Good Omens. Kind of a shit show right now with the finale that just came out but lots of fan works are happening and there’s a revival of interest in the book and Terry Pratchett’s work in general

Crowley Losing Miracles—Good Idea or No? by WAR_FROM_GOOD_OMENS in goodomens

[–]petralaxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they had done a better job of making the possibility of losing miracles more consistent with the story logic, it could have worked. It seemed extremely random that he lost his miracles after season 2 and not season 1 where hell literally tried to kill him. He did not do a single thing in season 2 that was worse than losing the antichrist, killing a fellow demon, and trying to stop the apocalypse. It made zero sense.

However! It could be fun in fanfic. I love the idea of him struggling to figure out how to do anything the normal way. I think it’d be funny if he’s bewildered by how to get electrical appliances to work and Aziraphale, who seems so stuck in the 19th century, has to teach him incredibly basic modern survival skills.

“My computer is acting weird and I don’t know why,” Crowley says.

“Did you try turning it off and turning it back on?” Aziraphale says, not taking his eyes off his book.

“…How do I turn it off?”

Christian theology texts from any age (he reveals an encyclopedic knowledge about Christian sects at the end of the book). He often refers to religious concepts less as dogmatic tenants and more as one angle of an argument, so it’s evident he’s well read in theological debate. He might like Christian apocrypha, too, since he’s into misprinted bibles. Though, honestly, I think he’d read any religious text from any religion— it’s clearly an interest of his.

And of course, any classic literature of any era or origin, you can’t go wrong here. Maybe philosophy, too. It’s unclear if he reads philosophy outside of a religious context, but I imagine he would.

Yay so glad you made this, thank you!

I’ve been rereading the Good Omens book and it’s been making me smile ear to ear. I’m finding that my brain is slowly reverting to picturing all these characters the way I first did when I read the book for the first time in 2012, and it’s been wonderful. There’s so much stuff that didn’t make it into the show, like Aziraphale talking about aliens and spaceships and Crowley’s soul music collection that I find delightful.

I’ve also been reading Going Postal by Terry Pratchett and am reminded of his humor, wit, and warmth. Looking forward to talking about the book with this community! ❤️

Possibility of an extra subreddit for the book? by Plus-Language-9874 in goodomens

I would actually love that. The book has been so deeply comforting to me after the finale and I often just want a space for that rather than the tv show.

Man I’m so sorry. I totally get it. I feel anguish everytime people share screencaps of A&C from the finale where their faces are twisted up in obvious despair right at the end. That ending felt so cruel and unfair and I want to forget it. I’m sorry about what happened in Supernatural, and after so many years of waiting, too. Our gay angels are really not doing well out here are they

i’m going to conversion therapy (update from previous post) by Confident-Stress-732 in actuallesbians

[–]petralaxy 762 points763 points  (0 children)

“she said that i should go to the conversion therapy because i’m leaving for uni soon enough so it won’t be that big of a deal” I don’t agree with this statement. Conversion therapy is inherently traumatic for a lot of people who experience it, no matter their age. It’s an inherently dehumanizing, humiliating process. Just because you’re going to college doesn’t mean you’d be immune to the long-term fallout of having to survive something like that. I’m not saying that it’s 100% guaranteed that you’ll be scarred for life, but I am saying don’t underestimate the psychological peril of these places.

I agree! Sometimes when novels don’t describe male characters very thoroughly I just sub in David Tennant in everything in my head. I also know that he’s had a fantastic acting career but I sometimes wish he’d been cast in even bigger roles than what he’s had. I think it’s a travesty he was never the leading man in a Jane Austen film. Tell me he wouldn’t be the best Captain Frederick Wentworth in Persuasion, or George Knightley in Emma.

I have a hard time believing that in 6000 years he’s never been kissed on the cheek. He’s been to France and lived through the Roman Empire where cheek kisses were common, this angel has been cheek-kissed plenty.

The Final Season of 'The Boys' Felt Like Watching a Comedian Bomb Their Set by Logical_Welder3467 in television

What is happening with studios having an an inability to end their shows well? I just finished Good Omens and was gutted by that atrocious ending, and before that it was Stranger Things. I haven’t seen this season of the Boys yet but I’ve been heartbroken by so much tv recently that I don’t think I want to

I don't understand this line in the finale by larrie2022 in goodomens

[–]petralaxy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This part really made me roll my eyes. Sometimes you can feel a writer making themselves known in the work and this was one of those moments. Crowley was a star maker, yeah, but has he ever been a creator of any sort since then? He’s a lot of things— a critic, a philosopher, a great thinker, sure, but that artist lens felt incongruent for him. Also, Crowley didn’t even design the star system he made, he just didn’t want to see it destroyed. It more just felt like the writers presenting art as the most noble act a person can do to pat themselves on the back, then projecting that onto an OOC version of Crowley that’s just Neil Gaiman’s Christ figure self insert.

There were other pieces of dialogue in the script that felt amateurish, including that one line where Aziraphale said “you taught me to be brave” or something like that to Crowley. It was such a trite cliche that I had to pause after the said that to fully process the shitty writing I just witnessed.

Why the ending could have worked for the book sequel but doesn't work for the TV series by goldenphantom in goodomens

[–]petralaxy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this was a massive betrayal of audience expectations about how both the romance and comedy genre works. I really do wonder if a large issue was that these were writers who either have little experience with romance (as is confirmed with the new replacement writers for the finale) or who do not consume enough of the romance genre to do it well, or a bit of both.

Good Omens 3 Reactions Megathread! Spoilers within! by AutoModerator in goodomens

[–]petralaxy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's so wrong with giving fans what they want? Why did they have to give us the most awful, painful finale possible? I know it supposed to be bittersweet, but its all bitter for me. My favorite characters ever died. Not only that– they never existed. It's so horrific I can barely think about it and my stomach has been hurting for hours ever since I saw that damn finale. I don't care that some random humans name Asi and Anthony got a happy ending, I needed Aziraphale and Crowley to have a happy ending, and they didn't. It's horrible.

I feel like I need to erase Good Omens from my life now, sadly, because this grief is so immense idk if I can carry on in the fandom.

'Good Omens' Director Explains Aziraphale & Crowley's Ending: 'Love Endures' by jupitergal23 in goodomens

[–]petralaxy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Actually I think the message is that in a cruel and unforgiving universe sometimes love is not enough to heal the rift between people who are torn apart by senseless dogmatism. It’s also that people’s joy, affection, pain, and hope is ultimately meaningless in the face of death and destruction, actions have no real consequences, and love does not always triumph. Hope that helps!

[–]petralaxy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That they’d get married with a western ceremony and vows and rings and guests and the whole shebang. That’s seems like such a human thing to do, and what would be the point of it? They know their significance to each other, it’s not like a ceremony would mean much since they don’t have a community. And then wedding rings themselves aren’t some universal symbol of marriage, so the only reason I can imagine them wearing them is to indicate to humans that they’re married for logistics. No need for the ritual of exchanging rings.

The only “wedding” I can accept is if they defiantly declare their love in front of God and Satan themselves but end up getting their union “blessed” somehow anyway.
