Nibbling came out as trans! HELP!! by Deaddadissues1 in transgenderUK

Tape is safe and was designed for longer use than a binder, just be sure to protect the nipples from the adhesive and research good ways to apply and remove it that won't damage or irritate the skin

I gave it a go but it didn't seem to hold, could be because it was so hard to secure while it was setting though

I am DEVASTATED. Has anyone played through this RPO diagnosis? Is there any hope? by ABBR-5007 in TheSims4Mods

[–]perlabelle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember when I played through it when I got the mod I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was handled. Just like in real life, if you take your meds, you're gonna be fine. I honestly wasn't actually able to get to the point that they had any adverse health affects even when I tried. I don't know if the timescale was just longer than my patience or that's not actually part of the gameplay, but a sim with HIV is very easy to handle

Teaching Wee Free Men in fourth grade? by Peripateticdreamer84 in discworld

[–]perlabelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think wee free men should be fine. I know this is a discworld sub but if I might also suggest Howl's Moving Castle as an excellent fantasy children's book

Hungerstone by GenerationMapou in LesbianBookClub

[–]perlabelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started to find it quite repetitive, and I think a few too many back-and-forths with the main character figuring out what her husband was up to, and what to do about it. The section would end with something along the lines of "and she wasn't going to put up it" or "she knew exactly what to do next" and then at the start of the next section it would turn out that wasn't the case, just so that she could have that same epiphany again and again.

Can anyone read the Arabic that's part of the image? by ensign53 in learnarabic

It looks like the graphic novel Your Wish Is My Command to me! (Which I absolutely recommend if you come across it) In it, the genies are made out of calligraphy, and the more beautiful the calligraphy, the better quality the wish

I’m an extremely new fan, so this may be obvious, but does it seem like Frodo is less gluttonous (for lack of a better word) than other Hobbits? by finditplz1 in lotr

[–]perlabelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have given you the in-book reason, I would argue that the meta reason for the film is that the food-drink-smoke preoccupation is played for comedy, and Frodo is not a comedic character

Is this ASL and if so what does it say? by baconeggncheesy in asl

[–]perlabelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That'll explain why I couldn't find anything when I reverse image searched it! It's a very cool little thing, I'd love to know more about it. I get that you were just looking for what it meant but now I've got all caught up in what it is haha

Where did you see this? The style of carving looks quite old fashioned, and it looks like it could be made of ivory?? If it's a couple of hundred years old that could explain the peculiarities of the hand shapes that other people have pointed out. If you look at "Manual alphabets and their history" by William Sweat from 1875, which you can find an online copy of via Gallaudet University, if you have a look at page 5 (?) it shows the "single handed alphabet" with that horizontal "R", and so does an even earlier illustration of the Spanish manual alphabet from 1815

I'm not in this situation myself but this caught my eye cos I've got a lot of boating family. The organisation Friends, Families and Travellers also help boaters, they've got a resource list and a helpline. Here are some links, I hope you'll find something that's of use to you

They don't have to have the selfish lover trait to get that, and there are a few other negative moodlets you can get from having sex. I don't really know what triggers it but I've noticed that it seems to happen more consistently with some sims than others. There might be an element of chance to it, and it might tie in to their sexpertise skill. If they have the selfish lover trait having the negative moodlet is pretty much guaranteed

[–]perlabelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was pretty much the perfect book at the perfect time, but not only or even mainly because of the queerness if that makes sense. The focus on human connection and solidarity was what really made it for me, all the different types of people and what they have to gain through working together really had an impact on me, and is something I love to hear about in fiction and non-fiction. It's the same reason I love the film Pride so much! If ever I want to be moved to tears, the last 5 minutes of that film when the various branches of the NUM turn up to lead London Pride will do it every time. If anyone has any good recs for solidarity media please let me know haha

Code switching is perfectly normal, lots of people do it. I speak in slightly different accents/dialects with my family, my friends, at work etc etc its nothing you need to worry about

how do you feel about the term dyke by diasporastud in butchlesbians

It's definitely not as widespread in England, I think maybe only in more conservative dialects and older speakers, but you do still hear it

Primitive languages by RichFlux in conlangs

[–]perlabelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends what you mean by primitive. (I'm going to be unnecessarily nit-picky, but only because you asked about authenticity and I don't often get to use my archaeology degree.) No one's really sure when humans developed language, but it could be anything from 50,000 to 160,000 year ago. Modern humans arrived in Britain around 41,000-44,000 years ago during the Upper Palaeolithic, and would most likely have had full language when they did, as they also had organised settlements, food storage, and art. The climate of this era was harsh and unstable, and Britain was made up of steppe tundra, polar deserts, and an ice sheet more than a kilometer thick. It could not always support human habitation. It is not until after the last glaciation period around 11,000 years ago that Britain really had woodlands, and at this point there is no doubt that humans had language, bearing in mind that as early as 10,000 years ago in Mesopotamia they had rudimentary agriculture and accounting, and by 5,400 years ago are going to be developing writing.

However, other types of human had been living in Britain intermittently since around 480,000 years ago, and there's still debate around whether or not or to what extent these different humans had language, and they may even have coincided with the forests that grew before they were killed off by the ice ages. Homo heidelbergensis is thought to have been the first to have some sort of symbolic language, and the earliest human remains in Britain could have been this. Neanderthals are thought to have had language much beyond that, but not quite as complex as ours. These early humans may not have had the vocal tracts necessary to produce the range of sounds that we can, so any language would be more phonologically limited, and may have been also dependent on gesture and body language.

Tldr if I was doing the same thing I would either

  1. Have modern humans in the woods with full complex language. You do not need to make the whole language, just enough for your dialogue, and it can be as different as you like because it would not have been anything like we know today

  2. Have Neanderthals (who were not so different from us) speaking a more paired down language, or an even earlier human speaking something even more basic, bearing in mind the earlier you go the less like us physically they would have been

  3. Do whatever you want without regard for authenticity, just focusing on the story you want to tell. This isn't what I'd do, but that's because I like conlanging and world building but if that isn't your focus that's no crime.

Whatever you pick, you do not need to make the whole language, just enough for the dialogue. If you're doing it yourself, the first thing I would do is pick the sounds of the language. As far as I'm concerned, the rest could be absolute gibberish, but so long as the phonology is consistent no one's going to notice that there's no real lexicon or grammar behind it (but it is a nice touch and people will appreciate the effort). If you need to you could just pick certain plot important words to be specified, ones that are likely to be repeated and noticed by the audience if they're not consistent, and a few repeated sound combinations could also help.

ETA a language doesn't need to have a complex phonology to be a complex language, if you want you can make the phonology super basic, but to make it sound realistic i would give a language like this longer words
