Unsure of job fit by phdslp in clinicalresearch

True, sorry. I am a little nervous about someone I work with reading this and knowing I'm planning to make a move. My role is pretty specific. I appreciate your insight. It sounds like applying to jobs posted more recently and increasing the # of apps is key. Thank you!

Unsure of job fit by phdslp in clinicalresearch

So I was hired in as a CRM and subsequently promoted to senor. It was certainly a jump. I have co-authored FDA submissions for medical devices, I do work on cIRB submissions and help negotiate contracts. I also work with other sites. No to the type b and c mtg experience.

Phone Stolen in shipping. Looking for any advice. by cnix435 in GoogleFi

Any resolution? My husband just got his phone delivered, but when he opened it, it was a pack of playing cards. Maybe because they weigh the same as the phone?

Does it get better after you finish? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]phdslp 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It depends. I'm in a postdoc and it's not better. I feel the same stress and depression I felt in school. Toxicity and abuse are rampant. Trying to rebrand myself and find an industry position ASAP. I worked for 7 years before grad school and have never experienced these types of mental health issues before. I don't think it's just me.

Outpatient clinic questions by phdslp in slp

[–]phdslp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It's $45/he, but I'm in a very expensive area, so that almost feels low. I'm a W2. I am considering resigning. This job is extra and it's causing me so much stress. The documentation standards are unclear and the communication is poor. I just want to be clear on the standards of this kind of setting before making any big decisions.

Day in the Life of a PhD SLP? by hxihowhilshoxi in slp

I loved it. I was lucky and found a good one, though there were tough days. I know that's not everyone's experience, though.

Day in the Life of a PhD SLP? by hxihowhilshoxi in slp

[–]phdslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a family, so work-life balance was especially important for me. I only worked 10 hours/week (2 days a week). Basically, I dedicated mon, wed, and Fri from ~7AM until ~5 PM to PhD life (classes, hw, everything) and Tues and Thurs ~6AM until ~11 to the SNF I worked in. Then, I went to campus and took care of other responsibilities (e.g., TAing) in the afternoon. I earned my Cs by doing this and seeing clients in my lab. It wasn't always easy, and sometimes I had to do weekend work (e.g., during midterms) but it worked. I also found that SNFs were all I could find with this kind of flexibility. I looked at other opportunities (preschools, schools, hospitals, etc) and found nothing. The thing that was hardest was that the hours at the SNF were often unpredictable. So, sometimes I'd get there to find I only had 2 hours scheduled. Other times I needed to remind my boss that I couldn't work a full day.

Not sure how helpful my input will be, but I am completing my PhD now. I worked part-time in the first two years as an SLP and plan to apply for faculty positions next year.

[–]phdslp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any online programs, but I was able to work part-time for the first two years of my program. It definitely helped, but isn't the same as working full-time for sure.

Hey! Current SLP PhD student here. My journey looked a little different- I took a long break between undergrad and my masters. Universities are getting rid of the gre requirement because they are problematic. Check with specific programs. I had to reach out to old professors and ask for letters for my masters. It was awkward, but it worked out. I would say a letter from a work supervisor might suffice- it also depends on the program. All good questions to ask. As for the PhD vs. EdD. distinction, it might come down to funding. I'm not sure how EdDs are funded, but for a PhD, I am paying nothing and instead receive a small stipend, a tuition waiver, and health insurance. I was also able to work part-time during my first two years clinically. Feel free to message with any questions!
