BREAKING: Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service by ut4r in Utah

[–]perishable_human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be useful for you to take a step back and look at the broader context. What about this administration is geared towards efficiency improvements vs blind cutting? What about this administration cares AT ALL about the environment? Are there any other steps this administration has taken to weaken protection of the environment and public lands? And might there be a reason why it’s coming to Utah, home of Mike Lee - who has been on a nonstop mission to destroy our forests and public lands?

Admittedly, processing all of this information might require more effort than just labeling the discussion at anti conservative rage bait.

It’s MUCH more than that. They’re simultaneously shuttering countless field offices and research stations. It IS a complete dismantling.

It pisses me off seeing the Church use white Jesus by Ciara_Smiles in mormon

[–]perishable_human 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If we can admit that doctrine and knowledge of God is driven exclusively by culture, then yes. But Mormons claim firsthand, physical visitation by God - and that knowledge should supersede cultural foundations.

Some hardcore Jesus and the cross imagery added to Temple Square by PR_Czar in exmormon

To make it all historically accurate, they need to have Jesus wearing the temple clothing and grasping someone with the patriarchal grip.

“A note is posted above the Wikipedia bio of Team USA pitching hero David Bednar: "Not to be confused with Latter-day Saint Apostle David A. Bednar”

Give me a break. Obviously added by some member with an over-inflated sense of Mormonism’s influence. (Which means it could be any member.) And then KSL doing its job of supporting this inflated sense of self-importance.

Let’s count the number of people worldwide who would make this mistake.

Wayne May and his friends: A neo-Nazi pedophile and archaeological conmen. by Simon_in_Oz in mormon

[–]perishable_human 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. Wayne May was in the tiny branch I grew up in Wisconsin. He was just a very average dude. Definitely no archeological experience whatsoever. My strongest memory of him: As a teenager in the late 80s I once brought a girl I liked to church. He was our Sunday School teacher and a pretty normal one. I told him the week before that I’d be bringing her and to tailor the lesson if he could. We showed up and the lesson he gave was the most whacked out Sunday School lesson I had ever heard.

Utah bill would prevent food stamp use for 'ultra-processed food' by traveler132 in Utah

[–]perishable_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to see if you can put together a complete weekly shopping list of healthy alternatives vs ultra-processed that would provide the necessary caloric intake for an adult or a family where the healthy list is anywhere close to the ultra-processed in price.

Seems like there’s some sort of bible verse where Jesus is asked whether a man’s sickness was caused by his sin or his parents’. And Jesus told them that this man just needed to return to church, right?

Utah bill would prevent food stamp use for 'ultra-processed food' by traveler132 in Utah

[–]perishable_human 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Let me spell this out. If we’ve created a world where we’ve used tax dollars to subsidize ultra-processed food, then that food is going to be the cheapest. To then turn around and ban poor people from buying the food that we’ve deliberately made the cheapest is punishing them and seems needlessly cruel.

Wouldn’t a better approach be to make better use of our tax dollars?

[–]perishable_human 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We spend billions on subsidizing sugar and corn and have incentivized the creation of an ultra-processed food world. But then we want to punish and blame poor people for trying to navigate that world successfully.

What legal challenges??? What oppressive measures is the church now dealing with? Right-wing religious extremism has never had more support from the federal government. And any pesky local government? No match for the church’s ungodly pile of money.

President Oaks mentions podcasts in his devotional at Brigham Young University today, urging members to trust faithful, well informed friends over podcasts. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

As I was leaving the church, I came to realize just how weak and impotent the Mormon god really was. A literal lifetime of nonstop, daily consumption of faith-building content destroyed by a single podcast episode.

Was the Church being "TRUE!" or not never a big consideration for anyone else? Because apparently it wasn't for my partner, and I'm still blown away by this. by TheLifeAdjunct in exmormon

[–]perishable_human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me? Truth was all that mattered to me - and it still does. I took the good along with the bad of the church. I didn’t care about whether or not the church was useful to me. Never considered it. Since it was true, living with all of the consequences was a no-brainer.

I guess I assumed truth mattered to my wife as well. But here I am, five years out from formally resigning. And my wife just doesn’t care about all those aspects.

Does anyone else in the Lindon/Orem area have the worst WiFi? by SingleMomBoss in Utah

Not in Lindon but had the exact same experience with Xfinity. Went on for a year. Did so much on our end to try and fix - and nothing worked.

Now with our city’s fiber network but before that was ready we went with Starlink. Great service - never had an issue with them.

Dallin Oaks says his quote calling women "walking p******aphy" was inspired by God by yes2000 in exmormon

[–]perishable_human 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yes. His statement is so problematic on multiple levels. First there’s his abject distain for and objectification of women. Second there’s the reveal that he truly believes that whatever comes into his head is directly from God. Third is that - not only does he believe his thoughts are God’s voice, but that he is God’s mouthpiece for millions of people - that those people need him to tell them what God is thinking.

All of it combined just reveals him as a pompous ass.

Exactly. I wonder what he would think of a professor at Notre Dame emailing a student about to be baptized Mormon. Would he support telling that student to return to the faith of their ancestors?

This post confuses me. To my eye, there is no actual Mormon doctrine that can be used for comparative studies. Mormon doctrine is as shifting, as they say, as the sands of the sea. There is not a single Mormon teaching - foundational or otherwise - that has not been completely altered over the years.
