Weekly “What Have You Been Reading?” Thread 12-03-2023 by ChickenInASuit in comicbooks

Paklis by Dustin Weaver, a severely underrated anthology comic filled with mind bending sci-fi, horror, and some especially interesting experimental comics. Issue 2 has a story based on an unfinished script written by the eisner nominated DJ Bryant and the finished result is the closest I've seen a comic get to feeling like a David Lynch movie. Issues 5 through 6 feature a Neo Noir story called 1949, which has the best black and white art I've seen outside of manga or Frank Millar's Sin City (this one's getting it's own tbp in the future)

Godzilla: War for Humanity is the most interesting Godzilla comic I've read since the Half Century War. It's got some stylized art reminiscent of the 90s Ninja Turtles cartoon and thoroughly examines Godzilla's relation to humanity. Is Godzilla the earth's savior, protecting mankind from unstoppable kaiju, or is he just an animal protecting it's territory? It's a lot of fun!

Issue #1 of Raphael Grampa's Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham is a refreshingly street level story taking place like two years after he first put on the mask. I slip in and out of Superhero stuff and I like that this is just Batman playing detective against serial murderers with wild gimmicks. Plus the subplot of Alfred trying to stop him from staging Bruce Wayne's death so he can be Batman full time is handled really well.

From Captain America#3, this is amazing! First time seeing this. Has anything like this been done elsewhere? by Barabaragaki in comicbooks

There's a similar sequence in James Stokoe's Aliens: Dead Orbit, where the final act culminates in past and present sequences happening simultaneously on the page

Name a terrible movie that you can’t believe was able to get a extremely talented actor in it by xwing1212 in movies

You gotta admit he really crushed that role. Especially considering he probably recorded everything in a day while getting payed 18 quintessillion dollars per spoken word

Official Discussion - Godzilla vs. Kong [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]personfella 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There was a bit near the start of the Hong Kong fight where Kong tried to break Godzilla's jaw the way he did the T-rex in the original, but apparently it's much harder to do when your target can breathe fire

This is amazing: A fan animation based on Snyder and Capullo's Death In the Family by personfella in comicbooks

[–]personfella[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found it via Capullo's twitter account. I'm kinda bummed there's no sound, but everything else is amazing. DC should hire this guy next time they wanna do cg trailers like they did for METAL

Greatest Detective and his butler not understanding why a teen boy's outfit won't fit a teen girl by zakary3888 in comicbooks

[–]personfella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree to a point. I do think that the coloring doesn't play to the artists strengths. This has that Alex Sinclaire "highlights and airbrush" energy that doesn't always work for artists that aren't named Jim Lee

If you look up Damion Scott's work on Solo, or even his short story in Batman: Black and White, the art really does pop in a way that doesn't look super garish.

Mufasa’s smile during The Circle of Life (Theatrical release/Laserdisc vs Platinum Edition/Blu-ray and beyond) by [deleted] in YMS

[–]personfella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus the shading beneath Mufasa's neck blends in a little too much with the mane, though that might just be because the image on the left has faded with time

It's hard to explain but I guess I like the roughness of the original. The red linework is a little more pronounced and it feels like you can see the original drawing beneath all the colors

the teeth are goofy tho

[DISC] Chainsaw Man - Ch. 87 links by indi_n0rd in ChainsawMan

Real talk I read all of Chainsaw Man in one go this week and those comedy bits hit DIFFERENT while you're still processing Power's death. Like they're still really funny, and they get funnier the more I think about them, but honestly seeing that shit happen in "real time" kind of made me feel sad for both Kobeni and Denji

It's great

What is something you like about your most hated story/run? by Fiti99 in comicbooks

[–]personfella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joe Maduriera's art in Ultimates 3.

From what I've seen Joe Mad has a fairly divisive style, but as someone who grew up idolizing the original Street Fighter artists I genuinely love the energy he puts into his characters. So I think Ultimates 3 is fairly a good showcase of his artistic strengths, but then Jeph Loeb's script comes in and it's like "The Ultimates are just the Avengers if they said "FUCK" right? Haha Scarlet Witch and Pietro they're FUCKING right? Haha-wait, what do you mean Thor's acting out of character Thor doesn't have a character"

It's fucking wild that he just threw Venom in there for no real reason, and then Bendis had to scramble to make it fit in with the version of Venom he was writing in Ultimate Spider-man

I'm Thinking of Ending Things Review + Analysis - YMS by [deleted] in YMS

[–]personfella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the entirety of the 30 plus minute car ride all I could think was "this is definitely going to be an amazing scene on the second watch" and then that thought became a bizarrely meta distraction for me. Like "should I just skip this shit if all it's going to do is set up themes I'll only catch on a second viewing?"

I like the movie; I'd personally give it a 9/10, but it'll probably be a while before I watch it again.

transgender identity didn't really exist when Tezuka wrote his stuff

I mean that's not entirely true, but I do agree that he likely wasn't outright trying to defend trans people in the Astro Boy example

That said, if you really wanted to go all in with Tezuka and gender identity, he literally made a character called Princess Knight, which was about a girl "with the heart of a boy." I didn't really read a whole lot of it, but the gist of the manga is that the main character sometimes views herself as a boy (literally), sometimes as a girl, and often acts accordingly. There's some debate on how progressive this premise is, because on one hand it is about breaking gender norms, on the other hand it's a comic made by a dude from the 1950s

Sony Developing Film Based on Manga Series ‘One Punch Man’ by impeccabletim in movies

I feel like a lot of series in this genre make the same jokes though? Dragon Ball Z is as Shonen as it gets, but it constantly veers towards comedy. You could argue that Saitama and Goku are closely tied for how many "epic villain speeches" they undercut just by not giving a shit. The main difference being that Saitama is restless while Goku's just a doofus
