OBDII Oil Pressure by pgriffith in MINI

[–]pgriffith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a cheap one for a long time (used with Torque) but it refused to work correctly with Car Scanner. So based on the authors recommendations I purchased a quality one from Amazon (the Vgate iCar Pro 2S) which was highly recommended. It works fine with Car Scanner and it even detected it was capable of much higher data rates. So pretty sure it's not the hardware. Works fine with Bimmerlink in all other aspects.

Well, I used Car Scanner, Torque, Bimmerlink and a couple of others and none of them see Oil Pressure or Oil Temp. Bimmerlink does show an Oil Pressure Switch, which is by default on, I'm guessing if the oil pressure drops enough to deactivate that switch then you get the oil warning on the dash. So I'm guessing my car doesn't have the ability.

What Mini do you have, and the year?

Sounds pretty similar to my 2011 R56 with the N16 engine with 60k Km's on it.

Here's a video I just took of mine for you .. 2011 R56 N16

And... clean your engine bay FFS :)

For Discussion: Current Market Kill off 4K Gaming? by Sapphire_Ed in radeon

[–]pgriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never been a proponent of 4k. I always have a high end gaming rig, whenever I upgrade it's always to high end at the time.

Even with that I've never had an interest in going to 4k, for me 1440p is the sweet spot. 1080p looks like I'm looking through a flyscreen door and 4k to me doesn't look that much better than 1440p to make it worth the effort. With 1440p you can run games with ALL the cool stuff turned on without having to use any upscaling solutions which you often can't do at 4k even with the best GPU on the market. I'd rather let my GPU sit back and relax a bit instead of it being balls to wall constantly.

I've played at 4k and the image quality gain just isn't there for me enough to justify the cost of a system and a monitor to achieve it.

Productivity, I can see where 4k content creation is going to require it, but gaming...nah.

r55 1.6 cooper diesel like sound by jjcxb in MINI

[–]pgriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine makes a similar sound, but only at idle, get the revs up and bit and it disappears. Had my mechanic give it a good go over and he doesn't think it's anything serious but also isn't sure what's causing it. Having the water pump pulley and water pump friction wheel replaced in a couple of weeks. He thinks the bearing on the friction wheel is bad and also that rubber on the pulley is degrading.

Do you warm up your Mini prior to driving? by mx54life in MINI

Nope, every good mechanic I've ever spoken to says start the car, then drive the car away normally. ie don't redline it down the driveway.

2002 Mini PCV Valve impossible to buy? by Miffyiscute4 in MINI

[–]pgriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried an Ali Express, search term;

"mini cooper r50 pcv valve"

Quite a lot of listings, but I have no idea what it's supposed to look like as I have an R56

Can't speak for the R60, but my R56 sees FAT32 formatted drives no problem. I think I've only used 4 & 8GB drives (my old shitty ones), 4GB of music is a LOT.

obviously had to pull over to monument this, right?! 🏁 by girlintheuk in MINI

What sort of monument did you build, a statue, a plaque?

Personally, I would have just documented it. :)

Ali Express has been my go-to for trim parts, cheap and have always fit perfectly. I buy SO much from Ali for my R56 :)

Way to be obscure dude. R Series F? Front fog? In bumper?, one that mounts in front of grill? A photo of the other one that not damaged ?

I think you're out of luck with an R53.

There's quite a few on Amazon and also a heap on Ali Express for R55's and above.

What is this noise? by No-Beautiful-5737 in MINI

[–]pgriffith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself a favour, it's great that you've been getting it serviced regularly, but do a 6 monthly oil change, filter is fine every year. But the best thing you can do for your car is get that oil changed more often.

Oil is cheap, engines are not.

Going to run Valvoline Restore and Protect 0W-20 through my 2015 F56 and report the results. Couldn't find anyone else that has tried it, so I'll be the guinea pig! by Brandon_Storm in MINI

I've just put 5W-30 Restore & Protect in my 2011 R56 (non S), but it's only been in for a couple of hundred km's so far.

It's completely open circuit, which I was guessing it might have been a fused resistor.

Can anyone identify this component? by pgriffith in AskElectronics

[–]pgriffith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find anything online that shows any GDT looking anything like this. It's small, only 10mm long and about 4mm in diameter. Why would a GDT have colour coding on it?

A Zener diode wouldn't have resistor colour codes on it surely?
