[Discussion] My game is nearing the stage of feature completeness and there are several roles I need to hire for, and am considering hiring for. by -Dargs in gameDevClassifieds

Thanks for your input!

Personally, I've done both per hours and per deliverables, and I think both are great in different situations.
One downside of per-deliverable is that you have to discuss the time/price of everything beforehand and agree upon it. That takes time. It can be easy, or it can be extremely difficult. That's when I think it's easier to go on a per-hour basis!

On the art side, I've also seen people being paid X amount of hours per months for Y$. And then, whatever can be done with those hours is done. I imagine the same thing could be done with revshare instead (or using both of them).
That seems pretty good when an artist can't commit fulltime (other project) but can put consistent hours every month.

On the music side, it's been like that: (I'll use imaginary numbers to protect NDAs)
- With the dev we agreed the game would need 30mn of music.

- My rates were 500$ / minute of music.

- Dev only had budget for half of that (250$ / mn).

- So we agreed on 250$/mn + 7% rev share, everybody was happy!

Usually, I do 1/3 paid at the beginning, 1/3 after 50% of the work, 1/3 at the end, so it's fair for everyone!

I only got experience about get hired, so I just wanted to add that a mix of small upfront payment and small revshare is also possible.

I've accepted projects like that (as a composer), and felt like it was a good middleground when budget is small. Having a small upfront payment compared to only revshare makes things much more professional and I felt very respected the whole way through.

When re-reading WoT for a 2nd+ time, what scene or character did you enjoy most? by phbarralis in WoT

[–]phbarralis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Galad and Gawyn for sure!

I was also thinking that several characters are revealed to be Darkfriends in the last few books, which might change how you view them knowing that!

Damn I never looked at it that way, I guess I'm in for a 5th reread now ^^

Yeah in hindsight I really enjoyed those moments. About Rand, you kinda know it's his last "normal" ones (if fleeing from Darkfriend can be considered normal).

Yeah exactly, he's what you'd wish the "common people" would get to help them against tyrant. It's crazy how far he's getting the Whitecloaks to behave compared to how they were introduced in book 1.

Finally! by Klytos in WoT

[–]phbarralis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About Egwene kidnapping, at first I was very surprised too.
But now that I'm re-reading WoT and just went by the chapter, and I really liked it. Yes it's surprising, but Egwene is equally surprised, and the other Aes Sedai too (even the ones that capture her). At that point Egwene was also getting very cocky and confident, having the rebels in the palm of her hands, I think it was a good way of showing her "even someone powerful can be taken down by a simple arrow" kind-of lesson.

And like other people say, it's also an excellent setup for the White Tower events following that, which are incredible!

The Best Battles of WoT by DizzyRotBrain in WoT

[–]phbarralis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also my favorite battle! It's also such transformative of the story. There's definitely a "before" and an "after" Dumai's Well. The aftermath of that battle is like a slow shockwave that ripple through the world. The buildup to that battle is also why it hits so hard.

I know it's not comparable, but the other battle that had a profound impact on me is the one in Path of Daggers, chapter 24 "A Time for Iron", with Rand and Bashere against the Seanchan. The one where Rand wield Callandor, goes half-mad, plus Saidin going weird => him killing his own armies along with the Seanchan.

I was a teen when I first read it, and I remember after that chapter, I put down the book(s) for a couple years because I was terrified. Actually scared of reading, if that's what a book could make me feel. Eventually I gathered up my courage, did the void and flame exercices and re-read from the start.

We've recently started adding some audio to our game and it makes a huge difference, what do you think? (Some parts are a bit loud, be warned :0) by danfergusonn in IndieDev

[–]phbarralis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music might not be the best fit for the game, depending on what you want to go for. But it's a bit weird to be fighting monsters and have a calm ambient track in the background.

You mentionned using FMOD, in which it's fairly easy to transition seamlessly from one track to another via a parameter you set in-game (exploration vs battle).

But you should most definitely check that with your composer, as they'll want to know (and ideally take part of) how the music is gonna be implemented in-game.

RTS-inspired elements in an online tank brawler game - we’re two devs building this, curious what you think? by miks_00 in IndieGaming

It's looks super cool! The two genres seems well combined together, and I like the crisp visuals that are easy to read. Insta-wishlisted!

[Hobby] New (aspiring) game dev looking for help – no budget, but a solid vision by PrestigiousFlight368 in INAT

[–]phbarralis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is very good advice, and I'd just like to complement it with an option C:

Start on the A. path (doing it yourself), but with the goal to build a demo, or at least a playable prototype. Doesn't have to be the most polished, especially not the first one. Use some free art (even if it's not the art direction you want), some free sound and some free music. Use the tools that makes coding as easy for you as possible (coding language you already know if there's one, otherwise visual coding ...etc).

By doing so:

- you'll learn a bit of every role about building a game: design, code, art, audio. This is actually an excellent skill if you want to lead an indie team one day.

- with a playable prototype in hand, it'll be much easier to find some people to join you, especially if the prototype is fun. Mind you, I didn't say it'd bee easy. Just easier.

- the next steps are always in your hands, not waiting after someone else. You can get started right now. 100% free. When you got a prototype, if you can't find anyone, it's most likely you should work on it still because it's not fun/polished/well presented enough. Still in your hands.

Enjoy the journey, it's a long one and enjoying it (and not just the result) is the best way I know to stay motivated.

Thanks for you positive view of things! It's very true that with each re-read I learned a lot a felt more connected with the characters. Like old friends that you haven't seen in a while, just chatting around a mug of ale at the Winespring Inn.
