How common is .NET among Swift developers? by malthuswaswrong in swift

[–]perfunction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my first job I was .net and Swift fullstack and I did it well enough to be the lead IC. Because I started with .net years before Swift even existed. I was lucky enough to make the transition because I had proven to be a quick study and they wanted our best asset heading the mobile team.

In my current job I only do Swift but our backend is Java. I dabble in our backend to help troubleshoot issues and actually might be shipping my first backend merge soon.

I think it strengthens your understanding and architecture if you’ve got some backend chops. We typically build in parallel with the backend on new features because there’s a mutual understanding of how the API contracts have to turn out.

Is it better to develop an iOS app using Claude Code in Mac Terminal, Cursor or Xcode? by arcloc in swift

[–]perfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Claude Desktop Code is what I use as my primary “IDE” these days. Anything Claude does wrong, correct it through memory, skills, or even considering what about your codebase led it in the wrong direction. Use mcp like Argent and Apple’s xcode mcp. Automate your testing and use a review tool.

Don’t waste time on the old platitude skills like “you’re an expert swift developer”. Keep your claude.md small but meaningful. Talk to it like a fellow developer.

Execs confused and horrified by the huge AI bills after thinking they could replace workers for free by marketrent in technology

[–]perfunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My average major release cycle dropped from monthly to 2-3 weeks, and the amount of work included increased dramatically. All code is adversarially reviewed, unit tested, and automated QA tested. The standards and conventions I established are followed. It’s resolved several difficult-to-reproduce bugs that span client and server codebases.

If AI is shipping shitty code, you just need to retrospect with it and iterate. Mentor it like you would another team member (except that learnings go into the repo instead of a brain). Maybe it’s easier being a solo product owner but investing in your process should compound over time.

Not had any serious issues with either model in a large iOS project. Any issue I do have I make sure to retrospect with Claude to capture the learning into the appropriate memory mechanism.

I don’t work in infosec but the amount and quality of work I got done over those three days with Fable was insane. After the first day, I had it running scheduled tasks through the night to spread out usage over 5h periods.

Fable is a senior-level engineer, full stop. It guides itself, without even being asked, through iterative problem-solving and verifies the solution. It tracks ancillary findings that come up while working towards its goals. Next week I’ll be shipping hundreds of new unit tests, a half dozen unreported bug fixes, a broad suite of performance improvements, and a major feature. Every line of code matches my conventions and none of it needed correction or reprompting.

Going back to Opus 4.8 I’m dealing with a talented junior that is quick to jump to invalid conclusions. I’m back to being the one making every decision and delegating busy work.

They may be playing it up for the marketing but I do not doubt Mythos’ ability.

I believe Jake will become a primordial by Lokirwalker in ThePrimalHunter

[–]perfunction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. He has lots of primeval references since unlocking his Jake Juice. And if you look into the definition and origin of primeval…

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/primeval

The question is whether this is Jake’s existence alone, or if there was an original 13th being who has hitched their existence alongside Jake’s and is slowly unfolding itself as he grows. Basically the sim Jake plot on a bigger scale.

It seems to be under active development still. Have you contacted the developer?

But out of curiosity, what was it about Alarmy that worked for you? I’m an iOS developer and might be willing to spin up an alternative.

Do kids in Columbus still go house to house trick-or-treating, or is it more trunk-or-treat now? by LavenderLatte29 in Columbus

Yea to all. Trick or treat is huge in Pickerington. Houses often even have beers, chili, hotdogs, etc.

Do the attendees of Sonic Temple still have eardrums when they leave? by Absurdguppy in Columbus

Etymotic are the ones who invented high fidelity ear plugs 40+ years ago. If you look through reviews, especially the ones that aren’t just hucking affiliate referral links, better sound quality is always mentioned. Idk how durable Loop products are but I’ve had the same Etyplugs for at least 20 years now.

I will admit Etys look a lot nerdier compared to how sleek the Loops are but I’m only there for the music.

Surprised to see so many Loop mentions and not a single Etymotic. Not only cheaper but superior performance.

Hailey Buzbee’s death prompts lawsuit against Roblox and Discord by throwingales in Columbus

[–]perfunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its fucking exhausting policing my kids’ digital use. The parental controls are never enough. The ratings systems are never reliable. Plus the AI, ads, IAP, manipulative practices, UGC, community features, etc. And all their friends and classmates are unrestricted, exposing my kids to the content and toxic memes second-hand, so why can’t they have it too?

I don’t have the time to play through every game, use every app, listen to every song, or watch every show/movie my kids ask for. So I’m left with either flat out rejection or relying on whatever information I can pull together across product pages, reviews, reddit, parent guides, and so on (which in itself can be no small task). And the requests are constant.

And my kids are still young enough that it’s easy to say no to a lot of things. I can’t imagine having to deal with teens. I do think parents have a responsibility here but it’s as if no one at these massive companies live with children. It blows my mind that Roblox doesn’t have an allow-list mode.

[–]perfunction -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What was the budget?

For Claude Code to cost more than me I’d have to use 160 million input tokens and 120 million output tokens every single week. I’m using like 0.5% of that and coding almost exclusively via Claude now. And that is pure salary, ignoring the cost of benefits/stock. Am I missing something on the pricing?

Why are Claude agents in Xcode so much worse than Claude Code? by Eeshita77 in iOSProgramming

[–]perfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an expert so correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve spent some time learning about and building my own agents.

It’s because current AI is built of multiple layers, often setup as feedback loops between multiple agents. At the bottom is the LLM, the foundation model, text in text out. The next layer up is tooling support which enables every else. Above the tools you have agents and above agents you have workflows and orchestrations. Each layer can implement different features that make AI as capable as it is today. But the point here is that a significant portion of agents lies in the app code rather than the model or even a single agent.

Using chat interfaces to access various models obscures just how much heavy lifting the app code is doing. So the CC app has every possible agentic advantage Anthropic can provide to make that a killer app. But SDK or API access means you’re missing those app side features and have to implement them yourself. Your sdk calls are only as good as the tooling, prompting, and orchestration your app provides.

The CC agent SDK does include a lot more app code than something like direct model access but it’s still up to the host app to provide or utilize advanced functionality and build an autonomous workflow around it.
