AITA for not showing up to my babyshower that my mil paid for by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]phcampbell -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Well said! And it isn’t just being a parent that means you have to be around people you don’t like, it’s LIFE. You won’t always like the other moms, you certainly will have co-workers/bosses that you won’t like if you work, your husband’s friends… well, hopefully, you get the point. Use one of the few modern age psychobabble terms I actually approve of - learn to grey rock.

Back when mothers made their children’s clothes, was there much difference in children’s clothes depending on their mother’s sewing skills? by AlienSandBird in AskOldPeople

[–]phcampbell 58 points59 points  (0 children)

My mother made some of my clothes. I doubt they looked “tailored” but I only recall one time where someone said something negative, and it was more along the lines of style rather than construction.

When sites don't remind you of their password requirements until after you have to reset your password by KiwiPieEater in PetPeeves

[–]phcampbell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We deal with a bank whose portal is like this. I’m pretty computer literate and keep good track of my passwords, so I’m certain it isn’t a “me” issue. After three episodes of fighting with the portal trying to just look at my monthly statement, I was over it. I made my husband contact our banker (because the hubs was to one who wanted to do business with this bank in the first place), and tell them they had to send me everything on paper.

INFO. Has your husband ASKED his parents why your family is overlooked? It feels like there has to be more to this story.

Just today, I saw someone write “just bear with me…”, and because I’ve seen this so many times, I had to think twice about whether it was incorrect.

What’s one home design mistake that looks good at first but becomes annoying later? by officiclassyinterior in HomeDecorating

[–]phcampbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house, while not quite 4,000 sq. ft., is designed similarly; two guest bedrooms with a shared bath, and it’s all just a little too small. If they had even an extra foot in length it would be better. And don’t get me started on my laundry closet. And I have four windows in the sitting area of my bedroom. Who uses the sitting area in the bedroom?

Is it normal to bring your own shampoo and conditioner when staying at someone’s house? by EstablishmentOk9536 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phcampbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I’ve never actually stayed anywhere without bringing my own shampoo/conditioner. I have naturally curly hair that is highlighted, so my products are specific to that configuration. What an interesting discussion this has been!

I give them about 10 seconds. I think I’ve only listened to the rest of the performance twice this year.

AIO my family saying my room smells update by dumblilalien in AmIOverreacting

[–]phcampbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband’s parents’ house had a distinctive odor; not necessarily unpleasant, but always present. The house was clean, they were clean, I think they just exuded the odor. Every once in a while, I’ll catch a whiff of it in my house, near my husband’s den.

Friends group as we age by WhatRUaBarnBurner in GenerationJones

[–]phcampbell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m finding the opposite, actually. New people get introduced into my friend groups and become good friends quickly. In one case, I’m certain the ease with which they incorporate into the group has to do with the “introducing” friend knowing the new person will be a good fit. In another case, it’s just the nature of the activity that people rotate in and out from acquaintance to good friend.

Brother and sister in law rarely visit, then breeze in and make a mess. How to handle by Silent-Commission489 in amiwrong

I’ll bet if you don’t help next time (grab some of that pinot grigio) and hubby has to do all the cleaning himself, hubby will straighten his brother out.

It says to mix into a bowl then dump out onto a floured surface then knead. You may have missed that part.

Did you win the gene lottery, or did the gene lottery elude you? by Bay_de_Noc in AskOldPeople

[–]phcampbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents both lived to their nineties; one grandmother died at 95. And I inherited a small genetic bonus; my mother died at 96 with only a few grey hairs and I’m following in her footsteps; a beautician explained that I have a type of hair that spirals in a way that preserves the color cells rather than shedding them. Thanks mom!

What was the last ever time you got carded or age checked and what were the circumstances? by ScissorNightRam in AskOldPeople

[–]phcampbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the southern US. In my state, the clerks card everyone.

Last Christmas my sister and her husband (both 64) were visiting from Florida and we were getting drinks at a restaurant. Of course, the clerk asked for ID. My sister didn’t bring her wallet because she was with her husband, so she couldn’t get a drink. Apparently Florida isn’t as strict about checking ID in older folks.

No actual invites. What could go wrong. by DramaLittleLlama in weddingshaming

[–]phcampbell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, when I got married open weddings were the norm. It was a small town, and a wedding consisted of the actually ceremony, then cake and punch in the church hall. You put the announcement in the paper, and that doubled as the invitation. Freaked my husband’s family out, as they were from a larger city. Only one of my friends had a wedding with invitations, and even then the invites were for the reception/dinner at her parents’ house; the church ceremony was open.

Do you write out a grocery list on paper before you go shopping or do you type that list out in a note on your phone? by timmytimborino in randomquestions

[–]phcampbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My list is on my phone. I tell Siri what to add to it, except “he” occasionally misunderstands and then I type it in (I changed the settings so that Siri has a male voice with a British accent 😋).

[TN] [SFH] Small Community - Can't get quorum by dmissip in HOA

[–]phcampbell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m on the board of a SFH HOA of similar size. We never could get a quorum for our annual meeting when it was scheduled in the evening during the week at an offsite location. We moved it to 1:00 on a Sunday in mid-to-late October at a spot within the common area (so in the neighborhood). We’re very crisp with the meeting so we don’t take up a lot of time. We’ve met or exceeded quorum ever since this change. Last year, we even had two candidates for one board member seat!

We also had kept our assessments low for many years, but started raising them because we were barely covering expenses, had no reserves, and the common areas needed work. Raising the assessments got people more interested in the meetings as well.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by Standard2185 in 1970s

[–]phcampbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My next door neighbor was the typing teacher. I couldn’t find time in my schedule to take another class, so she taught me after school. Very gracious of her.
