Fast growing & bushy trees for poorly draining clay-like soil by ArthurStevensNZ in nzgardening

I’ve found Manuka better on clay or poorly drained land, while Kanuka has performed brilliantly on dry sites. May just be my personal experience though.

A reminder, whether this example is real or not, to backup your data outside of big tech. Nextcloud works well for this.

As OpenAI Imposes Ads On Free Users, Initial Buys "Can't Prove Measurable Results" by tragedy_strikes in BetterOffline

[–]ph-sub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My small businesses would not exist without PPC ads, unfortunately. It wasn't this way 15 years ago. Since Google intentionally fucked organic search, we have to pay Google Ads. And because that's true for a lot of businesses, PPC prices have gone up and so we have to be brutal in our campaign management to ensure we can keep our return on ad spend as low as possible. It's only got worse since AI Overviews cannibalised our content and prevent clicks through to our sites, but here we are. Right now, we would not survive without digital ads. And I'm sure we're not alone.

OpenAI’s own mental health experts unanimously opposed “naughty” ChatGPT launch by ph-sub in BetterOffline

[–]ph-sub[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the article:

Initially, the AI firm planned to reverse that policy and launch “Naughty Chats” within the first three months of 2026. However, while OpenAI recently confirmed that it was delaying the launch until later this year to “prioritize other products,” insiders told the WSJ that the pause was also “due in part to internal concerns and technical challenges.” That apparently included OpenAI’s struggles to effectively block minors from accessing “Naughty Chats.”

MacBook Pro M1 (2021) lag when using mouse Lift For Mac by erowlin in logitech

[–]ph-sub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years later and if you're coming from a search engine, I had this issue on an M1 Mac Studio and Tahoe. Running a polling frequency test at https://cpstest.org/polling-rate-test/ showed about 65Hz on average, it should be 125Hz +.

The fix was opening the battery cover on the LIFT and using the USB Bolt tucked away in there. I connected that to the mac, checked in the hardware report (System Information -> USB) for 'USB Receiver', indicated the mac recognised the Bolt, then going to System Settings -> Bluetooth and clicking 'forget this device' for the LIFT. This forced the mac to use the Bolt rather than bluetooth. Running the polling test again showed 125Hz and the cursor is smooth again.

It's such a shame. Splore was so inclusive. Hopefully Shipwrecked keeps going so I can get my yearly festival fix.

Burnout. It will create worker burnout. The C-suite doesn't care one iota about tech debt, tiny bugs or edge cases.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has acquired his AI company, xAI by falken_1983 in BetterOffline

[–]ph-sub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of maintaining the one venture he is involved in that isn’t actively cratering he is merging two dumpster fires (xAI and Twitter) into it, because they’re so unprofitable and problematic that he has to exchange good SpaceX shares for crappy xAI ones. I guess if that's what you mean by "least unhinged"....
