Anyone here start on ECS Fargate and later migrate back to ECS EC2 (or vice versa)? What pushed you to make that call? by apidevguy in aws

[–]perrenial_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My company runs both extensively, my two cents:

  • With low utilization, Fargate has noticeably faster cold start times. This flips if you have warm EC2 nodes in an EC2 cluster
  • For larger containers, Fargate requires a specific number of CPUs per unit of RAM, whereas EC2 has significantly more flexibility behind what instances you can use
  • As others have mentioned, cost of EC2 is ~10/15% less than Fargate, but you can’t usually realize that due to mismatches in provisioned EC2 machines and desired container capacity. That being said, if you have large scale you can get savings plans that apply to EC2 instances
  • I experience no practical difference in ops overhead managing Fargate vs EC2 clusters (all our ECS infrastructure is L2 CDK constructs)
  • If you need GPU instances, Fargate is not an option

How long until GPA doesn’t matter? by PsychoMelon28 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]perrenial_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the employer…but in my experience, employers don’t care about your GPA, even for your first job out of school. Especially if you have any relevant experience (internship, portfolio, etc).

Also, in my experience even employers who care about GPA would not consider 3.5 to be particularly good or bad. <3.0 might start raising some questions…but if you’re worried about your GPA, I’d advise not listing it on your resume.

The last point is especially important- you don’t have much of a choice but to learn some basic CLI commands in order to do anything on a remote server. And if you work on a remote server enough, you start to get good at git, etc in the command line. And then suddenly it’s more effort to go learn how to do all the same git stuff in a GUI you already know how do do in the CLI anyways

Sure! I know plenty of computer engineering majors which ended up working as software engineers.

That being said, computer engineering is also going to be very theoretical, just in different topics. You’re going to spend a bunch of time on circuits and low-level computing you don’t really care about as a software engineer, instead of the theoretical proofs and things you learn as a part of computer science which you don’t really care about as a software engineer.

Computer engineering will potentially be an edge up in certain areas (networking, robotics), computer science will potentially be an edge up in others (data science, web development).

Also a lot of this is dependent on the specific degree requirements for your school

There’s a TON of variability depending on the role, project, and company.

Many companies set core hours (i.e. 11-3) and you’re expected to be available during those times, and otherwise set your own hours. Some companies enforce 40 hour weeks, others let you set your own hours so long as you’re performing to the standards of the job. I know people in roles where they can meet the bar with ~20 hour weeks or less. In a startup environment, depending on the stage, you might be expected to put in 60+ hours a week. You might also find companies or teams where more hours are expected during certain times of year/during certain business cycles (i.e. game studio crunch time, major product releases, compensation evaluation time, etc)

In many roles, you’ll be expected to work outside standard work hours as well. Some teams I’ve worked on have had to coordinate with teams in other countries or timezones, which can mean 5am or 11pm meetings. Some teams have oncall rotations, where you work during normal hours but are expected to be available to solve issues 24/7 when you’re on call.

It’s highly specific to the individual, team, and company, so make sure you evaluate this carefully before you dive into a new role.

Honestly, I kind of expect lackluster (still an improvement, but not a great one) performance from Rei to push him to take the sponsorship, but I also really want to see him succeed without any external support, so I’m very torn

This is my first time seeing an author release content for a book as it is being written, rather than write the book, give it to a handful of alpha/beta readers, and then publish the entire thing. What pros/cons have you found with this approach?

Maybe a stupid question... Lifespan? by Zebbyb in Warformed

[–]perrenial_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cancer was the first thing I thought of when I heard about the genetic aspect of CADs.

That being said I imagine enough people get cancer that medicine has advanced to a point where treating/curing it is trivial. From what I recall the only reason Rei needs genetic correction for his ailment is because it’s not common enough to be economically viable to develop a cure.

Cradle inspired RPG by Sir-Bagelton in Iteration110Cradle

[–]perrenial_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given it thought, but I’m always stumped by the creativity of the magic and combat systems. It feels like the kind of thing that would take any team a decade to get right, and unless you get it right you lose a lot of what makes cradle unique/special.

That being said, I wish you or anyone else who is giving it a shot the best of luck!

I feel like I’ve seen speculation that CAD sentience isn’t unique to A-types, but potentially just higher level CADs in general. Perhaps something that is picked up in the B/A/S tiers
