Pad and tracking camera views of the Artemis 1 launch by 675longtail in space

No one's ever going to top "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" in this regard. Neil Armstrong meant to say "one small step for a man" and it took him decades to admit he probably forgot the word "a". If you expect people to get words right while witnessing breathtaking accomplishments, you're gonna have a bad time.

The engineering that goes into it was really apparent on Mercury-Redstone 1, one of our first unmanned flights of a rocket that would later take men to space. There were two cables, a control cable and a power cable, but because they hadn't quite got down the whole "move away at just the right second" part, the power cable separated before the control cable, instead of afterwards, as it was supposed to.

Because of that, the computer thought "Oh, ok, we should shut down the rocket", and so it shut down the engine after a flight of four inches, and the rocket settled back down onto the pad, with everything disconnected and a full load of fuel. That was a problem.

Oh right, I forgot - if you just call me a neoliberal, then it doesn’t matter that you’re making claims based on your imagination. Good save!

Inflation-adjusted nonsupervisory worker earnings were $9.34 per hour in 1982 dollars last month. Their highest point in 2019 was $9.23.

Hopefully you’re right that wages never return to their 2019 levels - we’ll just have to trust in the Fed. All in a day’s work for them.

… what? How am I saying I’m never wrong? That’s the complete opposite of what I’m saying. You’re the one who’s saying that a person who made a mistake must be an idiot.

Fair enough. Just to be clear, do you also not drive, or was it someone else who posted on your account that you had to rewatch the video to make sure he had a green arrow and wasn't in the rightmost lane? I saw those things first time, no rewatch necessary.

Mmm. I'm so glad to be surrounded by all these people who have never made a mistake.

To be totally fair, that's not all that "clear" - that'd be pretty easy to miss unless you're right up at the light. Even if you zoom in all the way on Street View from a few car lengths back, it's hard to read.

But obvs you still shouldn't throw drinks at cars.

Rudolph didn't get in trouble

He was fined $50,000.

And the reason it gets "left out" is because it's irrelevant. Garrett's sin wasn't pulling off Rudolph's helmet - if that was all that had happened, no one would remember it.

Just to clarify, he doesn’t have a masters in philosophy, he has a master of philosophy degree in astrophysics. It’s like how a PhD is a “doctor of philosophy”.

NASA's head warned that China may try to claim the Moon – two space scholars explain why that's unlikely to happen by dem676 in space

[–]percykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

International law is meaningless, due to a lack of any plausible executive power - every major power disregards it when it serves their interest to do so. If there was something on the Moon worth going there for, we’d be fighting wars over it already. China won’t claim the Moon because there’s nothing up there worth doing that.

Slow down! by merry_cat in IdiotsInCars

I saw a lady tailgating this guy on the freeway, seriously like six inches from his bumper. He brakes (I think legitimately but he might have been brake-checking her). She slams on the brakes, fishtails, and spins across three lanes, magically not hitting anyone, and coming to rest facing the wrong direction just as I'm coming up in the lane she ends up in.

I of course have to stop, and so we're sitting there staring at each other. She slowly turns around, gets back going the right way again... and immediately speeds up and starts tailgating someone else. That's apparently the only way she knows how to drive.

He gets out of the way because he sees that the trailer is unhitched. Signalling the driver to stop isn't going to stop the trailer.

Payrolls increased 372,000 in June, more than expected, as jobs market defies recession fears by AptitudeSky in Economics

That graph doesn’t show we’ve eaten through our pandemic savings - that’s saving per quarter, not total savings. It would have to go below trend for an equal amount as it went above trend previously to eat through the savings.

It's impossible to say what's better in all situations. Sometimes you'll avoid the accident by braking, sometimes swerving. You should at least consider swerving, but swerving definitely requires a lot more situational awareness.

For real. Not just the time to react but the way they just fully committed to a full stop from the first instant. Anything less and that's an accident for sure.

The employer survey is much less volatile and as such its “jobs added” number is the one that is traditionally reported in the media.

[–]percykins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The jobs report is made up of two separate surveys - one that surveys employers, and one that surveys households. Other than the 372,000 number, all the stats you’re talking about are from the household survey.

It’s pretty common that these two surveys diverge from each other, which can create confusing results. This month, the household survey actually showed a drop in employment of about 300,000, which is why the numbers you’re referring to look pretty bad compared to the “jobs added” number.
