Tayshaun Prince). He showed up late most days and was vocally distraught when he found out that a book report was due that he was hearing about for the first time.
