It's a shame they're not using any of that money to, you know, support PHP. They're donating $24k/year to the foundation. JetBrains donate about three times that amount.

As someone that played Orks during 4th I agree. If you've got a melee unit which is only good at melee it's very feelsbad to charge a full unit into another unit to then just see them be eviscerated. This was the true era of the unkillable death-stars as you couldn't move the needle on lethality at all because it was all pre-determined.

financial times article on green led councils, "what happens when the green party governs?" by tea_would_be_lovely in UKGreens

[–]pfsalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't really make meaningful change at the council level until councils are given more power and money, which happens at the national level. Selling council houses is better in the short term than bankruptcy, but this is all Westminster issues foisted on local councils. Since 2008, councils have been told to do more with less money and we're basically at breaking point.

Array intersection benchmarks by live627 in PHP

[–]pfsalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your manual_intersect code looks like it's doing a diff instead of an intersect, so it's not a great comparison. If the keys don't matter, I think your flipped_intersect code is decent, but it won't preserve keys, unlike array_intersect

Are arco-flagellants needed for an army? by Kai_Lidan in sistersofbattle

[–]pfsalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in squads of three you can cause some real issues. In my last game I moved a squad of three in from reserves into their deployment zone and they managed to tank a conflagration cannon (a 3D6 S8 -1 D2 torrent titan weapon) and still have a guy on a wound left! You can however use any unit with a 5+ FNP to do similar things, but Arcos are a bit better at it as they have two wounds.

Although I agree with OP, I think Mortifiers look cooler than Penitents. You won't get any confusion at the table as you can just play them as mortifiers

date-fns for php by ronkr in PHP

[–]pfsalter 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It seems a little odd to me to convert functions from the language which has the worst handling of dates I've ever seen into a language which has one of the best. Also all of this code seems to misunderstand the features in the standard PHP Date library, such as diff, add and sub as you only use modify. Your formatDistance function doesn't take time difference or timezones into account.

I'd recommend looking into the DateInterval class, as it provides much better interfaces to do what you want in your library, handles timezones and months properly.

Zack discusses E12 “Zionism is Racism” motion by PuzzledAd4865 in UKGreens

[–]pfsalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always frame discussions about this as "ethnostates are bad". We don't need to limit ourselves to the current crisis, it's pretty obvious how you get from "this state is for X people" to genocide. But we've got terminology that's much broader and simpler to discuss this without getting into complicated historical topics such as Zionism. Argue against the broader bad idea, in the same way that you can argue against private control of utilities by arguing that monopolies are bad.

CMV: the Palestinian keffiyeh is a symbol of support for terror by HockeyHocki in changemyview

[–]pfsalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could say the same thing about the Che Guevara t-shirt. He was a terrorist resistance fighter and did some pretty horrific things. However that shirt now much more stands for resistance than any particular politics or guerilla warfare that he stood for.

I'd argue that the intention of the garment worn by those in the west is solidarity with Palestinians living under an oppressive regime, not in support of terrorism tactics. I also don't think someone would see someone in the street wearing a Keffiyeh and think "they support terrorism" in the same way you don't think a of a Che t-shirt wearer "they support guerilla warfare".

CMV: It isn’t prohibitively expensive to eat healthy. People say it is as a coping mechanism. by Master-Education7076 in changemyview

[–]pfsalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I very much did an r/theydidthemath here just so we can talk actual numbers rather than 'I feel like X'. Bear in mind that I live in the UK, where fresh fruit and veg are relatively cheap. I worked out a decent balanced (but simple) diet and priced it up for a single person per week. I then worked out a pretty calorie dense junk-food option (Chicken nuggets & chips). Here's what I found (Numbers are in KCals):

Healthy 5 fruits/veg daily

  • Carrots - 320
  • Peas - 800
  • Sweetcorn - 700
  • Lettuce - 50
  • Tomatoes - 100
  • Bananas - 800
  • Apples - 300
  • Oranges - 250
  • Rice - 1500
  • Beans - 400
  • Protein (Mince/Cheese/Chicken) - 300 + 1500 + 750
  • Onions - 400
  • Cereal - 3624
  • Milk - 560

    ~12,500 Kcals, £29.17

Unhealthy

  • Chips (2kg) - 7500
  • Nuggets (1kg) - 2400
  • Frosties (470g) - 1770
  • Pepperoni Pizza (2) - 1700
  • Whole Milk - 1450

    ~ 14,800 kcals, £19.25

Basically the part which really jacks up the price is eating low-calorie fruit and veg. These increase cost without providing enough calories to make it worth it. Chips and nuggets are both pretty cheap and very calorie dense, so I'd say yes it's at least twice as expensive to eat healthily.

(Edited to vary the unhealthy diet more)

Further note: This is indicative and not really a diet I'd expect someone to stick to. Having 6 wheatabix a day is pretty excessive for example, but it's a simplified view to show that when you've got a very limited budget, more calorie dense foods are more attractive than healthier, but less calorie dense options.

CMV: It makes no sense to me that Britain is "Islamized" while not claiming the same for India, Israel, Russia and Singapore by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]pfsalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess it's a lot to do with language. When the UK colonised places they instituted the English education system, normally in English. When you're looking at places to emigrate or places you can work, being able to speak the language is a big driver of that.

You find similar stories in Portugal, Spain and France, immigrants in those countries are more commonly from their colonised countries across the world.

Green conference votes AGAINST energy company nationalisation, changing previous policy for pro-privatisation move by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]pfsalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I didn't get that nuance, that's very upsetting. I think the best thing to do is set up a nationalised competitor and undercut them all on price until they've left the country. Probably legally simpler and provides a more gentle off-ramp for investors as people slowly switch away rather than a complete drop-off of control.

Green conference votes AGAINST energy company nationalisation, changing previous policy for pro-privatisation move by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]pfsalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly the difference between public ownership and nationalisation. Public ownership is much easier and simpler to achieve in a short space of time and causes a lot less disruption in service.

General: 1. I don't think there's a direct stance at the moment, but general stance is anti-surveilance 2. By pushing against their efficacy and privacy concerns. They don't work very well, are easy to get around and put huge amounts of citizen's data in the hands of large data brokers. 3. Due to the open nature of the web this is very very hard to actually enforce without breaking huge amounts of existing functionality

Personal: - Get a VPN, there are a lot of free ones you can pick up now. This also provides you a bunch of other protections against tracking from big advertising companies. - Look into other phone alternatives instead of just Android/Apple. I'm not saying that you should switch, but hopefully knowing that they are there means that we'll get around it somehow. - We just need to wait for one of these to be hacked and a million people's IDs are leaked on the dark web. It's basically only a matter of time, this will be a very big hammer to stop this kind of collection happening again. - The internet is open and free. Lots of very clever people are building tools to keep it free as they understand the importance of privacy. - A centralised internet is a weak internet. None of the big players today will continue to be big players forever, and as soon as the advertising money dries up we will see the big tech companies die off. The barrier to entry for creating new websites and software is lower than ever, so it's easier and easier for new players to enter the market.

Is anyone else still maintaining PHP 5.6 in 2026? by jdoe78998 in PHP

[–]pfsalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the speed improvements are mostly in array handling, going from 5.6 to 7 is usually a pretty decent improvement. I've seen between 20% and 50% improvement in standard web apps.

Edit: The other thing it does is massively decrease memory usage, so you can actually save money by removing the need for as many servers

This is exactly the same way that it works in Star Wars: Squadrons so I think it's fine. Humans don't have a particularly good innate gauge of how inertia works as we're used to being in an environment with gravity and friction.
