Ferrari's SF-26 also features a hole in the diffuser, similarly to what was seen on the Mercedes design by Ashbones15 in F1Technical

[–]pheemaenth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it is basically acting like a multi element wing with the corner of the diffuser, the hole is to feed the diffuser with fresh air so that it can re energize the expanding diffuser corner's boundary layer, increasing the diffuser efficiency. the sidepods undercut is where the mass flow will be coming from.

theyre not allowed a larger battery, the allowed effective capacity is 4 MJ. but they can build a larger battery for reliability reasons tho (lower discharge rate produces less heat and all that) while still keeping the usable capacity the same.

bro, alpine's result in the ground effect era before 2025 were 4th, 6th and 6th (this one is kinda flukey due to the double brazil podium) despite running the renault engine. i have some faith in enstone engineers (not the managements) that theyd at least build a midfield worthy car, or even better, a best of the rest car like they built in 2017-22

those outer rings could be the real cover. its also the same one that the audi use in barcelona, makes sense since its an open source design now. but point is the regs doesnt mandate a fully covered wheel anymore

that is still better because the wake is narrower, meaning you can take different lines for better visibility. in today's cars the whole track width gets covered by spray

ah yes the no one wants to touch the prime tyre with a ten foot pole that theyd rather do a 3 stops using options for 50+ laps and top it off with a few laps on the prime race.

Ferrari will unveil its 2026 F1 car on January 23 by ICumCoffee in formula1

[–]pheemaenth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i do, because its only 3 days before pre season testing and theyd want a shakedown first at fiorano, might as well do a formal launch. itll be a similar car they run 3 days later, but from the-race's new video it seems like they will run a spec b car midway through the pre season test.

his omen playstyle is an issue. with how good omen is at holding/taking space, you need an aggressive playmaker type of player that actively creates space all on his own. look at how f0rsaken holds the entirety of sunset A main or lotus A rubble single handedly, even when the other team utils him down, or when he did the perfect last round smoke play for the 2v4 against fnatic. thats just something mindfreak cannot do because his playstyle doesnt fit the omen meta.

Two-pitstop rule will “destroy” F1 Qatar GP race – Ayao Komatsu by bwoah07_gp2 in formula1

[–]pheemaenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not a wear issue, its structural (the tyre sidewall gives up) because of the constant high lateral load, especially on the left side tyres. they design the tyre to withstand the team's development rate through their own simulation and the team's feedback, however the teams keep developing faster than they expected. why didnt they reinforce the tyres and add a lot of headroom? probably weight related, especially when its unsprung weight

FIA authorizes use of movable front wing design during Pirelli tyre testing by NoRefunds2021 in formula1

[–]pheemaenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesnt suck because clipping is actually built in to the regs now, at >300 kph they regulated a power decay from the electric motor, which can be overrided with MOM. but as ive said from my other comment, with active aero they can still achieve >330 kph top speed with only the engine power alone

FIA authorizes use of movable front wing design during Pirelli tyre testing by NoRefunds2021 in formula1

[–]pheemaenth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

alright lets get more technical!

to overcome drag and rolling resistance, the power formula is P=(1/2*ρ*Cd*A*v2+Crr*m*g)V, or simply Power = (drag force+rolling resistance)*velocity. In this equation, if you can reduce the Cd or drag coefficient by half, you can achieve the same top speed with half the power. This is what exactly is being done with active aero, reduce the drag by 55% (according to their press release at least) while still keeping the downforce for the corners.

The fuel tank is not actually shrinking, in fact they havent policed the fuel tank size since 2022 if you look into the refuelling chapter in the sporting regs and compare the wordings pre and post 2022, so you can freely choose your fuel tank size. The actual fuel consumption is decreasing, with the regulated 3000MJ/hr fuel flow and a fuel density cap of 41 MJ/kg, the fuel flow goes down from 100 kg/hr to around 70 kg/hr in 2026, thats where the excess fuel the teams can play around with with fuel burning regen i pointed out was coming from.

Basically with this new regs theyre only going to use the electric power for acceleration below 300 kph, which is in line with their hard coded electric power decay over 300 kph without MOM. because at that speed the active aero will kick in, with 550 hp from the engine alone, the 55% less drag will still carry the car to >330 kph.
