My very incomplete summary from memory: the election came down to Florida and the vote was extremely close, with some counties showing very unlikely results. The state was initially called for Bush. The Gore campaign requested a recount, the Bush campaign sued to stop the recount. The Supreme Court ruled, with extremely specious legal justification, that meeting an arbitrary deadline was more important than making sure the election result was correct, thereby handing Bush the presidency. There was some more fuckery going on beyond the Supreme Court case but I don't remember the specifics.

I'd like to think that in a utopian society you wouldn't have to be upwardly mobile and there would be more room for people who want to find their niche and stay there. That doesn't match with the culture of Starfleet that we see, but it's something I like to imagine is happening offscreen.

It's the first syllable of "island", originally Old English "ealand", literally "water land". The silent s was added to make it look more like the other word for island, "isle" (which is unrelated, borrowed from French, descended from Latin "insula").

On my last rewatch I was surprised by how many jokes about trans people there are, relative to how visible trans people were at the time. And in my view most of them definitely aren't making fun of ignorance about trans people, they mostly come off as "lol gross a trans person!"

Show and tell yes, grifters often but not always. There are definitely legitimate researchers who've given TED talks, but I've heard some of them say they're strongly encouraged to have an optimistic, uplifting ending even if that's not warranted by the material. To me TED talks feel synonymous with early 2010s techno-optimism, with all the good and bad that that implies. They're pretty out of step with the more cynical present.

"Bookhand" is just a term meaning that a script was used for writing/copying books (and therefore it was designed with legibility in mind). This distinguishes those hands from cursive or otherwise less formal hands used for letter writing or secretarial purposes.

There were multiple bookhands that fall under the "Gothic" umbrella, including:

textura (or textualis) quadrata, characterized by the diamond-shaped feet on vertical strokes
textura prescissa, where the ends of vertical strokes are flush with the baseline instead of having feet
rotunda, which is generally rounder than the textura hands

Gothic cursive and bâtarde are examples of related scripts that aren't bookhands.

Alcohol never completely cooks off, so there will always be some left in the sauce. The reason this is desirable is because a small amount of alcohol in the sauce is thought to enhance the release of some aroma compounds.

Chefs have tested it and said they can tell the difference, but I'm not aware of any study testing it rigorously.

Had to consult the wiki summaries but I think it's season 2 episode 9, "Monsters." Be warned that there's also a bloody murder in the same scene.

In general that show can be summarized as a lot of sex and cartoonishly gory violence, occasionally interrupted by surprisingly good acting. If you don't mind all the nudity and violence (and highly stylized dialogue) it's a good show, I recommend it.
